News Files - Vampires Exceptional Vampires

Just becoming a vampire doesn't make one all powerful; though they may actually feel they are the "top of the food chain". But in a very real sense, vampires are a study in Darwinism. There is a reason why, as arrogant as vampires can be, they really aren't in any true positions of power, with very few exceptions.

As a species, vampires tend to weed themselves out. New vampires, unless they have the guiding presence of an experienced and older vampire, are usually unable to control their newly acquired blood lust. They cannot stop themselves from killing those they feed upon. This leads to either the mortal authorities hunting them down and killing them, or other vampires doing the same to stop the threat of their discovery.

It takes many years for a vampire to gain the control, and subtly, to survive on their own, which is why many younger vampires live in small groups (covens, coteries, and packs, etc.) under the watchful eye of their creators.

Even if a vampire reaches "middle age" or older, that doesn't make them overly powerful. More powerful than younger vampires, definitely, but few and far between are the truly exceptional master vampires of legend like Varnae, Drake, or Dracula. Such beings are exceptional, not because of their vampiric age and power, but because each brought something with them. Varnae was a skilled sorcerer of great power and knowledge. Drake was an experienced soldier with a force of personality that few could ignore. Dracula was a literal Prince, used to navigating the ways of power, and with a single-minded drive to procure even more.

Such vampires of this great skill and talent are extremely few and far between. Even if they still live, they are almost a myth among their own kind. "Normal" vampires, even if they style themselves as masters, are more like middle management.
