Profile

Mac Hudson was a leading petrochemical engineer and scientist for a division of the Roxxon Energy Corporation, where he met Heather McNeil (Vindicator), his future wife, and developed the Groundhog exploration suit. Discovering Zor-Don's crashed space ship underneath Mount Wrottesley in Angel Grove, he reverse engineered the alien Kree technology, leading to innovations that would give rise to the Guardian battle suit, Alpha Flight, and the Canadian Space Agency.

Description

James 'Mac' Hudson, stands at a solidly built 6'1", with classic square jawed good looks, dark hair and blue eyes. Sort of a 'Superman' thing if you will. His clothing? That tends towards smart-casual, slacks, a button down, but finished off with hiking boots or similar comfortable and functional footwear. Though when he's not out being the face of the CSA, he tends to be a jeans and sweatshirt sort of guy, going through succession of UBC "Thunderbirds" hoodies and UBC Engineering ball caps in his off-duty mechanical misadventures.

He's not much for jewelry, but he does wear some, his watch (and portable computer/comm device), his wedding ring, and his iron, engineer's ring. The latter two, he's almost never without.

On-duty as Guardian, he wears the Guardian Battle-Suit, a form-fitting suit of alien metal, in white and red which features a stylized maple leaf that wraps around the left side and onto his back. The suit covers his face except for his mouth and his clean shaven squared jaw. His eyes are expressionless behind white lenses but his lips are often smiling.

History

James "Mac" Hudson was born in London, Ontario the son of Franklin Hudson and was raised by his mother when his father died in a bar fight at age 30. Unbeknownst to James, or Mac, as he preferred to be called, his father had two other children out of wedlock. None of which have surfaced yet. As for Mac, he was a top student through high school, graduating early and earning a full-ride scholarship to the University of British Columbia's engineering program.

After earning degrees in mechanical and petrochemical engineering Mac got work as an engineer for Roxxon, lured by the paycheck and the promise of funding for his thesis project: the Groundhog armour. However, his time at Roxxon did not work out for the best despite meeting Heather McNeil, the woman he'd one day marry. The Groundhog armour was a success, but Roxxon wanted to weaponize it and sell it to the highest bidder, in this case, Hydra. With Heather's help, Mac stole the helmet and brought it to the Canadian government, stopping the sale and getting he and Heather the chance to work for the government in Department H. During their time there they would meet many of the heroes that would come to form Alpha Flight as well as other noteables such as Wolverine and the Hulk.

Mac and Heather married during their time at Department H and shortly afterwards the pair discovered Zor-Don's crashed Kree ship and Mac was able to unlock its secrets. Using a combination of alien and human technology Mac and Heather built the Guardian and Vindicator suits and begun working as superheroes for the Canadian government. The tech advances didn't stop there, and with Macs know-how a number of Kree technologies were used to allow the Canadian Space Agency to leap over NASA and a number of other Earth based space agencies to become the premier space exploration organization on the planet. Key to this was the development of Mackenzie King station in Earth orbit, and the development of the Arrow ships, interplanetary spaceships capable of exploring the solar system.

On the back of these successes and with the help of Heather's family connections, Mac and Heather were given the resources to form Alpha Flight, Canada's own superhero team working in concert with the Canadian Space Agency to explore space and defend Canada and the world at large.

Personality

Imagine if you will that Captain America and Reed Richards had a baby; that baby would be Mac. Not that I'm saying that Mac is the impossible love child of Cap and Mr. Fantastic, but his personality bears some similarity to both of theirs.

Like Reed Richards, Mac is a man of science, happiest when he's tinkering with some mechanical marvel or off exploring some new world, but like Captain Rogers, he's a man of patriotism and duty, willing to serve his country and the ideals it stands for, with his own blood and body if necessary. These traits come together in Mac's belief that his abilities and discoveries should serve his country and mankind rather than being a vehicle to self-aggrandizement and profit.

On a personal level, Mac is what you might call, a stand-up guy, honest, good-natured, if perhaps a little lost in his head. Bring up science or his latest project, or Alpha Flight, he'll talk your ear off, on other subjects, with people he doesn't know that well, he can be a bit quiet and reserved. Though with good-friends or with Heather he comes alive, with a wry sort of humour and lets his good heart show through.

Abilities

MECHANICAL GENIUS
A certified genius Mac is one of the worlds top mechanical minds, although, falling short of bigger names like Tony Stark and Macs idol, Reed Richards. He is able to grasp complex mechanical concepts and the workings of new technologies both quickly and easily.

