== What Do Doug's Powers Do, Anyway? ==
|History=Douglas Ramsey was part of the second generation of students to join Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, with a mutant power of pattern recognition which allowed him to instantly understand and communicate in any language, both written or spoken. Doug went on adventures with many of his fellow students, and was known for his precocious and adventurous spirit. In particular, Doug struck up a friendship with an alien being known as "Warlock" which was adopted and became something of a class mascot, as Warlock was a mutant himself, the only member of the alien Technarchy who had evolved to develop empathy and respect for organic life.

He was resurrected when an enemy of the X-Men used the techno-organic virus he was infected with to rebuild his dead body. His role in the plan was to bypass the security system of the X-Men's base and enable an army of zombified mutants to launch a surprise attack. But Doug's friends wouldn't let go of their friend so easily, and during the battle that ensued Doug was freed from enemy control and rejoined the X-Men. Afterward, he left to go on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to solve the challenges and difficulties he had faced in his rebirth.

|Personality=Doug was always a smarty, a bit of a nerd, good with computers and fond of science fiction and fantasy novels and role-playing games. But he was also possessed of a precocious, adventurous spirit, a love of his friends and a warm heart.
== A Linguistic History ==
<br><br>

Death has damaged Doug a bit. Even as the experience of his resurrection has expanded his powers, he is having to re-learn how to communicate, how to sift out the overwhelming barrage of language and find what matters, and find "His" language.
Douglas Ramsey is the son of Phillip and Sheila Ramsey, a pair of lawyers based out of Salem Center, NY.  An only child, Doug was doted on by his parents and grew up affluent with high-tech toys at his disposal. He developed an affinity for computers and a knack for coding and programming, in what was (unbeknownst to him) the earliest manifestations of his Mutant power.
<br><br>

But deep inside, despite the horror of his death and the agony of his return to life, he is moved more than ever by love; before he died, he sometimes wondered about his purpose in life, and what good his powers were.
Phillip Ramsey's services as a lawyer were kept on retainer by Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and eventually it became apparent to the school that Doug was a mutant himself; though for their own reasons Xavier and Magneto chose not to disclose this information to Doug or his parents. Instead, they quietly encouraged him to begin taking supplemental courses at the school and subtly encouraged his socializing with some of the younger students.
<br><br>

Now, he realizes his life is the endless quest for understanding... and that his friends and loved ones are what make life worth living.
Doug did not truly become part of the X-Family until the night a strange alien life-form crash-landed in Salem Center and proceeded to invade the school seeking a power source it could siphon to regenerate himself. The students were able to trap the alien in the Danger Room, at which point Doug was retrieved and informed of his Mutant abilities. Despite his initial disbelief, Doug was able to communicate with the alien, which revealed itself as a Technarch entity called "Warlock." Doug became part of the regular orbit of X-School students, and he and Warlock became inseparable friends.

<BR>
Over the course of his tenure as a student, Doug had numerous adventures, once deciphering an alien language in time to activate a device that stopped the Earth from being torn apart, and later on travelling to Asgard (which he remembers ambivalently) and Mojoworld (also fairly ambivalently).  He and his friends also had an encounter with the Impossible Man, which ended in their favor when Warlock demonstrated he could do something the Impossible Man could not -- change color.  During this time period, Doug engaged in frequent physical mergers with Warlock, and due to this he was unknowningly infected with the T/O virus Technarchs use to convert organic matter for energy harvesting.
Doug's mutant ability is sometimes erroneously classified as "Linguistic Comprehension" (and indeed, that's generally how he couches it, seeing the entire world as language to be deciphered) but what it really is a high-level ability to decipher patterns that may be psionic. What Doug's power does, is actually rapid mental decryption. His brain is a lightning calculator, instantly able to study patterns and extrapolate not only their meaning, but what comes next; he can read and craft complex computer coding like lightning and understand the language of birdsong with equal alacrity.

Doug's life came to a premature end when a group of Smile-Face anti-mutant paramilitaries launched an attack on a cell of Morlocks in New York City.  The X-Men intervened, and the New Mutants were tasked with escorting a group of Morlock children out of harm's way.  Unbeknownst to the X-Men, a group of Smile-Faces had stealthed and were waiting for the students in ambush.  During the course of the fight, Doug noticed that one of the Smile Faces had drawn a bead on one of his fellow New Mutants and was about to shoot them; Doug intervened and tackled the student out of the way, and was fatally shot. Magneto proceeded to arrive and crushed the offending Smile-Face in his own armor before rescuing the other students, but Doug bled out immediately.  His parents were informed he had been accidentally shot by a hunter in the woods near the school and Doug was buried quietly in a cemetery in Salem Center where it seemed he would fade into memory, and he would have, if not for the actions of a rogue scientist.
He can instantly decode and communicate in virtually any language both oral and written, and even languages that would be completely alien to him (such as extradimensional tongues) can be broken down and mastered in the span of a few hours.

