Profile

Thistlewalker is a young Scottish mutant who was born not just with the ability to control and communicate with plants, but literally is part plant himself. Treated as being either cursed, or a changeling, by the more superstitious of the village people where he grew up, Thistlewalker spent most of his time deep in the old growth forests his mother, a Royal Scottish Countryside Ranger, protected. But as much as he loves the forests and their growth with all his heart, there was a part of him that wanted to experience the world beyond. To be a part of it. To protect it, even. But he didn't know how. That is, until he received a letter from Xavier's Academy for Gifted Youngsters...

Description

Thistlewalker is preternaturally tall teenaged mutant who stands a regal 7'6" in height, towering monolithically over nearly all around him like a giant shaped from Vitae Lignum, the world's hardest ironwood. His flesh shines darkly, as if he has been polished, a tattoo-like pattern of the darkest green vines and ivy seemingly etched like veins into his dermis; Even his face, which is like a carved mask conveying a sense of vitality and youth, inset with eyes solid chlorophyll green. His hair is like long green and brown vibes, varying in thickness and lencgh, interspersed with leaves and needles from varying species of plants.

His form, despite his size and odd plant-like features, is pretty much humanoid. His arms are sinuously and strong like thick branches, corded with muscles that writhe like vines beneath his polished bark-like skin. His shoulders broad and his waist trim. His legs are long and powerful. His feet, usually bare, are large and spread wider than a normal persons. Any bared limbs are are covered in those spiraling etch-tattoos.

Thistlewalker dresses in very casual, loose fitting clothes. A billowy and longsleeved pure cotton shirt, naturally dyed a Hunter green; Open at the throat and laced, like a pirates shirt, showing a defined chest that is also etched. His slacks are hempen denim, a darker earthy brown. He wears no shoes at all.

History

Thistlewalker Drus is the son of Royal Scottish Countryside Ranger Flidais Drus, her family a local one with ties to the lands and forests of the region going back dozens of generations. His father was Sergeant Ezekiel Kincaid of his Majesties S.A.S. The two met while Thistlewalker's mother was managing the Duhb Ghlase Royal Forest outside of the small village of Douglas Dale, Scotland, and his father was training Recruits on the crown lands.

Her pregnancy was problematic and the doctors couldn't figure out what the issue was. It was feared that the child would be stillborn. As it was He was born almost three months prematurely, undeveloped and oddly coloured brownish green, but clearly clinging to life. Thinking he was jaundiced, he was kept under special lamps in an incubator and given many fluids. The immature baby flourished immediately, almost as if the incubator was a greenhouse. And every plant in the hospital suddenly flourished as well. When he was removed from the incubator as an experiment, he started to wither as did the plants, so he was returned to the incubator until he was strong enough.

So it was fairly obvious he was different. Genetic testing, newly available, identified him as a mutant but his mother's family, and the village people, still retained many of the old superstitions and called him Fey-Touched. Looking at her son's differences as more of a curse than a blessing, she named her son Thistlewalker after Scotland's official flower.

Thistlewalker lived a rather protected childhood in some ways. It was obvious his mutation attuned im to the forests and he felt at home there, so that's where he was raised at his mother's side as she continued to protect the old growth. He was homeschooled, thanks to the internet, and rarely went into town since half the people feared him while the other half were almost worse in their adoration. There was very little balance between the two and while his parents wished or him to grow up to have some modicum of a normal life they knew it would never be.

So his mother, and the rest of his family, taught him the ways of the land; Physically, mentally, and Spiritually, rooting him deeply (no pun intended) in the history and beliefs of their people. He was enamored by not just the practical skills but the myths as well. His mother hoped that maybe he could follow in her footsteps one day as a warden of the forest, a post modern druid if you will. His father feared that someday the government or worse would take their son away so he trained him in how to protect himself and, if he needed to, survive on his own in the wild indefinitely.

By the time Thistlewalker was 15, his only real exposure to the outside world beyond a few visits into town or the hospital had been through the internet. He yearned to see the world beyond, to see the forests that were slowly disappearing. To meet new people. To experience more. He wanted more. And it was almost like someone was reading his mind because one day his mother and father came to him with a letter.

A Year later Thistlewalker Drus was on a plane, for the first time, with his parents heading to the US. And towards his future.

Personality

Thistlewalker is an easy going, if somewhat shy, young giant. Having not spent a lot of time around large numbers of people he is cautious when interacting with others. He sometimes comes off as lazy, or dreamy, the way he ponderously seems to move but every motion is calculated. When he isn't feeling overwhelmed, he can be quite gregarious and charming. He has a protective streak towards unwarranted destruction of nature but a strange detachedness regarding teh natural cycle of life.

Abilities

A PLANTS LIFE
Deep within Thistlewalkers chest is his 'Heartseed', the core of what he is. No matter how terribly he is injured, as long as the heartseed is undamaged and he has access to sunlight and water, he will regenerate. Even if he is burned to ashes or reduced to particulates, so long as the fist sized seed is viable and replanted a flower-like plant will regrow within a fortnight and from within Thistlewalker will emerge regrown.

CHLORO FORM
Thistlewalker is made up of plant materials in a humanoid form thus has a number of human and plant attributes chimerically spliced together. He is extremely dense, his default plant base have the toughness and durability of Vitae Lignum, a form of iron wood that is extremely resistant to wear and rot. His hair is composed of vines and leaves and pine needles. He requires both regular sunlight and water, to empower his photosynthesis, and while he can also metabolize plant and animal matter as food it is not required. He doesn't breath oxygen, but instead breaths carbon dioxide. Thistlewalker has an amount of power over his own body, just like he does with other plant life. He can alter his form, forming defensive and offensive measures such as thorns and vines. He can grow all, or parts, of his body and has prodigious regenerative abilities though if he enlarges himself he can only maintain that growth (double his size) for a short time before he returns to his current default size. He can also absorb/mimic/integrate the properties of other plants into his body so long as he has at least a source like a seed or a clipping from them. His extreme density gives him a modicum of enhanced strength, equal to lifting five to ten tons max, and is durable against many sources of kinetic, especially blunt damage. He is immune to most organic based toxins as he is able to generate them himself. Like a tree, he will continue to grow slowly, an inch a year.

