There's a dreary drizzle clouding the streets of Gotham tonight, dampening the approaching summer warmth into a wet, muggy haze. Several blocks away, to the east, an alarm has begun going off in one of West Chelsea's towering mall buildings and police sirens around the precinct are flicking on as the night patrols turn towards the automated crime alert.
But here in the narrow alleyway behind the Ming Diner, that world is far away and quiet, if the sounds even reach it at all. Buried too deep to bask in the light of the street lamps, a metal grate lifts up and scrapes against the pavement as its pushed aside, offering a new path for water to flood into the storm drain down below. A small crest of black canvas pokes out, followed by the rest of a hood as a dark silhouette emerges from underground. Shimmying herself up with a little effort, a diminutive black shadow of a ninja climbs up into the alley and scans her surroundings with two slitted orange cat-eyes.