Jorge Ramirez was an Umbrella Corporation virologist who was on the team that initially developed the G-Virus. He ultimately left Umbrella shortly before the Raccoon City incident due to a falling out with Umbrella's research heads over the purpose of their work; they sought to focus on biological weapons for potential military use; Ramirez felt that the real money was in developing longevity and resurrection treatments for sale to the super-wealthy and social elites.  Ramirez eventually came to the conclusion that Umbrella's research was hopelessly tainted.  Through unknown channels, he obtained knowledge of the Techno-Organic virus along with information about Doug, who he suspected may have developed a low-level T/O infection prior to his demise.  Styling himself as "The Reanimator," Ramirez was able to activate the Techno-Organic virus and direct it to rebuild Doug's body at the cellular level; having already infected him at a systemic level, the virus also restored his memories and personality.
With some observance and awareness he can even examine the movement patterns of large groups and determine not only the presence of a potential disturbance but also with some active effort track down the source of that disturbance before it happens.

<BR><BR>
The Reanimator helped dig Doug out of his grave, took a tissue and blood sample, and then observed Doug's behavior for a time, before leaving him to the mercy of the Juggernaut, who took pity on a confused and obviously sick mutant and left him at Xavier's school.
His ability to read body language has developed to such an acute degree that he knows what even trained combatants are going to do before they've decided to do it; his powers allow them to read their movements and give the ability to instantly decipher what they're going to do next.

COMBAT
"Your attack is useless. It is a dead language."

Doug Ramsey is not a trained combatant, aside from the basic self-defense courses he took before he died. He's not super-durable or super-strong or super-fast.

But his powers make him incredibly dangerous in a fight. He knows what people are going to do; he knows intuitively how he should react to it. He knows if the enemy is striking to disable or out to kill, if they're attacking out of fear or anger. Reading others, something people spend a lifetime trying to master, comes as easily to him as breathing at a level of skill they could never hope to match.

Simply put, Doug can read his enemy like a book... and skip ahead to the ending.

COMPUTER WHIZ
Doug is a world-class computer geek and hacker, both due to his experience and because of the fact that thanks to his powers computer code just unspools before him. No matter how complex it is, how detailed, it all reads to him as plain as day, and he understands how to put it together in order to achieve the desired result.

LANGUAGES
Yes. Yup. Mhmmm. Si. Ydw. Ja. Tha. Hai. Shi. That bit of fun aside, Doug is an intuitive and educated expert on languages, how they work, how they're put together, and why they evolve. As an interest, it just evolved naturally, dovetailing with his mutant power, and he is especially interested in languages from outside of the human sphere and dead languges -- even though they're not really a riddle to him, they're still fascinating.

SCHOLASTICS
Doug is an all-around mathlete, an intellectual, deeply well-read and great to have on your team on trivia night. |Resources=PARENTS
Doug's parents, Phillip and Sheila Ramsey, are still alive; they were informed that their son died in a "hunting accident." They were loving parents, and once they came to terms with the staggering implausibility of their son's resurrection, it's likely they would take him in again.

WARLOCK
Doug's best friend is the enigmatic aberrant Technarch known as Warlock. Their bond is incredibly close, but Warlock has moved on in the interim since Doug's death, to seek his own destiny. But their closeness is something that cannot be disputed; the two were happiest in one another's company, and it is a given, if Doug needed his buddy, Warlock would come to the rescue.

XAVIER'S SCHOOL
Doug was a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters; he's part of a family. He can go to them for shelter, he can go to them for help, and if at all within their power (which it most certainly is) they'll give him shelter and aid. |Weaknesses=DEAD MAN WALKING
Doug Ramsey died. He straight-up died, his parents buried him, his friends mourned, and then life moved on. He remembers being shot, he remembers dying, and he remembers waking up, breathing the stale death-laced air in his rotten coffin and then clawing his way through rotten wood and soggy grave earth, and then reeling under the sensory input of the world around him. The experience has left him deeply traumatized, and it may take him a very long time to come to terms with it.

TECHNORGANIC VIRUS
The truth of Doug's resurrection lies in the fact that his frequent intimate proximity to his friend Warlock led to Doug developing a slow-burning infection of the Technorganic virus the Technarchy uses to corrupt organic matter and incorporate it into their collective. If Doug hadn't been killed, the virus may well have destroyed him anyway. His death, however, and the fact that Warlock was himself an aberrant Technarch caused the virus to mutate; it was then used by an enemy of the X-Men to physically rebuild Doug's body and then control him.
