Profile

Henri de Fontainebleau, French antiquarian by day, turns into the Hellequin at night, the French counterpart of Herne, of the Wild Hunt. Folklore being what it is, not many facts can be checked. While seemingly harmless by daytime, the Hellequin at night leads the immortal Hunt against all living-dead, witches, sorcerers, evil spawns and unrepentant miscreants.

Description:

Although the man seems to be in his early thirties, his facial features denote a certain experience of life that would better fit a way older man. Clean shaven, his light brown hair are kept at shoulder length, framing the blue eyes and generally nice looking face.

Hellequin generally wears a dark green camouflage hunting coat, a beige shirt, brown pants and black steel toe work boots. When seen walking around, even in the city, he'll carry a walking stick, quite a large one at that. Otherwise, the baton would be tucked in two-piece and slung over his shoulder.

History:

The Hellequin is the French counterpart of Herne, of the Wild Hunt. Folklore being what it is, not many facts can be checked.

Henri de Fontainebleau was born on leap year 1184, near Paris, France. Not being of aristocratic parentage, he wasn't allowed to be trained as a Knight, so he turned to hunting in which is excelled. So much, that he became the King's own Master Hunter.

During a hunting excursion in the spring of 1217, Henri fell while crossing a river and died, drowning.

What happened next, even is still unclear to him. Waking up at night, Henri blessed his good luck, recited a couple Ave Maria and went on with his life. It took him a few minutes to realize that life had changed. That first night as the Hellequin went on like a dream, with him being explained his role in afterlife. Having no say in the decision, he could only thank God for having bestowed this holy mission on him. Certain now to be a ghost, he right away tried to contact his loved ones, but this was not granted as they could not see him.

The loved ones eventually died - and he was glad he didn't have to Hunt their souls. Back then, it seems, there were more souls to hunt, so many evil doers and unrepentant sinners. Witches and sorcerers were all over! But then, Evil adapted and found new ways of possessing God's creatures. The Hunt became more demanding in discerning the true evil souls. The Hellequin, instead of retiring from a job he didn't ask for, found himself even more busy, finding evil in all aspects of modern life. Lately, increasing sorcery and witchcraft activity in New York City caught his attention.

Personality

Personality:

Back then when he was really alive, Henri can remember being a jolly companion, drinking and enjoying life. Centuries of hunting lost souls and unrepentant evil doers rendered him quite solitary in nature. His sense of humour also deteriorated over the centuries, finding no joy or amusement in his task, while witnessing the lowest in Humanity over the ages. One would not expect such a guy to be optimistic, and he really isn't indeed. Deeply Christian, the Hellequin likes to refer to scriptures and old prayers which he can be heard reciting before and after striking the evil souls. But the Hellequin, despite being blessed - or cursed - with the vengeful mission, kept most of his human free will and conscience, allowing him to still learn and adapt. Which explains in part how, from a senseless killing wraith, the Hellequin developed a sense of compassion for his victims. Still, when the Hellequin sets his sight on a lost soul, there is nothing to deter him from his task.

Abilities

Ethereal Travel:
In his nightly ethereal form, the Hellequin can travel wherever he wishes to on this planet. Although folklore depicts him as a horseman, he can also cross the ether in other fashion: he might be seen walking or running, which can be done almost normally. Travelling distances in his ethereal form takes some time, but can be seen as almost instantaneous. Massive magical activity at a given location acts as a magnet and increases his speed, as evil becomes a beacon for him.
(OOC: see Magic Detection for exceptions)

Ethereal Weapons:
Hellequin the Hunter is armed with basic weapons of his time, namely a halberd, a scourge weapon and a large dagger. When on the Hunt, he would normally use the two-handed sword. On contact, the blade causes local fire to clothing or skin. If not extinguished right away, the ethereal fire will propagate to the clothing or skin. If the blade breaks skin, the wound will be most painful, and covered in fire. Multiple hits will cause death. Beware the halberd, as it can swiftly behead any living - or unliving - being.

Immortality:
The Hellequin is mortal by daylight, and immortal in his ethereal form, by night time. That said, being regenerated every day no matter what, he is basically immortal.

Magic Detection:
Part of Hellequin's initial mission is to rid the world of the ungodly, unrepentant and evil souls. Over the centuries, he developed a six sense for all things magic, which ultimately will help him to detect most witches or sorcerers. The closer he stands to them, the stronger he can detect them. The Hellequin, neither being a god nor being of an angelic nature, possesses a limited Magic detection: the most powerful witches and sorcerers can remain undetectable to him.
(OOC consent will be needed for him to detect High Level Magic Users)

Magic Resistance:
Hellequin was created by a divine power to combat evil. As such, he was granted a resistance to magic since some of the creatures he hunts wield it. He is resistant to magic cast by low level magic users and many mid-level. This is not to say their spells have no effect, but they are lessened. Lower level Magic Users will find him very slightly affected by their spells, which might distract him for a short moment. Mid Level Magic users will have more chances of disrupting his Hunt and their spells will have longer lasting effects on him. Since he is not actually a ghost (despite his appearance), he is not able to be bound the normal ways a ghost might, such as with a circle of salt, and cold iron is not something that will make him disappear. If they use spells that are created to combat divine (heavenly) powers, they will find those most effective.

High level magic users such as Zatanna, Doctor Strange, etc., would be able to affect him despite this built-in resistance. Also, gods, particularly those wielding magical weapons, are something he could not resist. After all, they are divine in their own way, despite being of other religious origins. (OOC Note: This power is to help enhance storytelling. What is best for story will be the way things go since obviously that is more enjoyable for everyone.)

