Profile

Bishop is a mutant displaced from his own time, having traveled back to the present in pursuit of nearly a hundred mutant criminals that escaped into the past from his future. Driven and hard, he is a ruthless and relentless peacekeeper, dedicated to protecting the people of this time from the escapees and to preventing them from altering the timeline to benefit themselves. With only his sister Shard as a holographic companion, he hunts across the globe, pledged to either return each criminal to their own time...or permanently preventing them from harming anyone else.

Description

This man is powerfully built, standing well over six and a half feet in height, with a wide barrel chest and extremely well defined musculature. His dark brown eyes are cool and penetrating when not hidden behind his ever present shades, set in a handsome broad face with a grim set, with a neatly trimmed goatee darkening his strong jaw in black stubble. His hair is bound back in dreadlocks, falling in a loose main over his shoulders and down his back, framing the dark skin of his face. Over the right side of his face is tattooed a stylized M that runs from his forehead to his jawline and over his right eye.

He wears a dark blue uniform, the sleeves short to bare his massive biceps and forearms down to where armored combat gloves cover his hands. His right arm is obviously a banded metal replacement, but mirrors the flesh of his left arm in appearance. The jacket is double breasted and held shut by hidden fasteners, with a golden stripe running down the left side over the waist and down the leg of his matching military style pants into the matching dark blue military style boots. A wide gold utility belt is belted over his pant, under which his top is tucked. Smaller golden pouches are attached to the small bandoliers that run over and under either shoulder to connect with a holster on either side, into which an advanced looking pistol is tucked securely, with a thin band connecting the holsters at the front across the chest and behind across the middle back. Either short sleeve has the same golden line running around the bottom of the sleeve. Around his neck is a loose crimson bandana, tied at the back of his neck. At the left shoulder and attached to the belt via a wide disk is a red circle with a black X across it, surrounded in a rim of gold.

History

Bishop grew up as an orphan with his sister Shard in the Mutant Containment Facility at Sheepshead, Brooklyn in the early 22nd century, in what had been the United States after the Sentinels had conquered all North America. They never knew their parents, but were found as very young children by a man named "Witness" Lebeau, so called because he had been witness to the death of the X-Men at the hands of the "X-Traitor" years before. Witness took care of the pair until he could find their surviving family, their grandmother, leaving them in her hands to raise, as they were moved from Brooklyn to another containment facility in Nevada. Both children were tattooed, as were all mutants, with an M over their right eye to mark them as mutants by their Sentinel jailers. He and his sister grew up hearing stories of the X-Men, who had become martyrs and near legendary heroes, and when their grandmother finally passed on, she made Bishop promise to protect his sister, and to live up to the ideals of the X-Men.

Shortly after then, the Summers Rebellion began, as humans and mutants allied to overthrow their Sentinel overlords, destroying them and freeing the mutants imprisoned in the various camps. In the chaotic aftermath, the two children were left alone, and forced to turn to petty crime and theft to survive in the post-rebellion reality. Luckily for them, a blind war veteran named Hancock found them, and out of compassion took them in to give them a home. As they grew, both Bishop and Shard came to idolize a group of anti-human mutants known as the Exhumes, who the teen, often angry at the world as it was, saw as heroic outlaws and champions for mutants.

This changed when a group of Exhumes kidnapped his sister, and murdered Hancock for daring to raise mutant children when he was only human. Bishop survived and attempted to rescue his sister, but was likewise captured and in danger of being murdered, before a group of Xavier Security Enforcers burst in, saving the two teens and taking the Exhumes into custody. The XSE were part of the post-war agreement with humanity, where mutants were allowed to police themselves instead of by a human police force. This inspired Bishop to want to be a peacekeeper just like them, and he soon after joined the XSE along with his sister. There, Bishop and Shard met another aspiring XSE cadet named Trevor Fitzroy, who became Bishop's friend and his sister Shard's lover, revealing to her that he was an illegitimate son of Sebastian Shaw, the Black King of the Hellfire Club. The three rose through the ranks, until tragedy struck when Fitzroy was killed during an operation and raised from the dead by another mutant...but lacking his morals; his "soul." Fitzroy quit the XSE, breaking off his relationship with Shard and forming his own group of criminal mutants he named the Hellions and joining his father's Hellfire Club.

Meanwhile, Bishop rapidly rose through the ranks to become the leader of the XSE Omega Squad, the roving troubleshooters assigned to the most difficult missions within the XSE's mandate to police mutants. His sister became the youngest field officer, replacing Fitzroy after his departure. Bishop eventually faced off against his former friend, and took him and the Hellions down, imprisoning him for his many crimes as a serial killer.

