Brunch Duty
Date of Scene: 07 May 2020
Location: Dining Hall - Xavier's School
Synopsis: A chat of pockets, pranks, and giving back.
Cast of Characters: Phoenix, Cyclops, Shadowcat, Nightingale

Phoenix has posed:
Due to a slight hiccup in the kitchen this morning, breakfast was pushed out later. Someone may or may not have accidentally froze out the stoves. While an impressive feat, it meant that everyone was stuck with cereal, fruit, and bagels until now when some hot food could actually be served. So it's brunchtime at Xavier's, with warming pans set out for people to grab some eggs and bacon or grilled chicken and broccoli - whatever tickles the fancy.

Between rounds, Jean swung by for a quick cup of coffee and a makeshift breakfast BLT cobbled together from the offerings. She's at the back corner of the dining room and tapping out a message on a tablet while her food gets cold next to her. Business first, as usual.

Cyclops has posed:
Heading into the dining room with a piece of buttered toast and a mug of coffee is Scott. He leans over to give Jean a kiss to the cheek before he settles in next to her. As usual, he is in a button down shirt, a tie and a pair of slacks. The ever professional.

"Good morning, Miss Grey. Bobby has been banned from the kitchen .. again .. for another thirty days." Pinching his brows gently together for a moment, he looks exasperated. "Sometimes it's hard to believe he's in his twenties and still not a teenager when we all started." He says, chuckling to himself for a brief moment before he smooths his expression out.

"What are your plans today? I'm waiting on a call from a potential student's family from Shanghai before we arrange for transport."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty's got no paperwork to do. Nah. So she's perfectly happy with said cereal, she's got milk, sugar, spoon and munching at it, down the other end of the table and is enjoying it, before she loks up and smiles. "Hey" Kitty says once the spoon's set down and her mouth's empty.

Kitty looks over to Jean and adds mushed up bananna to her cerreal and nods to Scott. "Again? Do I need to just leave his paperwork out on my desk all the time?" she adds and inspects what she's made for cereal. "Hey I'm doing just fine over here. Got my cereal. I'm an adult, I swear" Kitty says raising her hand. Mutant's hnor, or...or...something?
Kitty grins and returns to her food and shakes her head with a smile.

Nightingale has posed:
With the season growing warm, there was one culinary offering that one student insisted be available--even if it came down to making it herself. Which, this time, it did. So, amongst the warming pans and various edible delights, there was a large pot of...

...clear broth clam chowder. Oh, yes. That delightfully salty, ocean-like tang lingered in the air, promising a bowl of warmth filled with potatoes, vegetables, and fruits of the sea. It's a delicacy that Shannon is indulging in rather liberally, as she carries a tray with a large bowl of the chowder, some fresh, warm bread and butter, and a rather large mug of coffee. She's in some light blue jeans, her favorite flip-flops with the daisies on the toes, and a loose-fitting tunic tank top with a modest scoop neckline, in pale blue silk. She's grumbling, too, as she plops down at a table nearby the group. "I swear, if I find out who froze the kitchen, they are dead meat!"

Phoenix has posed:
"He'll never grow up, Scott. You know that." Jean says with exasperated affection as she looks up from her tablet. A side glance towards Kitty and there's a chuckle from the redhead as she teases, "You close his folder? Rookie mistake. At this stage, he's due for his own incident code."

She leans herself back from her own work to take a sip of cooling coffee. "I'm just catching up on some small things that I've been putting off and finalizing some student requests for events to be added to the summer calendar. We do need to get the court surface refinished after that jet incident, it's still a bit bubbled from the heat."

The smell of soup wafting by has her eyes tracking Shannon as she finds herself a seat. There's a knowing gleam in her eyes at the threat which spreads a grin back on her face. "Plenty have tried, Miss Lance. So far, he manages to still keep kicking."

Cyclops has posed:
Taking his phone out, Scott begins to tap away into his notes application. "Resurface court. Got it. I should make Bobby do it." There is a small twitch of his lips at the thought, though he shakes his head. "Kidding. Of course. It would be a punish to us when he turns it into a skating rink."