Promethean:
Hellequin, the French Hunter of the Wild Hunt, takes a mortal human form by daytime, and returns to his ethereal form comes nightfall. In his mortal form, by daytime, the Hellequin can be killed like any other mortal. This cycle occurs daily, no matter what. In his ethereal form, the Hellequin appears as a slightly larger than life human, with the texture of a greyish wraith or ghost. In this form, he is usually seen in some type of Medieval-like attire. Although it looks like he has no substance in this ethereal form, he does interact with solid objects or beings. The same goes for his Ethereal Weapons and Dogs, which might look like immaterial at first look, but can destroy or kill.

Regeneration:

The Hellequin dies from his mortal form every day, at nightfall. This appears as a small puff of smoke, the body just disappears. He then turns into his ethereal form until daylight, when he is regenerated to his mortal form. Any wound received in mortal form, vanishes during the night and when regenerated the next day, he comes back in his mortal form, unwounded. In his ethereal form, the Hellequin cannot be killed. The point of regeneration is usually a nearby church or sacred location.

Skills

Antique Knowledge:
What one might see as ruins of Medieval churches and forts, the Hellequin saw them being built. The same goes for most of the antiques of today. He is an expert in such antiques, an expertise based on over 800 years of knowledge.

History:
The Hellequin has been a direct witness to all major events that happened since the early 13th Century. Of course, he might have missed a few things and even forgot some details. In rare conversations he has with the mortals, History is his favorite topic. Pair that with him being French, and one might have the Hellequin sit down for a lengthy chat.

Master Hunter:
Henri de Fontainebleau was the King's own Master Hunter. He had natural skills for hunting when he was living. With no fear of death and centuries at mastering the art, the Hennequin is one of the best hunters, master of the Wild Hunt.

Occult Knowledge:
Like any good hunter learning about the habits of its preys, the Hellequin developed a quite deep knowledge of magic, charms, spells, incantations, and the like. These are magical doings that help him find his targets. Although he /knows/ about how they are done and how they work, the Hellequin will never use any of these diabolical means. He rather relays on prayers. Part of the Occult Knowledge focuses on demonology, on the evil Master of the lost souls and his array of evil beings, which he can find and destroy.
(OOC: see Magic Detection for exceptions)

Sword Master:

Although the Hellequin can use a halberd and other blades, his weapon of choice is the ethereal sword. In his mortal form, he has the same abilities with these weapons as he does in his ethereal form. Being a man of /his/ time, he doesn't like firearms, though might use them if absolutely necessary.

Resources

Antiquarian:
In order to support his mission and daily life, Henri (the Hellequin by night), has established a quite prosperous antiques business. He specializes in Medieval European antiques, of Christian origin. This includes weapons, statues, jewelry, coins... but nothing related to magic or sorcery. As a side business, he's also a consultant in antique buildings - mostly churches - restauration.

Dogs From Hell:

The Hellequin is often seen accompanied by his two Dogs from Hell - French mastiff. The Dogs can only accompany him on the Hunt, at night, in their ethereal form: they were not granted daily regeneration. Beware these Dogs, as they almost make one in mind with the Hellequin, obeying him without much of a spoken command and often just by a slight gesture of the hand. Although they will not hunt and attack of their own will, they will defend the Hellequin if he is under attack.

Weaknesses

Bodies of Water:
Even if you know that you'll be reborn if you die today, dying isn't a pleasant experience. His first real death was by drowning, and Henri will rather avoid risking dying in this fashion again, while in mortal form. Henri never learned to swim and is still scared of drowning. As the ethereal Hellequin, on the Hunt at night, he would not care about large bodies of water.

Death Wish:
The Hellequin has only one dream: to die for good. Living eternally isn't pleasant, at least, for him.

Divine & Infernal Weapons:
Although resistant to most magic (including spells against Ghosts), the Hellequin can be hurt by magic of a Divine or Infernal nature, such as angel blades or blades from Hell. Things like Angel Blades and the Hell Forged daggers wielded by archdemons can kill archangels and archdemons, after all. Hellequin is not immune being of a lower level. These types of weapons can mean final death for him. If only he knew that!

Education:
Originally trained at the Court of Fontainebleau in the 12th Century, and busy every night since he died the first time, the Hellequin didn't delve into formal education. While he took notice of scientific progress over the ages, he never really cared to learn much about it. Henri/Hellequin is not very educated, he can read and write, do basic calculations. Once in a while, he might be using Latin prayers that he learned by heart. History, now, this he knows well, as he often witnessed it in the making.

Magic:
He is not immune to all magic but he is highly resistant to low and mid-levels. However, he is most vulnerable to magic that targets the Divine, being his powers were granted him by on of the angelic host. These spells will have the most effect and, if wielded by a higher level magic user, could possibly even destroy him.

Mortal As Mortal:
While he is immortal, Hellequin practically dies from his mortal form everyday, at night time. Wounds or lethal blow will affect him in his mortal form, he could even die from them like any living Human: in this case, he'll come back the next night in his ethereal form, and mortal again by the next daylight.

Sociability:

The Hellequin is far from being sociable. The kind of life he's leading doesn't help in creating lasting relationships. He doesn't seek much contact with mortals, although he does some as an antiquarian. In his dealings in his mortal form, he is very awkward and outdated.