However, the XSE was increasingly forced by necessity to shift away from a strict adherence to the goals of Charles Xavier, which eventually caused a split, with a new organization, Xavier's Underground Enforcers, who were hardline supporters of Xavier who felt the XSE had become too oriented on creating order over the vision of Xavier for humanity and mutants alike. Shard, already feeling adrift after Fitzroy's turn against her and the XSE, chose to leave, joining the XUE as she believed they were doing better behind the scenes than the XSE was keeping order.

Bishop felt a sense of betrayal over his sister's departure, and threw himself even more into his work, but was relieved when his sister returned to the XSE, having learned that the XUE was planning on disrupting their future via time travel. Believing Fitzroy might be able to tell her more, Shard interrogated him, and followed his tip straight into an ambush by 'emplates', vampire mutants who drained and turned Shard and her team. Bishop, who was following Shard, was forced to fight and mortally wound his baby sister, who had been turned into a monster.

Desperate, Bishop took Shard to Witness Lebeau, who agreed to save Shard's mind by scanning her brainwaves into a holographic matrix projector, in return for Bishop serving him for a year. Bishop agreed, resigning from the XSE for a time, and keeping his sister, now a holographic life form, with him always. He was eventually reinstated as the commanding officer of the XSE Omega Squad, just in time to receive a report that Trevor Fitzroy had stated a prison break, by using his powers to jump through time to rip a hole into the past, taking with him 93 other mutant criminals imprisoned with him. Realizing the damage the mutant criminals could do in a past unprepared for them, Bishop ignored orders to return to base, instead going to the mutant Forge's laboratory and convincing him to replace one of his arms with a special battle ready prototype incorporating a time jump system, along with installing his sister's holographic matrix. Using the workshop's main nuclear generator and computer system, he was with Forge's help able to track when the escapees had arrived, and followed the escaped criminals back in time, determined to return them to the future to be safely imprisoned...or to ensure they would never harm anyone again, if necessary.

Personality

Bishop grew up in a harsh, chaotic environment following the Summers Rebellion, orphaned with his sister in a time where humans and mutants were struggling to rebuild. He was inspired by the peacekeepers of the XSE to become a peacekeeper himself, and to bring order to that chaos. As a result, he's a very disciplined and intelligent man, who works hard to hone his mind and body and powers to be the best he can be. He honestly believes in the idea of protecting the weak from those that would abuse them, and being a guardian of both humans and mutants alike. He took his responsibilities as a leader seriously in the XSE, and cared deeply about his people, even though he often covered it with a gruff, hard exterior. As an orphan, he had often had only his sister as family, and in a way, the XSE and their goals became his new family, encouraging to push himself hard in order to avoid letting them down. He believes in being the shield against the dark for those he is pledged to protect.

However, the "death" of his sister Shard has hardened him. He blames himself for Shard being reduced to a holographic infomorph, and has become grim and ruthless, even brutal in the pursuit of bringing order, often following an "ends justify the means" methodology. In particular, he can act like Ahab in pursuit of the White Whale, especially when it's personal (such as with Trevor Fitzroy). When it comes to making hard decisions, he feels he is the one best suited to make those judgement, and may stubbornly ignore the advice of others. This bloody single-mindedness can be an problem when he becomes so fixated on his goal that he starts to ignore other ways to reach it. This is especially true if he has no one around to call him on it or force him to consider alternatives. Despite seeming to require no one but himself to operate effectively, in truth Bishop works best with someone else besides just his sister to act as a check on his actions and to be willing to push him to consider other paths.

To him, the responsibility of being willing to do what's needed means he's the one who has to make the hard calls; he's the one who has to sometimes do bad things so that good people can sleep safely at night. While he's a fairly moral and ethical man, he puts the welfare of innocents first; to him, the good of the many outweighs the good of the few. He doesn't dither or hesitate when a decision must be made...he makes it based on his best judgement and moves on, adapting as needed if he makes a mistake, though he's sometimes reluctant to outright admit he's made an error.

While he can seem only grim and serious, there is a sense of humor, dry though it is, buried under that gruff exterior, and for those who can get past it, he can be a loyal friend. If anything, his tendency to push people away is due more to caring too much for his sister and others he's lost than it is an inability to make those connections. He fears losing any more people he cares about, so he resists developing those connections, though sometimes they happen despite his best efforts. He feels a strong connection to teammates in particular, and a loyalty and responsibility towards them ingrained into him after years of being an officer in the XSE...at least, as long as they don't show they have no interested in similar loyalty or responsibility towards him. He does have a fear of letting those who rely on him down; of coming up short when people were depending on him to help them or save them.

