Profile

Lt. Colonel Albert "Al" Simmons is a man paying dearly for his mistakes. Former marine and former CIA, Al was betrayed by the organization he worked for and murdered by a man he thought was his best friend. The misery didn't stop for him there, though, because a life of murder caught up with him, and sent him directly down to Hell. When he was there, he cut a deal with the demon Malebolgia. Now he's back on earth, now a monster as much of a man.

Is he going to honor the deal, he cut with the forces of Hell? Will he become Malebolgia's champion, his Antichrist superstar? Or is there a chance for redemption for the Hellspawn? Only time...will tell.

Description
A long, tall vaguely humanoid shape of Hellfire and malevolence, all wrapped up in a shifting red cape that seems to have no end. The way it moves and unfurls, it's like it has a mind of its own. The long collar is very Dracula-esque, but the feeling this thing gives off is something else entirely.

Besides the cape, the man is dressed in a striking uniform: Mostly black, with dashes of white and red, along with spikes covering . There is a mask covering his face, black but with white markings around the eyes, giving the impression of aggression and violence. The eyes staring out from that black and white mask are green, a creepy glowing green that's even visible in pitch darkness. The mask looks like it is completely connected to a bodysuit that continues the same pattern: Mostly black, but with white lines and markings, hugging the figure's body to show an impressive amount of musculature. Actually the suit and mask are both interesting in that they have the toughness of rough leather, but it flexes and moves like spandex, and seems to 'shift' just like the cape does.

Across that costume are various spikes, and hanging from the cape and the body are chains that dangle and sway in the breeze. Across the man's left wrist is a red leather-ish wrist gauntlet, with more spikes protruding. The thing he wears around his right hand is more extreme, however: It is a big, fat gauntlet that almost seems to extend from his elbow all the way down to the back of his hand. More spikes, of course, this one looking like it would pack more of a punch than even the left.

This pattern continues all the way down, with the legs being mostly the same black costume material, down to 'boots' that seem to have no tread and seem to leave no print. Around his left ankle is a similar red covering, complete with spikes. Around the right is a big monstrosity of a boot, something that perhaps looks a bit protective in nature. Around the creature's left thigh is something that perhaps looks a bit out of place, a brown leather belt of pouches, along with the chains and spikes this serves to prove how 'extreme' he really is.

History

History
When Al was a boy, his father sat him down and told him about Henry Simmons, a brave soldier and American patriot, who got his legs blown off overseas. When he heard that story, Albert knew that he didn't want to be anything else but a soldier, and a patriot, and a hero.

Years later, it seemed he got his wish. From school straight to the marine corps, Albert Francis Simmons was a model soldier. Big as a house, stronger than an ox, Al made it to Lt. Colonel in no time. He came back home after a few successful tours, met the love of his life, Wanda, and saved a former vice president, taking a bullet in the process.

This got him noticed by the higher ups, and he transferred to the CIA in short order. Here his gifts were put to different use. Wiretaps, wet work, Al was sent all over the world, to make sure that Uncle Sam's checks didn't become balances later. This bothered him, and the higher ups noticed. His severance package came in the form of being betrayed, gunned down and set on fire by his former friend, Chapel.

The story would end there for most people, but Al had a different destiny. All that red he'd put in his ledger came back to haunt him in the end, earning him an express ticket straight to Hell. He still doesn't remember much beyond fire, and pain, and screaming. But apparently he made a deal, because now he's awake, back on earth. He's had time to remember who he was, but he's still coming to terms with who he is now. The love of his life, Wanda, has remarried, still thinking him dead. And he doesn't dare go back to her with what he's become. Instead he clings to the shadows, to defy the future that Hell's set for him.

In the meantime, every night he burns. And every night he calls her name.

Personality

Personality
Al Simmons is not a man who suffers fools. A graduate from West Point and a product of the Marine corps, Lt. Simmons was already hardened to the horrors of war before his little trip down south. Ever since his return from Hell, much of his personality hasn't changed. Caustic and sarcastic, quick with a comeback or a scathing insult. The recent changes he's gone through have left him a bit rougher around the edges in this regard, less willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, but it might be possible to catch him on a good day. In theory.

