Profile

The figure known as Grease Monkey ("GM" to their friends) appeared at Fix-It All-Tow - a small mechanic shop in Kings - only so long ago. Impressing the staff with their skill and offering a sob story about being thrown out of their home, they quickly wormed their way in to a position in return for a place to stay at night. But in reality, Grease Monkey is none other than Gyu-hui Mae - the missing child of a murdered neuroengineer. On a quest to find the truth of their father's death, GM masquerades as a mutant while digging deep in to what they believe is a conspiracy. With a genius-level intellect, they're certain they can get to the bottom of things - but it's a shame their maturity isn't nearly as advanced, and that their experience is somewhat...lacking.

Description:

The figure is short; somewhere around 5'3" or 5"4. But they have a big attitude, even just going off their posture. More often than not crouched or slouched, they seem mostly human...if not for a few particular characteristics. First of which are a pair of almost comically large ears on either side of their head, furred and occasionally twitching. Other than that, the upper body is mostly normal; a brown-eyed young face with east asian features, more often than not smeared with grease or smudge. Shaggy black hair frames it, held out of the face itself by a pair of goggles.

The figure - for it's hard to tell if they're male or female, they're rather androgynous in build - sports what looks like what was originally a mechanic's jumpsuit. Dark blue, its sleeves are rolled up to reveal metallic bracers, though at least the hands seem human enough - if covered by fingerless gloves. A furred tail sprouts from their back, just under a toolbelt with plenty of pockets and pouches. The pants are baggy, pocketed on the thighs, and tuck in to boots which...have no bottoms. Instead, odd-looking feet sprout from the bottom, looking not dissimilar from another set of hands.

History

History1:

Gyu-hui Mae is the only child of Ye-joon and Zilla Mae. Their father was a pioneer in the field of cybernetics & neurosciences, paving the way for advances with artificial limbs to be more natural and more responsive to their owners. It got to the point where he was one of the leading scientists of the company that manufactured and R&D'd the patented technology - though it wasn't a big company by any means, it was still a strong one. He met Zilla while at a science convention while he was still young (20s), and after about two years they married and then had their child.

Growing up, Gyu-hui drew closer than their father than their mother - even if they saw their mother a lot more. But with their father...Gyu-hui was a child prodigy, and immediately latched on to the technology that their father worked on. Ironically, it was playing with some of this tech during a visit to their labs that they suffered a terrible accident, resulting in heavy spine damage that denied them the use of their legs. But it could happen to no less fortunate person; they and their father both worked on the device that would allow them to use their legs once more, a spinal brace that would allow them to walk again. Gyu-hui themselves played with it a bit more, often hiding in her room as Ye-joon and Zilla got in to more and more fights...

Other than that, though, life was pretty good. At the age of fifteen they were already taking graduate classes, and continually playing with machines on the side. They dreamed of getting their own motorcycle when they were old enough, and tinkered with them (and the family car) when they weren't being allowed in Dad's lab to play with what was in there. In it, they designed a support structure for their legs; they noticed that even with the device on they could grow tired, and sought to give themselves greater strength, and to do /more/. It worked, at least- though the extra effects they kept secret, wanting to show their father at some point. They also planned on showing their father the fact that through the device's connection with their spine and his own prototypes, they could give themselves an extra limb - though they hadn't quite gotten the fine details down such as delicate fingers, they managed to get certain motions to the point where they could have a tail.

Stashing the new appendage away with a number of other items, they went to surprise their father at home with all that they'd done (including a few pieces of material that they hadn't seen before and wanted to ask him about)...only to find the house dead silent. They tentatively moved up to their parents' room to discover their mother arguing with their father once again, only this time there was a gun in her hand, and there was a shot-

At that point GM turned and bolted, unable (and partly unwilling) to make out everything else. They grabbed a few things and ran, numb with what they'd seen until they came across a small community of homeless. Said community was more than welcome to have them 'donate' some cash if they could stay with them for a while. (Read: "Here's my ATM card. This is my pin. Can I hang out here for a bit?") Through their radio they learned of the murder of Ye-joon Mae, the near death of his wife, Zilla (who was in the hospital in critical condition, after shooting an armed intruder), and their missing child, Gyu-hui.

