Earth, our Earth, officially designated Earth-1999, has been engaged in a millennia old conflict with Earth-8513, better known as Outworld. Originally, they tried to invade by force of arms, but were repelled by Earth's greatest fighters, and a small but highly effective contingent of gods of the Pantheon Assembly.

Rather than fight countless, and costly, battles, a compromise was eventually reached, whereupon every generation, a tournament would be fought between the champions of Earth, and the champions of Outworld. Should Outworld win ten tournaments in a row, they would be allowed to invade, and the Pantheon Assembly would do nothing to oppose them.

Since that bargain was struck, Outworld has come but one tournament away from total victory on two separate occasions, but they have never quite managed to win ten in a row. Meanwhile, Earth is a very different place today than it was in the distant past. There are mutants and metahumans, aliens who live among us, and our technology has advanced to a point where some people could challenge the gods, or take their place.

Thus, the generational tournament is largely kept alive by tradition and for the honours associated with it.

Earth based characters such as Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero are appable as FCs or VFCs. Most Outworld based characters are trapped on Earth-8513 and thus, can only be used as part of a tournament event.
