Description

James Bartholomew Olsen, Called Jimmy by friends and family (unless he is in trouble), is a barely-into-his-twenties young man with a slightly rounded face that still has a little of his 'baby-fat' yet is starting to show some more mature definition, piercing blue eyes and an unruly mop of Ginger hair. His cheeks are smattered with a heavy dusting of freckles on otherwise pale skin and a hint of stubble that only someone his age can make look good. At 5'10 he's average in height but his build is what one would call lanky. Not overly built, his and legs have a wiry strength to them while his hands and feet seem a little to large for him, like a puppy.

History

James Bartholomew Olsen, Called Jimmy by friends and family (unless he was in trouble), was born to Jake and Sarah Olsen in Suicide Slum. His father joined the military right out of high school to support his teenage wife and while on a mission (recruited secretly by S.H.I.E.L.D.) in Afghanistan was declared missing, and then killed, in action mere months before before Jimmy was born. In the absence of a father figure, Sarah Olsen became extremely protective of her son.

Jimmy grew up and attended school in the worst part of metropolis and while he was was a very bright child he sometimes grew bored with his schoolwork and skipped school to explore the streets or, sometimes attend lectures at the local college. Interested in journalism and photography, both nurtured by his ailing maternal grandfather who had been an army photojournalist in the Vietnam War, Jimmy would sneak around the backstreets to get 'the scoop' on the dealings and happenings. More then once he would get in trouble, much to his mother's fears.

Jimmy would earn his GED at 15 and call in a few favors from some 'real' reporters he had aided with information to get himself a job at the Daily planet, initially in the IT department as a Gopher. It was here that he first met Lois lane, after helping her repair her computer. Within a short time, Jimmy's eagerness and likable nature earned him a chance to follow Lois Lois into the field when her usual photographer walked off a story. Although Jimmy was a talented photographer, both Lois and their boss Perry White were often reluctant to send the youth on assignments they felt were outside of Jimmy's capabilities but each and every time he proved himself and soon became a regular in the photographer's pool.

Jimmy's life changed forever however the day he met Metropolis' chosen hero, Superman. What Jimmy never realized, was that Superman was also his new friend and mild-mannered co-worker, Clark Kent. Jimmy took the first published photograph of Superman during a disaster that almost killed him and Lois. The photo earned him a Pulitzer.

Being young and brash and brave, Jimmy followed and recorded the Man of Steel's career closely and time and time again he become embroiled in so many of the hero's adventures that he developed a close friendship with Superman (not knowing he was Clark) and was called by allies and enemies alike 'Superman's' Pal'. This in itself became part of Jimmy's fame but over the years he began to wonder if thats all he was.. Superman's Pal. If all he was worth was being the photographic chronicler of Superman's Story and, sometimes, hostage to be used against him. If he truly was a talented photojournalist and not someone who had just stumbled luckily into the spotlight. And not even the main spotlight at that, always overshadowed by heroes like Superman or even reporters like Lois and Clark.

So as much as he respected Superman, and his fellow mentors Lois Lane and Clark Kent, Jimmy decided to take a leave of absence from the Daily Planet to strike it out on his own as a freelance photojournalist, travelling both around Metropolis and the world, following stories and risking life and limb to acquire those snapshots of history being made /beyond/ Superman. That doesn't mean he won't call Superman if he feels he needs to but he is trying to make it in the world on his own.

Personality

Jimmy is almost always in good mood and in excellent spirits. He is curious, dedicated and quite brilliant. While he comes off as the sharp, cool urban kid he has a good heart and will always help his fellow men. One could say that adventuring is in his very soul. He is so impatient to get things done that he often forgets to spell-check his own writings, much to the dismay of his boss Perry White. Sometimes his enthusiasm can get the best of him. It's not that Jimmy's a troublemaker, he's simply one of those confident, unflappable kids who has no idea that he frequently oversteps his boundaries.

Abilities

CALL IT A HUNCH
Jimmy has an excellent and /almost/ preternatural sense of intuition. It's what allows him to come to conclusions, make hunches, and so forth with only a modicum of information at his fingertips.