Confused and not sure what to think (other than it couldn't have been Mom, Mom and Dad didn't get along but it wouldn't have been like that, it couldn't be), Gyu-hui had one more withdrawal made (read; everything they could) before giving the community almost everything but the clothes on their back and the briefcase they'd taken from their dad's lab. They tinkered while with them, eventually building a sort of identity-disguise through the help of their new friends helping to scrounge materials. The result was dirty, ragged, and included an 'attempt' at hiding the oversized ears (of a headpiece) and the hiding of a tail by wrapping it around their waist like a furry belt. Or just letting it lay loose. In essence, a scrungy mutant trying to pass itself off as human - not the other way around. (Because who'd want to be a mutant?)

Still, those funds couldn't last them forever - especially as they had only been able to make that second withdrawal at so much, and that was risking being found (especially after police were sniffing around the area). The day after their sixteenth birthday GM parted with the group, a vague idea having formed in their mind. Running (so to speak) around with them, they'd happened around an auto shop that was in some trouble, and at least somewhat receptive towards the idea of (super/sub/in)humans; they tinkered around with their stuff overnight, and when the owner came in and found someone elbow-deep in a machine that'd been broken for days and that someone cheerfully announced they not only fixed it for you but it should run twice as well, and then proceeded to demonstrate- well, that owner was willing to hear out the sob story GM had come up with. Something about suddenly having these new mutations, their parents kicking them out, skipping town to town and winding up here...

Maybe he wasn't outright sold, but he was willing to let them crash in the shop at night, especially after seeing their work and being assured of further assistance. At their request to stay out of sight for the most part, with most people being rather uncertain of certain elements of thheir appearance...he said he'd do what he could.

GM, to say the least, proved their worth, rapidly getting on the owner & crew's good sides. As for what they did when they weren't in the shop...well, suffice it to say they turned a spot in to a work station, where they could keep playing around with tools and tinker and, occasionally, go out and test them. This began to lean towards offensive and defensive gadgetry, which in turn led them in to needing to get in to situations where they'd be brought out- and GM wasn't too much in a mood to cause outright trouble. So, instead...they took advantage of the ones who did. Trying to get to the scene of incidents not necessarily to be a vigilante, but to see what could be scavenged - even if it was just knowledge from observing those who were more 'professional' than them. Surely anything would help, especially with their ear to the ground on trying to understand just what happened that night...

Personality

Personality:

COCKY
If everything seemed to come easily to you, you'd be a little confident in your own abilities, too. GM has rarely had anything be 'difficult' for them, and as such, has a rather high opinion of themselves and what they are capable of. Sure, they may not be able to get everything immediately, but given time and tools? Nothing is impossible. Even getting out of a bad situation. Clearly, they can see all the problems, and they've even got tech that helps them land on their feet!

CURIOUS
How does this work? What about that? GM wants to know as much as they can, about everything they can. Maybe they're not super interested in the history of rap, for example, but they'll at least give things a cursory look before moving on given the opportunity. And with things that catch their interest? They're practically obsessive, examining it from as many angles as possible and trying to digest each and every part of it. Proverbially speaking.

DRIVEN
When GM sets their mind to something, it's difficult to steer them away. No matter the difficulty, no matter the obstacles - none of those matter. GM doesn't think, they *know* they can accomplish anything, and because of that, they don't tend to become overly frustrated when something immediately doesn't go their way. It just means a different approach is needed - and they're generally willing to do whatever approach is needed.

JOVIAL
It's hard to keep a good monkey down. Or at least, this particular one. GM is a rather positive creature, sometimes sarcastic and sassy but ultimately good-humored and not about to mock someone for the hell of it. They'd rather laugh with someone than directly at them - though they're not above taunts and teases to get a reaction. It's all in good fun, however - for the most part.