THE GUARDIAN BATTLE-SUIT
While wearing the Guardian Battle-Suit Mac has the following abilities:

Supersonic Flight - The Guardian Suit is able to reach Mach 3 for sustained flight, and Mach 5 (escape velocity) for short bursts.

Enhanced Toughness - The suit acts like an ultra hard, but flexible second skin. It can repel small arms fire, grenades, and rockets. However, the latter two will knock the wearer off their feet on impact.

Environmental Force Field - The field emitted by the suit allows it to operate in the upper atmosphere; the cold of the Arctic; the depths of the sea; and the vacuum of space without harm to the user. It also offers some protection from heat and cold attacks as well.

Weapons systems - The suit comes equipped with concussive electromagnetic beams that can bore through 10 feet of solid rock at their maximum settings. The same emitter can also be used to emit an electrostatic charge to interfere with unshielded electronics, and act as TASER when applied to living targets.

Graviton Beam - A beam of graviton particles that can be used like a tractor beam to lift and throw objects up to 100 tons in weight.

Sensors - The suit allows the wearer to see infrared and ultraviolet light, as well as magnifies ambient light as night vision. In addition, the suit's visor acts as a heads-up display and ties into the com system.

Computer Interface - The suit can connect by wire or wirelessly with any computing device in range. However, it is up to the user to be able to manipulate the device once it is connected.

Skills

ADMINISTRATION
At varying points in his young life Mac has been the head of Department H, Alpha Flight and the Canadian Space Agency. In that time he's learned something about managing resources, diplomacy and cutting through red tape.

COMBAT
Mac has been trained by Department H and a number of others, including Wolverine, in hand to hand combat and armed combat. He definitely excels at the former rather than the latter but he is a skilled hand to hand fighter and is knows his way around a number of firearms.

COMPUTERS
It's impossible to get where Mac's gotten in the 21st century and not know a lot about computers. He's more of a hardware than a software guy himself, but he's able to use most systems, learn other quickly and code. He's not much of a hacker but he can figure out some tricks given enough time.

ENGINEERING
Mac has advanced degrees in mechanical and petrochemical engineering. Particularly talented on the mechanical side, he is able to develop, repair and jury rig most human technology. In addition to this he's the Earths foremost expert on Kree technology and has been able to marry it to human technology. This allowed him to design and build the Guardian and Vindicator battle-suits and bring about a quantum leap in Canada's space program giving them their own space station in orbit and Arrow ships, capable of traveling throughout the solar system.

LINGUISTICS
Mac is fluent in both French and English and speaks textbook Kree, which is to say, he learned it from a data file and his lack of contact with actual Kree speakers shows in how he speaks.

PILOTING
Mac's used his time at Department H to become familiar with the operation of a wide number of aircraft. When it comes to spacecraft he knows the theory on how Kree ships operate and developed the manual on how to fly the CSA's Arrow ships.

Resources

ALPHA FLIGHT
Mac is the former leader of Alpha Flight he brought the team together and continues to guide it as one of its leading members. He has full access to the teams resources.

CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY
A former director and one of its leading members Mac is pretty much the reason the CSA is the force that it is today. As a result he can usually count on their support.

DEPARTMENT H
Mac hasn't always agreed with the Department but he is one of their biggest assets and as long as what he's doing doesn't impact their agenda theyre usually willing to help.

WEALTH
Mac owns several patents which earn him a steady income besides money earned from speaking tours and the small bit of royalties that come from Alpha Flight merchandising. He's not super-wealthy like some tech genius superheroes he can name, but he could retire and live very well on the income.

Weaknesses

BATTLESUIT
Outside of the Guardian battle Mac is just man. Sure, he's brilliant and well-trained but with some of the threats that Alpha Flight faces to say nothing of the dangerous vacuum of space sometimes that's not enough to put him in danger.

HUDSON LEGACY
Mac only knows a little of the history of his father's family. He knows about his father's birth out of wedlock, how his grandfather rejected him but nothing else. He is unaware he has two siblings, one of which has powers, or about his familial ties to Wolverine or that Remus looms in the background pulling strings.

ROXXON
Roxxon gave Mac his start after college, helped him design his first suit but when they tried to weaponize it and sell it to Hydra, he and Heather stole it from them and took it to the Canadian government. The result was the loss of reputation, contracts and money to say nothing of keeping them out of Hydras good books. They haven't forgotten and while they haven't made direct moves against Mac, Heather or Alpha Flight recently its still in their plans.

TRUE LOVE
Mac is deeply in love with his wife Heather and would sacrifice just about anything to keep her safe. As well, he is aware of Wolverine's attraction to her, and while not a jealous man, Wolverine brings it out in him.
