At the behest of Caesar Augustus in 10 CE, Agatha Harkness, then known as Appius Sergius Ravilla, cast the "Spell of Humility" over the Gargoyle species, causing their garments to turn to stone during the day. Prior to this, items worn by Gargoyles would remain in their natural state during the day.

In 927 CE, the Archmage won the 39th Tournament of the Vishanti, becoming Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.

In 975 CE, David Xanatos arrived in Ancient Scotland via the Phoenix Gate. He saved the life of Princess Elena of the Alpínid dynasty, and was subsequently rewarded with a few coins. Before leaving the era, he handed a sealed envelope to a member of the Illuminati Society, which itself contained two further sealed envelopes. The housing envelope bore instructions to wait 1,027 years, and then deliver the first envelope to a young David Xanatos of Bar Harbour, Maine. It contained one of the coins, almost worthless in 975, but worth about $20,000 by 2002. The second envelope was to be delivered 15 years later, and contained a detailed account of how the coin was obtained; meaning David Xanatos was indeed a self-made man.

In 984 CE, the Archmage's apprentice, the Magus, assumed the title of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme after the Archmage's apparent demise. He survived by using his astral form to coerce the Weird Sisters into manipulating events.

Ten years later, in 994 CE, the Magus froze Goliath's Clan until Castle Wyvern rose above the clouds. Shortly thereafter, the Magus relinquished his title as Sorcerer Supreme, leaving the title vacant for the remaining 32 years before the next Tournament of the Vishanti. Merlin would subsequently win the following tournament, serving a 6th 100 year term as Sorcerer Supreme, in 1027 CE.

The Magus Princess Katherine, and Tom take the eggs of Goliath's clan to Avalon (the island, not the borough of Blüdhaven, although the two are linked), where King Arthur still sleeps, in 1995 CE.

Macbeth became High King of Scotland in 1044 CE, ruling until his "death" was recorded at Lunfanan in 1057 CE.

In 2016 CE, David Xanatos purchased Castle Wyvern and relocated it to the top of the Eyrie Building, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York, thereby awakening Goliath's Clan.

While there is no specific cut off, in a general sense, Gargoyles is set during a period where Goliath's Clan and Xanatos, while often adversarial, have enough of a truce that both reside in Castle Wyvern. As Xanatos put it, "we made a good team. You know all this time; I've wondered why I let you creatures live. Now I know. You come in handy now and then," while Goliath later said "I believe we can trust him not to destroy us while we sleep."