SPUNKY
Attitude - it's a thing. And GM has quite a bit of it. They're willing to go right in to the fray with only so much preparation, trusting in their own abilities (and luck, and intelligence, and...well, everything else about them) to get out of trouble. And if they are in trouble? Pfft, nothing that they won't get over. There's very few things that can keep GM down for long.

WHIMSICAL
Some people just wanna have fun. For all of GM's obsession with their father's death, it hasn't dampened their need for fun. And with so many things coming easy, they tend to move on from subject to subject in a somewhat aimless and/or random manner. Almost selfish in their need to indulge their immediate needs, while it can be hard to predict what GM's focusing on at any given time (though something engineering-related is a good bet), you can almost be sure it's something that makes them or someone else smile.

Abilities

Child Prodigy:

It was discovered that Gyu-hui was a prodigy early on in their life, specifically when it came to building and engineering. While not on the level of such figures as Tony Stark and the like...given time, further education, and a few other factors they could certainly follow in their footsteps. As it is, GM has a knack for understanding how things work given a bit of time to study, to the effect of being able to replicate something along the lines (see Skills: Engineering) with only so much trouble.
They are not perfect, mind; they can make mistakes. They can misunderstand a concept. Sometimes sometimes a puzzle piece is missing. But GM has a hunger to understand, and what's more, a drive to improve on what's already there.

Skills

Engineering:
GM's passion. Their one true love. They're never more content than when they're working with their hands building things, whether it be a Lego set or a car engine or trying to improve on the night-vision goggles they picked up from that one guy who goes by 'Shopkeep'. GM personally adapted their father's technology to create their Monkey Suit (see Resources: Monkey Suit) and tends to be able to reverse-engineer almost anything so long as it follows standard scientific (read: not magic) principles.
They're far better at the physical design rather than the program, mind; GM can set up the basics of an interface, but cannot hack, and the more complicated the program the more likely there's a few problematic bugs. Give them free access to a junkyard, however, and they could slap together a working vehicle. (It may or may not be able to fly. It's more than likely a simian reference.)

Jury-Rigging:
While, given time and materials (and resources, and other such...) GM could likely live up to their claim of being able to build 'anything'...they have a knack for creating things 'on the fly'. A veritable MacGyver, while it goes without saying that some tech is out of their grasp, they can jury-rig most common Earth tech in to doing what they want it to do - if only temporarily, and obviously within reason. A calculator cannot suddenly be turned in to a phone - but a wrecked car can possibly be made to run a final mile or two, or, even better, blow up.

...'better' is obviously subject to opinion.

In general, parts can be salvaged in to impromptu weapons or tools, and things that are damaged can be made to limp along a little longer.

Parkour:

Gyu-hui enjoyed being active even at a young age; after their accident and the obtaining of their spinal brace, they chose parkour as a way to both stay active and to relish in their regained freedom of movement. Over the years, GM has only improved their skills; while they're not quite on the level of a professional traceur, they're certainly above average for those their age, and what's more is they honestly enjoy it. There's nothing like vaulting over obstacles in terms of exhileration - unless, of course, you're trying out a new gadget. But you could always combine the two...

Resources

Fix-It All-Tow:
A small mechanic's shop in Kings, and where GM calls their 'home'. While there's only enough room in the bay for a few cars and thus only so much need for staff, GM arrived at just the right time to where their general-engineering skills impressed the staff enough to 'hire' them - albeit under the table. Generally GM maintains the tools and equipment as opposed to working directly on the cars (easier for payroll purposes if the hours aren't needed to be logged), though they also offer advisement and, well, commentary. They've set up a cot in a loft storage area, as well as a tiny workshop. Sometimes it's good to be small.

