"Ha! The movies are just a comforting fairytale compared to the real deal. Bram Stoker, he wrote a good yarn. But the events that he described back in 1897, God, that was just a tiny piece of the mosaic."

Profile

Hannibal King was an American private investigator living in London until a vampire named Deacon Frost killed, and turned him into a vampire. When he awoke, he was disgusted and horrified by what he had become. Vowing never to feed on a living human being, he initially purchased human blood from blood banks, pig's blood from butchers, and in emergency situations, would feed on recently deceased, but never a living being. Since then, he has become a founding partner in BorderLine Investigative Services, a vampire hunting group known as the Nightstalkers, and joined the Order of the Children of the Midnight Sun.

Description:

Hannibal King is above average in height, with an incredibly athletic build. He's not a body builder, but he is definitely an athlete. Depending on his clothing, you can see the definition in his arms, in his shoulders, in his chest, in his neck, and in his legs. Whenever there is exposed skin, there is exposed muscle. Almost a century of a strong diet combined with exercise, and not aging, will do that to a person.

He is on the pale side, but not unhealthily so. His hair is light brown, medium length, sometimes spiked up with product, while other times he slicks it back or blow dries it. He has been known to grow facial hair, such a beard or goatee, while other times he shaves it smooth against his skin. He is handsome, with hazel eyes, and a symmetrical facial structure. He perpetually looks to be thirty-two years old.

He often wears a black bulletproof vest at night, with a mixture of athletic and combat gear supporting it. During the day, or when the vest is impractical, he favors black trousers, a white shirt, and a jacket, sometimes a coat.

History

History 1:
Hannibal King was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 23rd, 1916. He went to the University of Wisconsin, earning a degree in psychology, before moving on to became a skilled private investigator, eventually immigrating to the United Kingdom, where he settled in London, England. While working an industrial espionage case, he was attacked, bitten, and turned by Deacon Frost. When he awoke, he was disgusted and horrified by what he had become. Vowing never to feed on a living human being, he initially purchased human blood from blood banks, pig's blood from butchers, and in emergency situations, would feed on recently deceased, but never a living being.

He eschewed his vampiric abilities, choosing instead to live as a regular human who simply happened to be a vampire. He did not know this at the time, but Deacon Frost was not a regular vampire. In 1863, Frost had been experimenting with vampire blood in an effort to find the key to immortality. After accidentally injecting himself with a vial of blood that had been taken from a vampire, Frost became a vampire, however, he did not die, nor did he lose his soul in the process. Due to the unusual method of his becoming a vampire, Frost was in fact a neo-vampire, and when he bit King, he became a neo-vampire too.

Continuing to operate out of his London office, a woman named Adrianne Brown Walters hired him to look into the circumstances of the death of her new newlywed husband, Fred Walters. She described the attack in detail, and King instantly recognized it as the actions of a vampire. Heading to the Lucky Inn to ask questions, the bartender took him into the back room, where he attacked King. Easily beating the man, King deduced that the man was in service to a vampire.

King encountered Dracula while investigating Walters' employers, Wyandanch Limited. Dracula attacked, King fired a bullet that passed straight the Dark Prince and struck one of Dracula's servants, before Dracula pushed King out of a second-storey window. By the time King got up and came back inside, Dracula was gone.

Interrogating the dying servant, King learned that Dracula was shipping wooden coffin filled with dirt. Following the lead to a warehouse, he encountered Dracula for a second time, fighting off several vampires, but Dracula escaped again. The trail gone cold, King met with Mrs. Walters and explained everything that he had learned.

While searching for Deacon Frost, the vampire that bit him, King met Blade. At first they fought, with King easily defeating Blade, but later, they became mutual allies, as Frost was the one who had killed Blade's mother. They decided to work together. They crashed a party held by Dracula, with Frost among the crowd. Blade managed to stab Dracula in the back, but missed his heart. The Dark Prince mocked their efforts before escaping into the night.

