Scanning is the method by which Cybertronians can change their alternate modes to resemble things native to whatever planet they happen to be on. The "new" alternate mode scanned must be roughly similar in size, form, and function, to their existing mode. It can be difficult to find a compatible alternate mode. After scanning, the general colour scheme remains the same. Changing ones colour scheme requires specialised paint and a skilled medic.