Finally, Bishop grew up on the stories of the X-Men, long dead in his time, but still considered heroes and symbols to the subjugated mutant population. He joined the XSE because he believed in Xavier's vision of mutants and humans living in harmony, and secretly harbors more than a little hero worship for the X-Men themselves. His disagreements with his sister and the XUE is primarily about the means of achieving that goal; for Bishop, it will always be about making order from chaos and a system that can protect its people, rather than more independent

Abilities

ENERGY ABSORPTION
Bishop has the Alpha-level mutant passive ability to absorb most types of energy, aimed either directly at him or surrounding him. Some energy types are more difficult for him to absorb than others, but it's rare for him to encounter energy he cannot at least partially absorb. Once he absorbs that energy, he can then transform in into nearly any other type of energy: heat, electricity, mystical, light, electromagnetic, psionic, plasma, etc. His most common trick is to convert and project that power through his body as projected concussive blasts, which he can tailor to different levels of power depending on his target. More importantly, he can enhance the energy he takes in, roughly doubling the power of an attack and re-emitting it, changing it in the process so it can even injure people who are normally immune to their own powers. This makes him extremely difficult to harm with energy attacks. The intensity of the energy he's exposed to determines the speed at which he charges up; a blast from Cyclops' eyebeam would give him a lot of energy all at once, but just letting something like sunlight recharge his abilities would take days to charge him to full power.

This ability to absorb energy extends to psionic powers, allowing him to shrug off raw telepathic or telekinetic blasts. However, this ability does not prevent his emotions or thoughts from being read by a telepath; it only means that it requires more effort to do and that he will be draining energy from the contact while it is going on.

There are two major drawbacks to his powers. The first is his difficulty with absorbing direct kinetic impacts to his body. He has no problems absorbing concussive kinetic impacts, such as from an explosion or a telekinetic impact. For direct impacts, however, such as from bullets or impacts from him being thrown into another object, he cannot efficiently absorb the energy completely, meaning he can be wounded by physical attacks, though his invulnerability can make up for this weakness when he's charged up.

The other weakness is that since his power is passive, Bishop is always absorbing energy, and has a maximum amount of energy he can absorb before he has to expel it or risk injury or death. When expelling energy in this way, it's often an uncontrolled, instinctive release, turning him into the center of a very large explosion that radiates out from him. While Bishop himself is not injured by this expulsion of energy, the same cannot be said for any people, buildings, or objects around him. Luckily, Bishop can contain a massive amount of power when fully charged.

ENERGY BATTERY
Once Bishop takes in energy, from whatever source, he can store it in his body like a battery and use it to empower his physical body. He can uses this to give himself superhuman strength (up to 6 tons), superhuman speed and reaction time, or to make himself nearly invulnerable when fully charged, able to shrug off hits that would destroy a tank. He can also use it to sustain his body, giving himself superhuman stamina, and a reduced need to breath, sleep, eat, water, or for body evacuations. He can even use that energy to propel himself into flight, though the length of time he can do so is dependent on how much energy he's been able to absorb. The more energy he has, the more he has to enhance his physical abilities, making him an increasingly dangerous opponent the longer a fight goes on. Alternately, he can drain power from his cybernetic arm's nuclear power system, though he prefers to do this only as a last resort. However, these abilities only work when he has power to spare; if he has expended his stored energy, he becomes much more vulnerable until he can recharge himself, especially to physical attacks.

PERFECT LOCATION
Whether it's a side effect of the chronal energies absorbed on his trip back to the present, a minor mutation, or simply the product of years of intense training and experience, Bishop has the ability to accurately determine his exact location and the current time no matter where he is, even when asleep.

TIME SLIP
Bishop's cybernetic arm incorporates a miniature time jump generator. While he can no longer use this to travel through time following his arrival in the present, which shorted out most of its systems, he can use it to effectively teleport on a global scale via a "time slip." Because of the large energy requirements needed for even a short range jump, Bishop prefers to use this ony when needed, such as for an intrusion past existing defenses, or for a quick escape to safety when overwhelmed.

WILLPOWER
Bishop possesses a highly disciplined mind, honed by years of pushing himself to his limits and pushing through any pain or difficulties in his path. He's not easily tricked or swayed, and can push himself beyond the average person's limits if needed.