"Good morning, Kitty." He says to his teammate as he eyes her cereal for a moment, as if calculating how much sugar she may have put into it, then goes back to nibbling on his toast. "You don't need to worry about the faculty's paperwork. I can follow up on that myself. Just focus on the students."

And, speaking of, he glances upwards at the voice of the New Mutant. "Good morning, Miss Lance. You know who did it and you can be assured for at least thirty days, he won't be able to do it again." Or he will quadruple Bobby's DR routines and make his life very uncomfortable.

Shadowcat has posed:
"I needed room on my desk" Kitty says with a laugh, "So" Kitty says and looks thoughtful for a moment, munching away happily on cereal and fruit. Hey, it's her balanced meal thank you as she's munching away and listens, all but snorting at the comment about Bobby. Okay, that's a good point actually. He's a tough one, really...

Shaking her head with a smile, Kitty doesn't say a wordd, just munching away happily with a smie. Not her place to jump in on how the school's run. Which is oky. Kitty's got her own spot in the school staff. She's more concerned with making sure the students don't kill each other for freezing the stoves.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon just gets a surprisingly evil little smirk on her face. It wasn't much of a secret she had a bit of a beef against Bobby to begin with. She never forgot the dressing-down he gave her for following orders as best she could on her first major mission out in the field. So she just hums to herself, but one can almost see the mental gears turning....

Be afraid, Bobby Drake. Be /very/ afraid.

Phoenix has posed:
"Yah, let's not have him fix the court." Jean says with a faint grimace as the mental imagery plays out. "What he could do is help clean out some of the extra rooms we'll need for new students. There's plenty of dust that should keep him busy for awhile, and it'll be a big help so we know early if we need any repairs or new furniture."

After a bite of sandwich, she turns to look towards Kitty. "Speaking of room, is there anything you need for your office? And everything else going okay with the students since we're down to the crunch time of the year?"

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty shakes her head with a smile. "Just the usual things you find in an office. I'll need a computer and I was going to just leave it up to both of you as to where and what goes in it as long as I can work" Kitty nods and looks over to Shannon, quirking a brow at that look Shannon's got.

Oh, Bobbby is in for it. Kity's just gonna keep her head down and avoid angering the one who makes her food

Nightingale has posed:
Is that a... cackle, coming from the general direction of the usually mild-mannered healer in training? Are there devil horns hidden in her hair, that hold up what normally seems to be a halo? What horrors await Bobby Drake in the coming days?

     Only time will tell.

Kitty is wise, though Shannon is hardly the one to make food for the whole school. She just dabbles in some good cooking on occasion.

Smiling over at Jean, she chuckles a little bit. "I could be making more work for myself here than need be, but if there's some home dec sewing to be done, it'd give me something else to do over the summer, in addition to the usual things....?"

Cyclops has posed:
As he sips his coffee and listens, Scott is catching up on the news for the day as he thumbs through the screen of his phone. He gives a furrow of his brows at something, then lets out a soft 'huh' in his throat. He gives a few more scrolls before he tucks it away into his shirt pocket.

He tilts his head over to Shannon for a moment before he glances to Kitty. "The equipment for your office is in the garage in boxes. Let me know if you need help setting it up."

Shadowcat has posed:
"Well, given I can't balance it on my Vespa I'll just walk it over" Kitty says. "If it's got manuals I can probably work through it all but I'd appreciate the helpp. I could always ask Miss Lance here to help and keep her out of trouble?" Kitty offers with a saccharine sweet smile to poor Shannon. It's the sort of mile that's dripping with sweetness. Kitty's up to no good, too. Sort of.

"Though I'm sure we can manage. If it's self assembly, I'll just ask our groundskeeper to help. Speaking of, I was going to set a movie night for over the weekend. And since I said groundskeeper, you can probably work out one film that's going to be shown, but if you've got any requests or movie ideas, I'm all for that" Kitty grins. "Once I get done eating I'll set up a ballot box in the foyer for you all, how's that sound?" she asks with a nod.

