There was a great deal of food for thought since the visit to Richard Dragon's dojo some days prior, as well as over Christmas with Remy. If Riana could tell those two of what she was, how could she keep it from her own father and sister?

It was a dilemma. On one hand, her silence could protect them. On the other, she hated keeping secrets from them--and this was a fairly big one to keep. It left her in a pensive mood for days, with sleep becoming a precious commodity in short supply. The days began to go by in something of a haze.

This couldn't last. Something had to give.

Finally, that evening, Riana sat down at her small kitchen table, with her favorite hobnail glass table lamp in a place of honor, picked up the phone and dialed her father's number, back in Danvers, Massachusetts. Though her hand trembled on the phone, she kept her voice calm and steady.

"Hello, da? It's me, Riana. Listen, we really need to talk. Are you sitting down...?"