Skills

ATHLETIC
Bishop is a highly athletic man, having trained his body through exercise and discipline to reach his peak performance. He is a very powerfully built man who can lift roughly twice his body weight, 550 pounds, even without his energy absorption abilities adding to his strength. He otherwise has the normal physical abilities of a man his age, height, and build who engages in intensive regular exercise and weight training.

FUTURE IMPERFECT
Due to arriving from the future, Bishop has a good working knowledge of major events in the past, though sometimes that knowledge has holes or is flawed due to imperfect record keeping and mythology trumping facts. Generally, this information isn't precise enough to give him truly hidden information for this time period, such as secret identities or covert plans or hidden bases. The exception is the X-Men, but even then, much of his knowledge came from Witness Lebeau in the future, who is at best an unreliable narrator and at worst attempting to hide things about his own past.

INTERROGATION
Bishop is an experienced police interrogator, with knowledge of how to draw out information from recalcitrant prisoners or how to smell a lie when someone is trying to deceive him. His drawback is that he tends to be the "bad cop" in such situations, relying on intimidation and threat to find the truth, rather than more comforting methods. The exception for this is when he's confronted with a child, as he noticeably softens the harshness of his questioning when faced with a minor, especially one he believes to be innocent and/or a victim.

MARKSMANSHIP
Bishop is a superb marksman with a wide variety of small arms and heavy weapons, and is sniper-certified with both the advanced weapons from his own time and with conventional weapons from the present. He is also skilled with heavy military-grade weapons.

PEACEKEEPER
Bishop is a trained police officer and detective, specializing in Homicide. As such, he is a experienced investigator, capable of making use of clues like forensic evidence or information from interrogations to find the truth of a situation and track down those responsible for it. He is trained in SWAT tactics designed to take down powered criminals fast and hard, before they can cause more harm, and has experience with hostage negotiation and combat infiltration.

UNARMED COMBAT
Bishop has had years of unarmed combat training and experience, making him an extremely dangerous combatant in either hand-to-hand or melee combat. He has no particular style, though his training focuses on immobilizing or disabling an opponent as quickly as possible, using lethal or non-lethal attacks.

VEHICLES
Bishop is an experienced driver and pilot, having taken a variety of pursuit, evasive, and tactical driving courses. He is trained in using evasive manuvers to avoid pursuit or being tailed, or to follow someone himself without being noticed. He is an average pilot, capable of flying most common commercial and military vehicles, as well as more advanced high-tech aircraft.

WEAPONRY
Bishop is very knowledgeable about a wide variety of weapons, from present day conventional firearms, to heavy military ordinance, to advanced futuretech energy weapons. He knows how to care for and maintain these weapons, as well as how to use them, and is an experienced demolitionist when it comes to heavy ordinance and explosives.

X-MEN KNOWLEDGE
In Bishop's future, the X-Men were fallen heros and martyrs from the past, symbols for a subjugated mutant population. He grew up on stories of their adventures, and strove to dedicate himself to Charles Xavier's ideals as a member of the XSE. He knows quite a bit about Xavier's School for the Gifted, its teachers and students, and those who wore the X, though some of the truths have been obscured by mythology.

ARMORY
Bishop arrived in the present armed with several pieces of advanced energy weaponry and equipment from his future, which he is able to recharge using his abilities to absorb and emit energy. Since he has no way to acquire more future weaponry, he has since augmented his armory with a variety of weapons from the present time period, ranging from conventional small arms, to military-grade weapons and high explosives, to sniper rifles and advanced high-tech energy weapons. This includes a variety of body armor and utility items. His future equipment consists of a pair of plasma pistols, a heavy plasma rifle, advanced armor built into his XSE uniform, and a pair of shades that act as both a HUD and AR display for visual information transmitted from his sister Shard. The most important devices he possesses (at least for his current mission) are small discs called time destabilizers, which have been tuned to be able to send anyone who has been affected by Trevor Fitzroy's time travel abilities back to their proper time. He also possesses a backup copy of Shard's brainwaves, in case her current matrix should ever be damaged.

