Are magic and science like oil and water
Date of Scene: 15 November 2019
Location: R and D Labs, The Triskelion
Synopsis: May takes Winifred on a tour of R&D while waiting for paperwork. Jemma is welcoming and Fred goes a bit mad scientist, but thankfully only hypothetically.
Cast of Characters: Melinda May, Winifred Burkle, Jemma Simmons

Melinda May has posed:
May had received a message from Winifred Burkle, a young woman she'd met through another WAND consultant a little while back, asking to speak with her. It was a bit out of left field, but considering the young woman had been very helpful, she sees no harm in speaking with her.

The discussion turns into a tour of the R&D division, of course only the areas that not classified beyond a particular security level. Not that that would stop May, honestly, but there is such a thing as propriety.

Stepping into one of the labs, May gestures as she speaks. "This is our primary biochemistry lab." Of course she picked the one lab that Jemma was currently working in to do this. Because May.

Winifred Burkle has posed:
Fred looks around...somewhere between southern girl in awe of all the fun toys down here, and scientist with an urge to tinker with and improve all the gadgets and toys being worked upon. There's so many THINGS down here...but sadly, clearance is a thing, and poor Fred has not been given clearance to examine, much less play with, all the fun toys down here. Even if her long term goal is actually to improve the fun toys down here.

"Ooooh, Biochem. What does this do, what does that do, and what're you trying to do?" Fred actually looks like she wants to jump in hands first and start playing with things to come up with new combinations.

Jemma Simmons has posed:
Of course Jemma Simmons is working. There is really only three places Jemma is only seen, if ever....and it is wildly most likely that the labs is the best bet. The video monitors have some schematics up of some superconducting carbon mesh...and a deployment method for what appears to be some sort of fast acting sedative...and two or three more ideas that look to be in varying stages of completion. The scientist appears to be rather involved in her work...

Until she hears a voice that she does not immediately recognize. She turns around, about to state not to play, when she sees both the visitor Winifred and May playing escort. The admonishment dies in Jemma's throat, as she switches to her pleasant British demeanor. "Oh! Hello! I didn't realize we had guests here...."

Melinda May has posed:
"Just a quick tour," May explains, then offers brief introductions. "Ms. Burkle has applied to join SHIELD's R&D, so I thought this might be a good place to start." She steps into the lab fully but out of the way of anything Jemma might be working on, folding her hands in front of herself casually to give the young woman a few minutes to geek out. Not too long, though, the tour's only meant to last fifteen minutes or so while the recruitment paperwork is being processed by HR.

Winifred Burkle has posed:
Fred was hoping there'd be answers on the chemicals and such, but alas, no such luck. Oh well. She'd have to wait for paperwork like everybody else. And probably fill out 10 forms in triplicate or some such thing. But yes, the geeking is commencing. Upon catching some notes out of the corner of her eye, and some other chemicals bubbling merrily away, she gets an idea.

"Try putting that with that, add some of that, and heat it to about 473 Kelvin." She could've just said the boiling point of water, or 100 degrees celsius, but no no no. It's Kelvin down here, certainly! As for the results...well, it could be a discovery, an explosion, or any number of things!

Jemma Simmons has posed:
"Well, you certainly picked the right place to start." Jemma flashes a smile as she waves to Winifred. "A pleasure to meet you. I am Jemma Simmons." She doesn't add the Doctor appellation, nor agent. Just Jemma. She turns to May, explaining gently. "I was developing some other uses for the carbon mesh superconductor we build as part of Agent Barnes' camoflague for his arm. As well, was seeing about expanding the dendrotoxin we use in the ICERS to see if we can generate an area of effect...essentially make a knockout grenade. Among other things."

But...then there is a pause, as Jemma turns and just...stares...at Winifred. Her eyes follow to the chemicals the newcomer is pointing to, then shakes her head. "you realize that mixing those two together and heating it to the boiling point of water will initiate a chain reaction that will fill the laboratory with noxious fumes, yes? I would advise against that." Then...as an afterthought, Jemma adds a word.

    "Highly."

Melinda May has posed:
May raises an eyebrow at Winifred's abrupt suggestion, and then again at Jemma's reaction to it. "All experiments conducted here have to follow a very strict set of procedures and protocols for the safety of everyone in the area," she tells Fred, knowing it's something Simmons has likely heard countless times.

"But, if you're going to be working here, Ms. Burkle, these are all things you'll be learning before you so much as set foot in these labs again."

Winifred Burkle has posed:
Fred merely nods at the noxious fumes. "Yeah, it would. But the resulting gas is very hard to heat or cool. If you needed a cooling system, it just might be useful for something." Fred merely gives the cutest southern smile you ever did see, and goes back to May.

"Oh, right. Yeah, there's a lot of procedures and things. No worries! I'll make all sorts of things."

Melinda May has posed:
May tilts her head slightly, then touches one hand to her ear. "Acknowledged." She looks at Fred. "Your recruitment paperwork is ready. Shall we head back that way?" She nods her thanks to Jemma for allowing them to invade for a few minutes, then gestures toward the door.

Becoming official SHIELD is just down the hall.

Winifred Burkle has posed:
After her crazy suggestion about a temperature resistant gas, she cheerfully goes off to do more paperwork in a day than poor Fred has likely seen in her entire life. She's a pretty good scientist, but she was also working for Angel before, and the vampire wasn't exactly above board about these things. This is actually above board, with pay checks to match a government agency.

In short, it's all very new.