Monkey Suit:
The 'Monkey Suit' is the primary set of equipment that GM wears at any given time. While they may make minor tweaks and occasionally create an extra tool for a job, in general, this is what one can expect:

Tail
The 'tail' that GM possesses is based on a prototype meant to fully replace limbs. Securely connected to the spinal brace, it is capable of supporting their weight thrice over (approximately 375lbs, or 171kg) just by its own grip - assuming it's secured around something. Mind, it's not necessarily comfortable holding that much weight - no more than someone hanging by an arm, for example - but it can do so. In addition, it's fully prehensile, and often responds to GM's emotions more like a cat than a monkey.

Leggings
The leggings are more of a light exoskeleton that are worn (and hidden) under baggy pants. These allow GM to make standing jumps of up to ten feet forwards and five feet high, more when running. In addition, it allows them to land these jumps (or falls) without losing their balance or otherwise hurting themselves. In general, GM can also use these to bounce up walls that are within five feet of each other.

Feet
GM also wears a pair of boots that not only increase their height an inch or two...but also serve as anchors for custom 'feet', styled after, well, a monkey's. In other words? They're fully capable of grasping like a pair of hands, courtesy of a connection fed up through the leggings. Mind, while GM is flexible they're not flexible enough to fully use them as hands, but...they help in the disguise, if nothing else.

Fuzzset
A headpiece that primarily consists of a pair of oversized and furred 'ears', though somewhat more cartoonish than one might expect from an actual simian. These do not actually have a connection to the spinal brace; the tech within is more condensed, mostly meant as an aid in disguise and subtle enhancements in sound (ears) and sight (goggles). We're not talking the kind of thing that'll pick up the drop of a pin, but it can give GM a slight edge unless they deliberately tweak it.

Spinal Brace:

The brace GM wears is an advanced prototype, further customized by their own hand. It's essentially a light harness that presses against the bare skin of their spine, allowing a neural bypass across damaged nerves that would otherwise paralyze them. While it's advanced enough to run off their body's own electricity without need of a battery, as well as compact enough to pass anything but up-close examination, it's still a necessary tool for them to function as they're used to.

Weaknesses

Damaged Spine:
Without the spinal brace they wear under their clothing, Gyu-hui is paralyzed from the waist down. They can't even feel sensation.

Electricity:
One of the problems of the spinal brace is that it taps in to GM's nerves...and has a problem with insulation, no matter how much GM's worked on it. As such, an excess of electricity is extremely debilitating, being conducted straight in to their body. A static shock is more than annoyance, it's a literal pain in the back - and that which may just give someone a slight burn can outright cripple GM with agony.
In addition, the majority of their tech is powered by battery systems; as such, not only are occasional recharges necessary, but EMPs can knock out the greater majority of the gear.

Immature:
Their intellect may be advanced, but Gyu-hui is still a teenager who needs to, well. Grow up. They haven't the breadth of experience as many adults have in order to manage their emotions or see things in perspective. When GM feels things, they tend to feel them Strongly and Intensely; it's not necessarily anything out of the ordinary, just a sign of their inexperience.

In Hiding:
Gyu-hui Mae is said to have gone missing. Kidnapped or dead, their mother insisted at the interview, tears streaming down her face. Grease Monkey is willing to do almost anything they can to keep themselves from being tied to that name, including masquerading as a mutant with an obvious, unhideable mutation. (We won't talk about the potential offense that can cause to actual mutants.) And while they've managed to weedle a place to stay and a somewhat steady source of income, the income is far from the allowance they once had - and their resources are far from the sort where they can truly build 'anything'. GM is learning to make do with less, but is always watching over their shoulder in paranoia - whether or not it's truly justified.

Missing Details:

This is what Gyu-hui saw; their mother holding a gun pointed at their father. This is what Gyu-hui knows; there was a shot, and their father fell back with a bloody wound. More than that, they didn't stick around to discover; panic took over, they packed a bag, and they ran. Whether or not trauma has clouded their memory of that moment is anyone's guess, but the fact is that they don't have all the details of what happened, they don't know the reasons, they don't know so much it terrifies them. And while they're convinced there's Something to this, it's very possible that...well, there's not. Who knows.

...no, really, who knows. Because GM will stop at nothing to find out.