Later, Blade, King, and Frank Drake, a distant descendant of Vlad III, Dracula's mortal self, formed BorderLine Investigation Services, a private detective agency dedicated to hunting vampires and investigating the occult. To the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness, they are known as the Nightstalkers.

Along with several other heroes with a taste of damnation, the Nightstalkers formed the Midnight Sons, a group dedicated to preserving the boundaries between our world, and the dark realms. Although a loose alliance, each member agreed to have a brand seared into their arm, which becomes visible when ritually summoned, and hurts like the Devil himself until the summons is answered. The brand otherwise remains invisible until it is needed.

History 2:

Continued from +gen Hannibal King/History 1.

Many years later, while working out of Metropolis, CIA agent Tatjana Stiles hired King to investigate a man named Navarro, who was suspected of having stolen biological weapons. King and Stiles were captured by Navarro, who was himself a vampire. Navarro took a sadistic interest in King. Navarro gave King the choice of killing a man, or Navarro would turn the man into a vampire, and the man would kill Stiles.

King fed on the man, he killed him. It was the first time he had ever fed on a living human being. Eventually, King and Stiles managed to destroy Navarro, but not before Stiles was horribly injured. King took her to the hospital, but there was nothing they could do. She begged him to turn her. And in a moment of love and weakness, it became the second time he killed a human, the first time he converted one, and the reason for his eternal damnation.

Personality

Personality:

King is a hard-boiled gumshoe, exceptionally tough, grim, and determined. He has a severe angst problem that he chooses to deal with through his effusive and mouthy humor. He talks a lot. Sometimes it's vulgar, the rest of the time it's just un-useful to all but him. It's a defensive mechanism. He's seeking sympathy, but in the worst way possible.

He deeply resents his vampiric nature, bordering on a pathological hatred. He can work with others like him, however rare they may be. And he is driven by an indomitable iron will. He does not back down. He does not slink away, he does not give in. He's not dumb enough to get himself killed. A tactical retreat is a choice. But you will not beat Hannibal King. Not in the long run. You may win a battle, you may win many battles, but the war is only ever going to win one way, with him watching the vampires turn to dust.

Abilities

Accelerated Healing:
King, as a vampire, providing that he is well fed and the damage is not a product of vampiric weakness, will begin to heal almost any wound within moments. He cannot regenerate missing internal organs, however, that isn't usually a problem as besides the heart, mind, and voice box, he doesn't really need them. While it has never happened to him, he cannot regenerate lost limbs, but can reattach them. Depending on the severity of a wound, healing can take a substantial amount of time. The important thing is that under the right circumstances, he will heal and retain the vitality of youth, indefinitely. Despite possessing these abilities, King chooses to live as close to an ordinary life as he can.

Breathing:
King, as a vampire, does not require oxygen to breathe. He can exist in space, under water, or buried in the Earth, without undue physical stress. He can survive atmospheres that would be poisonous to a regular human. He cannot be strangled. However, vampires do maintain a breathing reflex, which allows them to speak, smoke, and have a gag reflex. Because King refuses many of his vampiric abilities, he is susceptible to the anxiety from being choked, rather than the lack of oxygen.

Neo-Vampire:
King was sired in 1948 by Deacon Frost, becoming a vampire. However, Deacon Frost did not become a vampire through ordinary means. For convenience sake, King is consistently referred to as a vampire elsewhere, except where noted.

Superhuman Durability:
King, as a vampire, is essentially invulnerable to bodily harm, including the effects of disease, and the natural cellular mitosis that comes with aging. He is not a living creature. Excessive force will cause physical damage to him, but his body will regenerate damaged tissue providing it can supplement itself with regular supplies of blood.

Superhuman Senses:
King, as a vampire, can hear as well as a bat, smell as well as a wolf, and see as well as a cat. He also has an innate sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, which allows him to see in ultraviolet frequencies.

Superhuman Speed:
King, as a vampire, has superhuman agility, hand-eye coordination, reaction time, reflexes, and speed. It is many times greater than that of a normal human being. King prefers to avoid the use of most of his vampiric abilities. This is not the case with his reflexes. It is the lone exception that he has actively trained with and honed, as it is integral to many of his skills and chosen fighting style.