Phoenix has posed:
"I'm sure we can find some side projects for students to get involved in over the summer." Jean says to Shannon, "But that's if there's nothing else more important like lessons, practice, or team events. Those always come first. I get wanting to take your mind off of continual work, though. If sewing is something you enjoy, I'll see what all needs to be done."

If she is aware there are shenanigans afoot in Shannon's mind, she doesn't let on. Hard to think she wouldn't with witch cackling occurring. She does add in a very mother-knows kind of tone, "Now, in the case of a certain someone, some side projects and other eye opening events might help his ego cool to match his skillset. Nothing to take him away from his duties, but I'm sure we'll think of something." She concludes that statement with a calm, slow sip of coffee.

Nightingale has posed:
Shannon giggles, and chimes right in with movie suggestions. "I'm all for either Spaceballs, or one of the Airplane movies." Perhaps fare better suited to slightly older students, but still indicative of a very quirky, off-beat sense of humor. Glancing right over at Kitty, she comes out with a completely deadpan voice and expression. "Surely you can't be serious about that, miss Pryde?"

Oh come on, Kitty, you can do it! You know how to cap that line!

A smile of a more innocent sort is offered to Jean, and she nods. "Yeah, there's always lessons and team exercises and such. And I'm /this/ close to healing without winding up in the medbay from it." She smiles some and nods. "But I wouldn't mind something just plain out /normal/ like a little sewing here and there. It's very relaxing. OH... by the by, anybody have any idea what the Professor's favorite colors are? I was thinking of making him a new lap quilt for Christmas, and the sooner I get going on that the better."

Shadowcat has posed:
Kitty shakes her head. Jean's utterly terrifying with that calm facade. Kitty looks pleased. "Oh can i borrow him and get nothing but flat pack furniture and we can give him all the side proejects?" Kitty giggles. She's joking,of course. But...Jean's got a good point. "On a serious note, mind. I've a few side projects I'd like to get done over the summer as well. And, I am, and don't call me Shirley" Kitty fires right back to Shannon. Kit Kat's in her element. Who says guidance counselling has to be stuffy and formal and, and, all that? Kitty's only a tiny bit older than the seniors and about the same age as a junior in college so she can relate more to them and gives Shannon a grin. "Good suggestions. Would you like to be in charge of making snacks?" Kitty adds with a smile. Oh she's got movie ideas in mind but all oenne part of the summer.

Cyclops has posed:
"I do believe The Professor fancies the colors blue and white. He has a checkered blanket he used to wear over his legs in his chair during the winter. It's getting a bit old though and could be replaced." Scott says as he takes the last few bites of his toast to finish it off, then dabs at his lips iwth a napkin after licking the crumbs away.

He also gives a side glance to Jean, chuckling softly. << You are being a troll, love. >> He murmurs to her through their mental link, picking up his mug to take another sip of his coffee while it is still warm. << But he deserves it. >>

Phoenix has posed:
<< The chances of anyone getting hurt are fairly low. >> Jean remarks back to Scott serenely. << Besides, it'll do him good to have a student or two show him up at his own game. He can be so much more than he is, and I know he's comfortable, but it's about time he learn that we're not the students anymore. One day, maybe he will. >>

Jean looks back towards the girls as talk of Christmas rolls around. "Ugh, don't remind me. Day after Christmas and it's time to plan for the next. Scott's right, though. Blues, whites, and golds; always a classic around here. He was musing he does wish he had more places in reach to store things, so a quilt with pockets may help do the trick. He can only fit so many storage compartments in that chair. Now I just wish more clothing makers understood the importance of pockets."

Shadowcat has posed:
"Pockets are amazing" Kitty concurs and finishes up her cereal finally. There's the sound of movement from under the table. "And I got a furry fuzzy friend on my feet. it's like Lockheed doesn't want me to get up and go anywhere. Though" Kitty admits with a smile. "Blues, whites, golds. Hmm, instead of a blanket, maybe one of those Snuggie types with more pockets than anyone knows what to do with?" Kitty adds with a nod. "I mean, can't complain if there's too many pockets. Though" she admits, with her eyes glinting with amusement.

