Profile

How can a single person manage to hold down jobs as a technical consultant to the N.S.A. and the O.N.E. and S.H.I.E.L.D. and continue to create inventions that improve everyday life in small ways? Meredith Stinson does it by being the hypersonic speedster known as Tachyon! The nationally known heroine was originally an everyday super genius working on solving global hunger through the use of superluminal travel to overcome transport issues. A fateful lab accident ended that line of research but left Meredith endowed with the ability to travel at hypersonic speeds. Now she runs her own business empire while also taking time to help out the United States when the odd global emergency beckons.

GENIUS

Dr. Stinson is one of the sharpest minds of her generation, a true prodigy in every sense of the word. While her IQ trails behind the likes of Mr. Fantastic, the difference certainly is not discernable to the general public.

HEALING

Meredith's ability to accelerate her body also affects her healing. She tends to heal scrapes and bruises in hours, lacerations and bones mend after a night's rest.

HYPERSONIC REACTION

Tachyon has an amazing reaction time, even when not engaged in a speed run. At a casual rest her reaction time is easily two or three times peak human ability. When engaged in motion her reaction speed increases accordingly until she reaches a point where everything that is not moving as fast as she is simply seems to be standing still.

INERTIAL NEGATION

On a subconscious level Tachyon is able to extend her speed force aura to small items on or near her person, this allows them to survive moving at the fantastic speeds that she does. This allows her to not shred her clothes while moving at hypersonic speeds or to speed read through a book without destroying every page as she turns it. While she can use this to protect small items like vials or cell phones it doesn't work with people. She can still move with people at superhuman speeds, but they are subjected to the effects of immediately accelerating to whatever speed she chooses to go.

LIGHTSPEED BARRAGE

While perhaps an overly colorful name, Tachyon's punches pack a whallop. Speed plus mass means that her punch is punishing and can come in such rapid succession that they're especially brutal. In fact the main things holding her back from plowing through superhuman enemies is a fear of damaging her own hands even with protective energies that stop her body from being degraded at high speeds. She can still take out most average level human opponents incredibly fast, even groups, but she has to take excessive care to not land a punch so hard she'll actually kill them.

SPEED FORCE

Though she suspects it, Meredith is unaware of the fact that she taps into the Speed Force in order to hyper accelerate herself. She is intrinsically linked to it and effectively is a part of it, though she does not react to it the way some speedsters do. Her average speed is a leisurely Mach 5 with no residual inertia or detrimental impact on the environment. (That is to say, she does not cause sonic booms when she moves to another area.) The only things her speed impacts are when she comes into contact with something other than a gas, she will cause water to spray if she runs across the surface of the sea or dust to plume behind her in a desert.

Tachyon has no theoretical maximum speed limit though the dangers of pushing herself too hard are incredibly severe.

VORTEX

Meredith has learned that with careful and precise control she can move in circles tight enough and fast enough to create a vortex. These can be as small as a narrow cylinder to distract or even lift a human equivalent opponent or impressive enough to spontaneously form tornadoes or even forcibly snuff large fires by simply impelling too much wind into the area. This ability functions by her subconsciously manipulating her power's ability to negate her speed's impact on the air around her, but does require her to be in motion at great speed.

WATER WALKING

Tachyon can move quickly enough that each impact of her foot on a liquid meets the equivalent resistance of a solid mass. This allows her to run across lakes, rivers or even oceans.

EDUCATION

Meredith is a true Renaissance woman in that she is a literal master of multiple disciplines. She has formal doctorates in physics, engineering and rocket science. She holds degrees in psychology, mathematics, biology, computer programming, chemistry and photography. Past that she has expert knowledge of a multitude of other fields and is quick to pick up information on new interests.