Superhuman Strength:
King, as a vampire, is able to perform superhuman feats such as leaping great distances, withstand severe physical exertion with no ill effects, and able to lift many times what he could prior to becoming one. Vampires become stronger as they age. However, King has avoided using his strength, and thus, as he approaches vampiric middle age, he can only lift about 3 tons.

Vampire Face:
King, as a vampire, possesses adapted musculature around his canine teeth, eyes, and forehead that can extend and distort, becoming fangs, changing his eye color, and giving him a demonic face. He can also extend his fingernails to claw-like proportions. King chooses to avoid his vampiric face as much as possible.

Vampiric Weaknesses:

King, as a neo-vampire, has greater resistance to sunlight than normal vampires, and his need for blood is greatly diminished. King can walk about in daylight for short periods, such as walking from a car to a building. If he spends more than a few minutes in the sun, he will be incinerated. King subsists on a diet that includes pig's blood, but it is only a part of it. The rest is contemporary American cuisine.

Skills

Detective:
King is a highly skilled detective, blessed with keen observational skills, able to conduct forensic investigations, and his inductive and deductive reasoning is of the highest caliber. He is a partner and the lead private investigator for BorderLine Investigative Services.

Hand-To-Hand Combatant:
King is an expert martial artist, adopting a hybrid style, with a focus on unarmed combat. He can use chokeholds, disarm, grapple, joint lock, kick, pin, punch, strike, throw, and submission hold his opponents. He can fight with a sword, but he is more experienced at fighting with ranged weaponry, or unarmed.

Indomitable Will:
King is a very strong-willed person. He has managed to overcome the bloodlust that affects all vampires. He refuses to use most of his vampiric abilities in his day to day life, and has only ever fed on one living person, Tatajana Stiles, who lay dying in hospital, and begged him to turn her, an act he has regretted ever since.

Interrogator:
King has extensive experience, knowledge, and training in interrogation techniques, both using them, and in resisting them.

Marksman:
King is an expert marksman who makes regular use of a variety of firearms. He is also an expert with throwing knives. He learned long ago that if he can kill his opponent before they can reach him, it's a lot cleaner. Although he is capable of acting as a sniper, he is far more experienced at firing under duress in relatively close combat.

Occultist:
King is a vampire detective. He has spent decades immersing himself in the occult, and though not a practitioner, he is familiar with it, and has amassed a great wealth of experience in the field.

Psychologist:
King holds a Masters of Psychology from the University of Wisconsin. He is a student of human behavior, and originally intended to become a psychologist, but he abandoned his studies in favor of applying his skills in a more practical field, such a private investigations. It was more lucrative too, and he got to set his own hours.

Stealth:
King knows how to blend in, whether it is at the mall, an office building, or sporting event. He has mastered being able to hide in plain sight. This does not always work against those who know his face and are actively searching for him, but it helps a lot. He is also good at moving quietly, making use of his vampiric agility, coordination, and reflexes to move about silently.

Thief:

King, as a private investigator has, been bypassing security systems all his adult life. As the security systems keeping him out have improved, so too has his skill and sophistication in bypassing them.

Resources

254 Stone Hill Road:
King lives in an old-school Colonial that was built in 1860. It's 8,892 square feet, including the guest house, with 7 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and all situated on 11.65 acres. He spends most of his time in Blüdhaven, so it's a bit of a commute to Westchester County, but it's nice to have a place to hang his hat.

Bulletproof Vest:
King habitually wears a black bulletproof vest when hunting. It can absorb the impact of, and reduce or stop, penetration to the torso from projectiles, and fragmentation from explosions. Of special note, it can absorb the impact of a "Sun Dog" fired from his own electronic pistols, so long as they hit him in the vest. If it hit him in the face, arms, or legs, the vest would do nothing.

