Atlantean governments have traditionally been monarchistic with parliamentary styling. Besides the ancestral monarchs, both the Kingdom and Principality of Atlantis have a Council of Elders, who are nominated by the monarch, confirmed by the Royal Council, and serve lifetime tenures as the judiciary.

The members of the Royal Council, the legislative branch of government, are elected every four years. To run for a seat in the Royal Council, an individual must be a member of the nobility. Atlantis has a standing army that performs police functions in times of peace. Although both monarchies claim all homo mermani dwelling in the oceans, in actuality the monarchies have well defined boundaries.