FIGHTING

Meredith is a big fan of cheesy action flicks, mainly because fast paced action was one of the few things she couldn't precisely and accurately deconstruct in entirety on a first view, at least before she gained her powers. This led to a lifetime's accumulation of passing knowledge of how to throw a punch, kick and block a blow. When it turned out she might actually get into a fight she spent a few hours throwing several hundred thousand punches and kicks at reinforced concrete walls. At this point she is a competent, if not exceptional fighter.

HACKING

Tachyon is really good with computers, like really good. She writes prototype OSes as a hobby and regularly tries to crack government databases simply to let them know about security vulnerabilities. Beyond that she also types at a profound speed, always hitting a buffer limit on keystrokes before processors can actually catch up with her commands if they're not custom machines that she herself has tinkered with. The only reason she hasn't started to tinker with creating AI is that she is she is on the fence about the moral implications of creating artificial life.

INVENTION

Given enough time and resources, Meredith can create a solution to nearly any problem. Her problem is that the time side of the equation rarely favors her. However that does not discount her ability to be able to create upgrades and advances to existing technology.

LANGUAGES

With a near eidetic memory and the ability to easily assimilate new information, Tachyon is a skilled linguist. At the moment she's fluent in English, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin and Spanish. She also knows enough Mandarin to get by and a little Dutch.

CONSULTING POSITIONS

While not fulltime gigs, Tachyon does hold advisory roles with several national and multinational organizations that are involved in metahuman affairs. These organizations are the N.S.A. as well as O.N.E. and S.H.I.E.L.D. In addition to a modest retainer she also has provisional top security clearance at each organization, meaning that as soon as she needs to be brought onto a project she can be granted immediate access without having to wait for a security check. As she does not have a permanent position with any one organization she does not have a standing clearance level though.

E-R LABS

Eaken-Rubendall Research Laboratories is a state of the art research facility in New York City. The building consists of a series of underground levels with only a single story aboveground. The unassuming structure houses multiple modular labs capable of working with a wide range of materials and are able to be repurposed for specific applications. Dr. Stinson has recently become lead researcher at the facility as well as sitting on the board of directors. Unfortunately the lab is still focused on a few very big picture projects that could dramatically improve the world but none offer real economic advantages. Due to this many labs are shuttered. Several members of the board are pushing to get funding from various government agencies, but Meredith is resisting the move unless she can be assured that it will remain autonomous.

GLOVES

In addition to being designed to protect Tachyon's hands during fist fights, her gloves also incorporate an additional microcomputer. This is a complimentary device to Tachyon's HUD and keeps her in communication with teammates and her home computer. Micro sensors built in allow her to use a virtual keyboard to interact with the technology in the event of a failure of the voice recognition module.

She has built at least one additional version of the device, built into an oversized wrist band/watch. Beside the voice recognition technology, the microcomputer has an array of additional functions. These range from a high resolution camera with 3D mapping capabilities to a mini-modular sensor system that allows custom component swap out for things like air quality sensors, energy or light emission trackers.

HUD

Meredith has a custom heads up display that incorporates alien technology. The device interfaces with her office mainframe and can provide up to date information at nearly the speed of light. At the speeds she moves at though even this can feel like a painfully slow display, though it does allow her to gain necessary information using voice commands as needed. The system also provides the information as a hardlight holographic display, a feature that Meredith jokes keeps her from having to dodge every insect in her path when she's moving at Mach 8.

SUIT

Tachyon has designed and wears a nearly frictionless speed suit. The material is ultra light and extremely durable, designed to resist shredding in sand storms or under the assault of antagonistic opponents. Though it is not impervious, the suit is resistant to damage and operates as a form of low grade body armor in the rare instances when an attack lands, acting like a suit made of much thicker kevlar. The frictionless nature of the suit also helps her if she finds herself in a grapple as well. While not as compact as Flash's costume, the suit does fold down into a package small enough to fit into a purse or large pocket. While not necessary, she prefers to wear her costume when engaged in heroics.