"THough" she says looking over them all in turn. "Wouldn't too many pockets just encourage hoarding?"

Nightingale has posed:
There's a subtle shift in the winged teen's expression as talk of Christmas plans rolls around--by her own doing, granted, but still, the chance to simply /give/ is one she relishes and will take full advantage of. "You know," Shannon muses. "The design I have in mind would sure go a lot faster with a lot of hands to help. I could round up a few of the younger students to help a bit, so the quilt could sort of be from all of us. And maybe there'd be enough bits to spare from their efforts, make enough quilts for new incoming students. Sort of a 'welcome wagon' gift to them...."

She purses her lips briefly, glancing between Scott and Jean. Had they been like this when they were students here? There were two good examples to learn from, if she intended to do the same, and stay on to give back to the place that had already given so much to her....

Cyclops has posed:
"We usually have an Xavier Welcoming gift bag set up in their dorm rooms. Notebooks, pencils, pens, a laptop." Scott says as he rubs his hand along his chin. "But if you want to coordinate some type of blanket program, that is fine. Perhaps Alexis as our new full time performing arts instructor can make a run with you to a craft shop to buy supplies. We can break in her new corporate card."

As he swirls the coffee about in his cup, he stares are the remains of it before taking a long, final sip to finish it off. "Perhaps we can have you or Megan travel with us to a student's home when we go to pick them up and take them to the school. Some of the students have situations in which they can't take public transportation easily. We could use a student ambassador program I suppose. Megan is a senior after all, about to graduate."

Phoenix has posed:
"Actually..." Mulls Jean as she taps the stylus of her tablet against the tabletop. "That's an idea too. A Christmas in July. Secret Santas may be an option so there's less stress about a lot of gifts, and there can be some other events too." She scribbles that down on a note titled Summer Events, the rest of it an almost illegible array of ideas and half-baked thoughts. "We can also rope in some community givebacks too, like a blanket and coat drive so they're prepared for fall. That plus Scott's ambassador idea sound like some jumping off points fo projects."

It's then a calendar event pops up and she lets out a groaned huff. "Alright, I gotta run. Meeting in five. It shouldn't be more than an hour and I'll have an open door after that, so come visit if anyone needs me." She'll gather up her things and see her dishes taken over - taken, not floated - before flashing a grin and a wave on her way out.

Nightingale has posed:
There's a very sharp ache that translates into furrowed brows, and Shannon shakes her head. "I'm sure Alexis has better things to do," she counters, her voice taking on a mildly sharper tone than before, her words a tiny bit clipped. However, if the subject were pressed, it did not seem likely she would protest much.

"Student ambassador?" She lofts her eyebrows, steepling her fingers briefly. "I'd be happy to help, if you need, and Megan, of course. Not sure what else would be involved but..." She smiles a little bit. "I remember I was shy and scared out of my gourd coming here. Felt pretty alone, even with the people who loved and understood me best bringing me here. How much worse it must be for some other students, in much less ideal situations..."

Cyclops has posed:
"I know her schedule. I assure you, she doesn't have that much on her plate yet as she is currently adjusting from adjunct to full time faculty." Scott says as his brows raise up a bit over his shades. He takes note of the tone and makes a mental note to follow up on that later. "But, if you would rather make such a trip with Miss Pryde, that is acceptable as well."

Giving a nod of his head towards Jean, he pushes himself up as well, brushing a few crumbs from his slacks, then adjusts his tie to tighten it. "It is why we have this school, so we can give children the confidence to be themselves without fear. You are a good example of our work here, Miss Lance. As is Miss Gwynn." To Jean, he says, "I'll tag along with you on the way to my office. I have a few calls to make before I head out to Taiwan tonight. Logan is coming with me. Wish me luck." He says with a slight grin.
