• National Defense: The Armed Forces of Atlantis maintain civil order; the Atlantean armoury includes various vessels with dual functions for service underwater and in aerial combat; many of the underwater models can be modified to appear as a marine creature. Defence of the capital is maintained by the Atlantean Royal Guard.

• International Relations: Atlantis utilises the United Nations for most diplomatic contact with the surface world. Atlantis has been at war with other underwater civilisation. Invasions and annexations of Tritonis, Skarka, Lemuria, Venturia, and Shayeris succeeded. Invasions of Thierna Na Oge and Deluvia failed. Kahndaq and Latveria have been occasional allies. The Fantastic Four and Justice League have usually been welcomed guests of Atlantis.

• History: Magma vents were released during a war that took place over eleven thousand years ago. The tectonic plates shifted and the flooding was so intense that it caused the entire continent of Atlantis to sink down to the ocean floor. Almost two thousand years later, a group of Homo mermani reclaimed the lost city of Poseidonis. These new Atlanteans managed to eke out a life for themselves, and in time, it grew into a powerful empire. When the Emperor had twin sons, they agreed to share the emperorship, and this became the norm until the dual emperorship of Tha-Korr and Orin I. Tha-Korr, the senior Emperor, moved the capital south for defensive purposes. Despite the danger, Orin chose to remain in Poseidonis, where he won many battles. In time, his realm evolved into the Kingdom of Atlantis that we know today.