TOWNHOUSE

Meredith resides in a small townhouse in Washington Heights, NYC. It maintains the rustic appearance of the other homes in the row but Tachyon has done some work refurbishing the interior. The home's wiring now can handle industrial level current draw from the grid and features a direct connection to the mainframe at her laboratory. Decorating influences include American Craftsman, Art Nouveau and Japanese Minimalist. The largest room in the house is the start of the art kitchen and the most ornately decorated the bathroom. Dr. Stinson's only roommates are a pair of Maine Coon cats, Nimitz and Samantha.

CAN'T DANCE

Meredith can do a waltz just fine, but her superhuman reflexes and speed cause her to almost have a nervous break down when attempting to perform anything more active than that. She simply wants to move too fast to actually keep to any beat and either becomes a blur or performs some stilted bizarre version of the robot whenever she tries. At this point she's simply given up.

FOCUSED

Every moment of Meredith's life she's known what she's wanted. Unfortunately that means that those things she didn't want simply slid under her radar. Her knowledge of movies is pitiful, she never watched cartoons as a child, she certainly doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission. Her fashion sense is atrocious, with her best efforts looking like a cross between a welder and Indiana Jones.

METABOLISM

Tachyon's super speed is intrinsically linked to her metabolism. The faster she speeds up, the faster her body burns energy. In an average day she eats at least four times as much as a person of her build normally would. When she reaches speeds beyond her 'average' she is stricken with hunger immediately. It's not uncommon for her to raid the fridge when she's busting up a bad guy secret hide out, often in between punching out bad guys. Mid fight in the streets of New York she might zip through a fast food joint for a triple patty melt with extra cheese and a jumbo fry, just leaving a twenty behind to cover her bill. She has reached points where she's moving at such a rate of speed where half of her time in speed mode is spend trying to acquire food to fuel the speed. Theoretically she could reach a point where she was moving so fast that she literally consumed her own body mass before even being able to replenish the loss. It's a recurring nightmare.

MORALITY

While not having any particular religious convictions Meredith does have a very solid moral and ethical code. She will only kill when left with absolutely no choice and even with great hesitation. (Especially for a speedster.) She tries to protect those weaker than her and help people in need. Her own choices stop her from using her powers in much more effective and brutal ways.

NEMESES

In her short career as a super hero Tachyon has thwarted terrorists, mad scientists and rampaging robots. There is no shortage of villains who wouldn't mind seeing harm done to the woman who saw no reason to hide the fact that she was Dr. Meredith Stinson. Most surprisingly though is that a recent failed intern at Eaken-Rubendall managed to break into a secure prototyping lab and steal an experimental speed suit. Tachyon had developed it to allow normal humans to reach something akin to superhuman speeds. So far no agency has been able to track down Krystal Lee and the extreme expense of the only prototype means that the project has been shelved.

OBLIGATIONS

When you're a genius you think you can do everything, when you can move at superhuman speeds you know you can do everything. Tachyon is finding out that she's not capable of doing everything. Between personally heading every project at her labs, trying to keep it afloat as a business and fielding crisis calls from various agencies she can find herself drowning. Most days she's able to keep her head above water but it yields next to no time for a life outside of work. 

At the moment she's happy with the situation, savoring the opportunity to sneak in a chance to sit down and eat or watch a play, or even just play with her cats. What this means though is that she never has time to simply do what she wants, or that if she has found the time, it may get interrupted. With zero time for a serious relationship of any sort, she'll have to work on a major life restructure if she actually wants to do anything other than work and save the world.

SPEEDSTER

Tachyon is a very fast person capable of manipulating the Speed Force to accomplish some amazing feats. That being said, she is simply a speedster. She has no special resistance to telepathy, magic or any form of super powers. Her greatest asset is that she can generally avoid being hit, if she is, it usually hits really hard (as you'd expect a hit to affect a human of her size and build.) A big reason she enjoys team ups with other heroes is that they can compliment her own abilities while also covering her weaknesses in these areas.