CHLOROKINESIS
Thistlewalker can grow/create, shape and manipulate plants including wood, vines, moss as a whole or parts of the plants, such as leaves, seeds, fruits and flowers. He can cause plants to grow, move/attack or even rise from the soil and "walk", mutate plants by rearranging and splicing their DNA structure and revive withered or dead plants. He can use his power for defense and support by growing plants from the ground and make them sprout seeds/fruits/berries/thorns, etc. Thistlewalker can also deal a series of offensive techniques on a target. Using the plants as weapons, enabling him to grasp and strike continuously with vines and roots, project thorns at a distance, and quickly regenerate the withering weapons at will. He can make vines grow and climb around a target's neck, causing choking, or even strike with plants. A more subtle technique is to release damaging toxins.

CHLOROPATHY

Thistlewalker can communicate with all forms of plant-life, including flowers, trees, fruits, vegetables, etc.; Either telepathically or through plant pheromones is anyone's guess. He can sense the overall well-being and conditions of the immediate environment being physically, emotionally, and/or mentally in synch with plants and their immediate biome which allows him to perceive and understand not only what happens in nature but if it is in harmony with natural order. A naturally tree falling or predator catching their prey in a near by forest would be felt by the Him.

Skills

BOTANY
It is only natural (no pun intended) that Thistlewalker has an interest in plants since he is for all intents and purposes mostly plant himself. He is a knowledgeable botanist even at his young age, given his empathy with plants.

NEO-DRUIDISM
Thistlewalker is NOT magical being but because of his affinities, and a natural curiosity regarding his place in the world and his ancestors beliefs, he has become a believer in Neo-Druidry, a form of spirituality or religion that generally promotes harmony and worship of nature, and respect for all beings, including the environment. He is an adept herbalist and homeopath practitioner. He also likes crystals, because they look neat.

RANGER
Thistlewalker's Mother was a Scottish Countryside Ranger, the equivalent of a United States Federal Parks Ranger, her job to protect the few remaining old growth Royal Forests in Scotland at the behest of the crown, and he was raised by her to do much the same. His father was an SAS Sergeant, trained in wilderness survival. As such, Thistlewalker is trained in the ways of surviving in the wild. Land navigation/Orienteering, woodcraft, herbalism, tracking, trapping, hunting, fishing, and camping. He is also

TRAINED COMBATANT

While he is not comfortable with violence in and of itself, Thistlewalker's father is a member of the British SAS and as he was worried for his son's safety so he spent time teaching him to defend himself. Thistlewalker is a competent, if reluctant, hand to hand combatant. He can enhance his attacks with his abilities, such as thorn dagger and paralyzing toxins, and always can grow a cudgel if need be. But he respects life to much to outright attack anyone unless his or someone else's life depends on it.

Resources

SEED COLLECTION

Thistlewalker collects seeds, and spores, pollen and other kinds of plant reproductive matter in his satchel. He can use these seeds when no plants are available, growing and manipulating them, merging them together or with himself. The collection is pretty extensive, with samples from plants that have many varying qualities, from medicinal to structural to toxic and, in some cases, meat eating.

Weaknesses

BEWARE FIRE
Fire is both the enemy of the life giver of the forest. But for it to help spread life, it must destroy it first. Being composed of a wood-like substance, Thistlewalker is of course susceptible to fire, though it varies in degrees (no pun intended) When properly hydrated he can actually withstand fire for a duration, like green wood; The charring actually hardening his already tough exterior like armour. But continued exposure to fire will dehydrate him quickly and when he is dry enough he will burn like cordwood.

DEHYDRATION
If Thistlewaker goes for prolonged periods without water, his vines will start to wither and the wood-like substance of his body will start to dry out and become brittle.

ECOLOGICAL SENSITIVITY
While his hybrid nature makes his much more robust than any human or plant on their own, his abilities still make him extremely sensitive to the environment around him to which he is synched. He is physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually in synch with environment and the state of said environment can effect him. A thriving biome makes him happy and healthy. A forest undergoing drought makes him feel thirsty and shaky. A poisoned grove makes him feel ill and angry. His emotions also cycle with the seasons. In Spring he is full of vigour and growth, giddy with new found energy. In summer he is vital and at his best. In autumn he tends to slow down a bit, like he has just crested, happy still but introspective and sometimes a bit wistful. In winter he is lethargic and depressed somewhat, moody.

HEARTSEED
Deep within Thistlewalker is a fist-sized nut-like seed. This seed is the core of his being and if it is destroyed, he will immediately die.

NOT QUITE HUMAN
Thistlewalker will never be able to hide among humanity as his mutation is extremely visible. Also, he grows roughly an inch taller every year, and if he isn't outright killed and tends to his plant body's needs will probably live forever, meaning he will probably outlive everyone he knows.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis should be a blessing. Thistlewalker can literally, if need be, live almost entirely off water and sunlight (though the nutrients on food don't hurt at all). It also means he doesn't need to breath oxygen, instead metabolizing carbon dioxide instead and /producing/ oxygen. But photosynthesis also means he /requires/ sunlight. He can go without for two days before he starts to begin fatiguing easily. After four days he starts losing his colour and weakening at a progressive rate. Actual food can sustain him somewhat but it is only prolong the inevitable and after two weeks he will fall into a form of hibernation and, possibly die.