Dodge Charger:
King drives a black 1970 Dodge Charger R-T fitted with necro-tempered glass, which helps keep those uplifting wholesome rays from charbroiling him. And they're 30% more energy efficient.

Electronic Pistols:
King's signature weapon is a pair of electronic pistols that fire "Sun Dogs", which are explosive rounds that emit a short burst of ultraviolet light that can dust a vampire on contact. The range of the burst is small enough that they are not harmful to vampires adjacent to the victim. It is strictly one Sun Dog per vampire. A miniature camera can be mounted next to the barrel, which is specially designed to be able to record footage of vampires. The recording disc is housed in the rear of the slide assembly. These pistols cannot fire other types of ammunition.

Honeycomb Hideout:
The Nightstalkers are based out of the Honeycomb Hideout, a 187-foot-long barge docked in Fort Joseph, Blüdhaven. It has an armory, basketball court, computer room, den, engine room, game room, laboratory, library, infirmary, meeting room, reliquary, training room, and crew quarters.

Midnight Sons:
The Order of the Children of the Midnight Sun, or Midnight Sons for short, are a loose alliance of heroes, with a taste of damnation that they draw upon in order to fight it, or who are compelled to fight against it, to prevent the same from happening to others. Members of the Midnight Sons are given a brand by the Sorcerer Supreme, which is seared into their arm, becoming visible when ritually summoned, and hurts like the Devil himself until the summons is answered. Some of those who bear the brand have learned to perform the ritual, but most can't. The brand otherwise remains invisible until it is needed. The Midnight Sons have no formal base of operations, but have used the Honeycomb Hideout and Sanctum Sanctorum in the past.

Nightstalkers:
By day, and to the outside world, the Nightstalkers are known as BorderLine Investigative Services, a private detective agency. King is a full partner in the venture, and their lead detective. To the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness, they are known as the Nightstalkers, a group professional vampire hunters, and occult investigators. They are based out of the Honeycomb Hideout, a 187-foot-long barge docked in Fort Joseph, Blüdhaven.

Wealth:
King, as a vampire, is effectively immortal. Early on, he began planning for it, making great use of financial investments and compound interest. When he has come into large sums of money, rather than squander it on temporary pleasures, he has invested it, as immortality gives new meaning to the term long term planning.

Winchester Model 1887:

King has a heavily modified Winchester Model 1887 lever-action shotgun. It can fire multiple types of ammunition, including grenades, stakes (silvered or wooden), ultraviolet-explosive rounds, as well as regular shotgun shells.

Weaknesses

Allium Intolerance:
Vampires are allium intolerant. They are unable to eat anything from the allium family, such as onions, garlic, chives, leeks, and scallions. Alliums will not kill a vampire in and of itself, but when ingested, may cause sickness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, and or tiredness. Most vampires have been conditioned through experience to associate the scent of alliums, especially garlic, with these symptoms. Paradoxically, some vampires have developed a fondness for the taste of alliums, despite the symptoms they experience afterwards.

King, as a neo-vampire, has a mild case of allium intolerance, and regularly ingests them as part of his diet.

Blood Consumption:
Vampires must consume blood on a regular basis in order to regulate their bodily functions. Failing to do so will cause a vampire to weaken in a manner similar to a human lacking basic nutrition. The difference is that a human will perish relatively quickly. Vampires are known to have survived for years without feeding. A vampire so affected will waste away, becoming little more than a bag of bones.

Tainted blood, whether by disease, radiation, or drug use, is no more appealing to a vampire than spoiled food is to a human. Most will refuse to eat it unless circumstances leave them little choice. A vampire may become sick from drinking tainted blood. While human blood is by far the preferred source, pigs blood is considered a valid substitute. Some vampires like to add food items to their blood for texture and taste.

King, as a neo-vampire, is less dependent on blood than a regular vampire. The craving is diminished, and he can supplement his diet with regular food.

Dark Secret:
King makes every effort to conceal the fact that he is a vampire. He chooses to live as much as possible as a human being, eschewing his vampiric abilities, and making physical and social adjustments to perpetuate the belief that he is a regular human.