Skills

ATHLETICS
In junior high Jimmy was a an expert pole vaulter and track star.

DISGUISE
Even as a kid, Jimmy saw the usefulness of pretending to be someone else if only to keep himself out of trouble. As time has passed he has refined this survival skill to allow him to get into places unseen (more or less) to get the facts and pictures for his next story.

DRIVING
Jimmy is a skilled driver, a skill rare among city dwellers. He has driven scooters, motorbikes, cars and even a race car.

JOURNALISM
While not initially formally educated as a journalist, Jimmy gained his first journalist experience literally in the field and at the feet of Lois Lane and Clark Kent. His natural aptitude to research and investigation has made up for the lack of formal education though he started taking courses at CUNY a few years ago.

MULTINLINGUAL
Growing up in the simmering melting pot of cultures that makes up Suicide Slum, Jimmy is conversant (if not FULLY fluent) in Spanish and Korean. Add through his association and adventures with Superman over the years can read and speak Kryptonese (at least as good as a Kryptonian adolescent).

PHOTOGRAPHY
Jimmy is a naturally skilled photographer, having started as a young teen taking pictures with an old non-digital camera he inherited form his grandfather who was a Charlie MoPic photographer for the US Army during the Vietnam War. It's also his grandfather who taught him to be a photographer before he passed, as well as how to develop film the old fashioned way which is a lost skill in this day and age.

STREETWISE
Born in Suicide Slum, Jimmy developed his street sense at quite a young age. He knows the ins and outs of the streets intimately and can usually find news sources that few other older reporters can match.

TECH SAVVY
Though he was born into an age of relatively cheap consumerism, Jimmy grew up poor enough that he rarely had the newest gadgets. To save money he taught himself how to rebuild and fix most relatively advanced electronics and, over time, to build his own if need be. The skill has come in handy, like when he built his first signal watch to alert Superman, to repair his cameras and, sometimes, sabotage equipment while pursuing a story of aiding someone in need. He is quite well versed in the use of computers, enough so that he could make a decent hacker if he truly set his mind to it.

Resources

CAMERAS
Jimmy always has a camera on him, if not more than one. His pride and joy is his grandfather's Nikon F which he used as an Army "Charlie MoPic" during the Vietnam war, but he has a plethora of various digital cameras (both DSLR and Standard), his camera on his cellphone and and even a few disposable cameras tucked away just in case.

COMPRESSED AIR PEN
Another one of Jimmy's gadgets is a specially made pen that could fire a jet of compressed air with sufficient force of a punch being thrown by a prize fighter.

DISGUISE KIT
Jimmy has built up a comprehensive disguise kit with make up, small prosthetics, costumes and props he can use to hide his identity while chasing a story.

MOTHER
His only surviving relative, and a constant (if loving pain) in his rear, Sarah Olsen is always there to help her son if he needs it. She is overprotective, true, but.. hell.. She's his /mom/.

SIGNAL WATCH
Jimmy's 'infamous' signal watch is a device able to transmit a hypersonic signal that only Superman can hear. He built the original watch himself but apparently it was destroyed and later was replaced by a newer one as a gift from Superman himself. The current watch apparently, according to Jimmy, has stopped working but...

SWISS ARMY KNIFE
The only item he has from his father, returned to him by a friend in the army. Jimmy treasures this knife and hides it in a special compartment in his shoe. Because he's gotten in trouble to many times in his life not to have an ace up his sleeve.

Weaknesses

CURIOUS
Jimmy is curious to a fault, always trying to find the truth, and be damned if anything gets in his way.

IMPETUOUS
Jimmy is brash and brave and impetuous, willing to jump into any situation to get the perfect shot or to aid someone in need.

ONLY HUMAN
In a world of super-humans, aliens and even gods (little g), Jimmy is only human. He has no powers (well, sometimes he gets them but thats a WHOLE other story) and is fragile

SUPERMAN'S PAL
Even though Jimmy has distanced himself somewhat from Superman he is still known as Superman's pal and with that blessing also comes the curse of being a target by any one of Superman's enemies.