CYBERNETIC ARM
Bishop's right arm has been replaced with a battle ready cybernetic limb, which is composed of advanced composite materials and was stolen from a future version of Forge's workshop. The arm is powered by an effectively inexhaustible nuclear power cell, and incorporates four clawed tendrils that he can extend, either as weapon spurs along his fist and forearm, or to ensnare or strangle an opponent. The arm is supernaturally strong, but only in terms of its grip and use as a battering weapon; since it's only his arm he lacks the leverage to fully utilize that strength, unless he also is pumping his physical strength via stored energy. His sister Shard's holographic matrix is also incorporated into the arm in an armored casing, along with a holographic projector allowing her to appear visually. Bishop or Shard can also use the arm's cybernetic systems to manipulate technology directly or remotely via a limited cyberkinesis, allowing him to bypass most conventional computer systems or even more advanced ones. The arm is built around a (currently non-functional) time jump system that allowed Bishop to travel to the past. Because of the damage caused by his initial time jump to the present, Bishop only uses it the present for short "time slips" that allow him to effectively teleport on a global scale, though it still requires large amounts of power to use in this fashion and draws on his personal power reserves rather than the arm's power cell, limiting its use.

SHARD
An engram of the brainwaves of Bishop's younger sister Shard currently exists as a holographic matrix-based infomorph installed in his cybernetic arm. Despite her lack of a body, this copy of Shard is an effective partner for Bishop, capable of using the arm's systems to remotely control and monitor technology around him through a limited cyberkinesis, as long as there is some method of interfacing with said technology. She can also appear either in Bishop's high-tech shades, or visually using the holo-emitter on his arm. Primarily, she acts as Bishop's operator, monitoring communications and systems around him and freeing up his attention to concentrate on other matters. Her other primary function is consulting a constantly shifting future 'history' that is incorporated into a quantum processor linked to their possibly future, allowing her to offer suggestions on how different events may reshape the future for good or ill. Despite being a copy, Shard displays her own individual personality based on the original, though her current circumstances have changed a lot of her views from the original. Bishop possesses a backup copy of Shard's brainwave patterns, just in case her current holographic matrix in his cybernetic arm is damaged, though the matrix in question is heavily armored to prevent just such an accident.

Weaknesses

KINETIC VULNERABILITY
Bishop can effortlessly absorb radiant energy and even concussive kinetic blasts, but cannot efficiently process kinetic energy as he can most other types. Heavy physical impacts or projectiles can injure him because of this, though he can lessen the severity of a hit, or (if he has a lot of stored energy) give himself a level of invulnerability to also defend against such attacks. Without that extra boost from that stored energy, he's much more vulnerable to kinetic hits than energy blasts.

M FOR MUTANT
Bishop bears a large M tattooed permanently over the right side of his face, which was used to mark him as a mutant in the Sentinel Mutant Containment Facility he grew up in in the future. This distinctive tattoo makes him easier to identify and be remembered.

OUT OF TIME
Bishop is a man outside of his proper time, and has a often flawed idea of what the present is like, based on fragmentary records and memories in his future. This becomes an issue when he attempts to use his knowledge of the present to try and influence his future, or to counter the effects of the time-displaced mutant criminals he hunts. He also lacks the support structure or team support he had in the future, and is forced to operate solo or with temporary allies at best.

PASSIVELY EXPLOSIVE
Bishop is always passively absorbing energy. He can't turn off this ability, nor can he increase or decrease the amount he absorbs. Even low level radiant energy, such as sunlight, will be absorbed, though more intense sources such as Cyclops' eyebeam or a lightning bolt will give him correspondingly more energy. He also has a maximum amount of energy he can absorb before he has to expel it or risk injury or death. When expelling energy in this way, it's often an uncontrolled, instinctive release, turning him into the center of a very large explosion that radiates out from him. While Bishop himself is not injured by this expulsion of energy, the same cannot be said for any people, buildings, or objects around him. Luckily, Bishop can contain a massive amount of power when fully charged, and (if he's prepared) choose what type of energy the explosion manifests as. This means Bishop often discharges some of his energy reserves when he feels he's carrying too much power, to ensure he has room to spare.

SINGLE-MINDED
Bishop has a tendency to become too focused on his goals at times, to the point where he ignores alternate possibilities and alternate methods. This can make him bull in to a situation with violence that could be solved through more peaceful solutions.

TREVOR FITZROY
Once a good friend, now a dangerous sociopath and serial killer, Trevor Fitzroy was responsible not only for his sister Shard's physical death, but for the prison break that allowed him and 93 other mutant criminals to escape into the present from Bishop's future. The two hate each other, and Bishop's obsession with hunting him down can affect his judgement. Fitzroy, for his part, knows that killing Bishop means no one can send him back to that future, meaning he'll be free to manipulate events to create a future where he is in charge, and making him just as dedicated to killing the XSE peacekeeper.