Decapitation:
It is possible to kill a vampire through decapitation. Unlike staking, where the vampire immediately turns to ashes, a decapitated vampire may be saved through outside intervention. Were the head to be held to the neck, it will eventually reattach. Without that, it will eventually turn to dust. How long it takes is dependent on a number of factors, including the age, willpower, and overall health of the vampire prior to decapitation.

Fire:
Vampires, like nearly every other immortal and undead being, abhor fire. Vampiric tissue and ichor is extremely flammable, and even if they don't burn to ash, it takes a long time to fully heal, and even then, not without some scarring. This is because fire, both physically and metaphysically, is an elemental cleansing force, and is anathema to their curse.

Food:
King, as a neo-vampires is not only able to ingest and digest normal food and drink, but he can supplement his diet with their nutritional value. He still requires blood to live, but he is less dependent upon it than regular vampires.

Guilt:
King has consumed the blood of a living human being exactly twice. The first time was while captured and to prevent a human from being turned into a vampire. The second was Tatjana Stiles, who lay dying in hospital. She begged him to turn her into a vampire. He did so in a moment of love and weakness. It was the second time he killed a human, the first time he converted one, and the reason for his eternal damnation.

Holy Items:
It doesn't matter if the vampire itself believes or not. Vampirism is a diabolic curse and all infected by the curse are repulsed by the sight of a holy symbol, either it be wielded by someone with faith in what the symbol they hold represents, or the symbol itself has been blessed by someone ordained of that faith (or imbued with holiness by someone with mystical abilities). The touch of a faith powered holy symbol causes the vampire extreme agony and will start to burn them, a wound that heals only as fast as a human would normally heal a similar burn. The severity of the repulsion, pain, and agony is in direct correlation by the holder or imbuers level of faith.

Holy Water:
Rarer than Holy Symbols, since fewer religions practice the blessing of water as intrinsically as their symbols, the physical effects on a vampire are still much the same.

Invitations:
Vampires have a magical aversion to entering any human dwelling, unless they have been previously invited by a current permanent resident. The vampire need not know that the person is a permanent resident, nor that it is a dwelling. Were someone to become homeless and forced to live in their car, a vampire would not be able to get into the car, even if it were unlocked, without first being invited by the owner, or leasee. Once invited, they may enter at any time thereafter. There means of magically rescinding an invitation.

Reflections:
Vampires do not cast reflections, and their images cannot usually be captured on film, or other recording devices. The magic involved prevents their clothing and belongings from being captured as well. There are ways around it, such as the camera that King sometimes attaches to his electronic pistols, or the fake identification he carries.

Silver:
Silver is probably the most toxic material to vampires. Its mere touch causes burning, similar to that of a holy symbol. A silver blade, stake, or bullet will not only pierce a vampires skin more easily than any other material, but if it pierces the heart, it will cause a vampire to burn up from the inside out, leaving nothing but ash.

Sunlight:
Sunlight (and ultraviolet light) burns a vampire from the outside inwards, and if they don't find cover within a few moments they will burn to ash. Most vampires have enough sense to avoid the sun, while a select few treat it as a mere inconvenience. As a neo-vampire, King is able to endure sunlight for minutes rather than moments, but he too will incinerate, it just takes a bit longer.

Vampiric Refusal:
Originally, King refused to use his vampiric abilities. Over time, he has grudgingly made use of some of them, but he has not honed or developed them as much as his age would suggest. This has made these abilities underdeveloped. He lacks experience in using them and it is still his preference to avoid their use. He does not act, think, or 'live' like vampire. He is a man who happens to have access to vampiric abilities.

Wood:

If the heart of the vampire is pierced with a wooden object, the vampire will immediately turn to ash. It does not matter what form the wood takes, be it a wooden arrowhead, wooden chopsticks, or a wooden stake, just so long as it is wood and pierces the heart. A puncture other than the heart, or by a material other than wood and silver, will cause great pain, but not kill, the vampire.