Whether Al or Spawn, his approach to problem solving is rather...direct, and his training, history and newfound abilities means that his methods can be more than questionable sometimes. But when he acts, it is out of a desire to help those immediately around him. A result of extreme frustration and despair at his current situation, combined with this newfound incredible power that he's suddenly been given, means that he can play out the power fantasies he's always had of violently stopping bullies and those who terrorize the helpless. That was something he could never abide by, and now he never has to.

Abilities

Hellspawn
Al's soul and consciousness is more or less the same, but this isn't technically his physical body. No, this is an approximation designed by Malebolgia to resemble his charred, rotting form still in its grave.

This means that Al's new body is capable of incredible physicality. His strength, his speed, his endurance and his reaction time, they're all greatly enhanced, though the extent of this enhancement depends on how much power he's been using. If he hasn't been using the suit, the cape or the powers at all, then he might be strong enough to flip a bus, might be tough enough to be hit by a speeding car without being very injured, things like this. All very impressive.

On the flipside, the more he taps into these abilities, the less physically capable he might be. If his power is all nearly used up, then he's no stronger or tougher than a regular man, perhaps a bit less so, given his corpselike nature. It's all a high wire act.

Minor Miracles
Using the Necroplasma within him, Al can do a number of interesting things. He can 'upload' his thoughts into other people's minds, or he can talk to them directly via telepathy.

If he expends a great deal of energy he can also heal grievous and life-threatening injuries, though this is more like an EMT or a combat medic stabilizing a patient. As it stands right now any finer medical work is beyond him, and using necroplasma to treat human tissue might have side effects down the road.

Necroplasma
Necroplasma, a substance from Hell, is what's flowing through the Hellspawn's veins. Real nasty stuff, glowing green and tends to directly defy scientific analysis. It's hot enough to melt bone, it's cold enough to turn water to ice, it never fades or dries or fizzles except for cases where it does.

Spawn can use this material on a whim. He can shoot necroplasma blasts that can reduce a bank vault door to a pile of goop, rather quickly.

Necroplasma has other uses that Al has yet to understand. He may learn in the future, but for now, he uses it as a tool of absolute destruction.

It should go without saying, that using it this way drains quite a bit of Spawn's power, so he tends to use these things sparingly.

Regeneration
Spawn will gradually heal and recover from nearly any injury, from gunshots to stab wounds to other forms of horrible grievous damage. If he needs to heal faster, he can utilize the Necroplasma in his body in order to recover almost instantaneously, but of course this costs power that he might not want to use all the time. Checks and balances.

Shapeshifting
When consciously manipulating the powers he's been gifted with, Al can make himself look and sound like nearly anyone else. He needs to concentrate on maintaining the act, as it's him actually using his cape instead of some sort of illusion magic. The benefit of this is that things that "see through illusions" won't automatically see through this charade. Although, they'll definitely feel that something isn't natural, here.

Teleportation
This something Spawn can do with benefit of his cape. If either he or it concentrates, he can re-materialize somewhere else...though it seems that 'somewhere else' needs to be Rat Alley for it to work.

It also uses almost all the energy Spawn has, so if he ever does this, he's next to powerless at least a night and a half. This might change in the future, but for now, not so much.

Undead

Al is no longer among the living. This carries a few advantages. He doesn't feel pain as readily as a living breathing organism might. He doesn't breathe, which means poison gas or the fear of drowning don't really mean anything for him. He doesn't have to worry much about 'stamina' or the like, which means he can keep running, or moving, or lifting or fighting, almost indefinitely.

Skills

Basic Computers
Al isn't any kind of master hacker, but he knows the basic ins and outs of computer use, and understands how to operate things like security systems, or similar sorts of technology.

Basic Driving
Al isn't going to do any trick driving any time soon, but he's driven cars, trucks and motorcycles before. He knows how to quietly tail someone, and might theoretically know how to chase. That had never come up before in his career, but now that he's officially a costumed sort, you never know what might happen.

Guitar Playing
Al grew up walking a different path than others, and grew up loving metal and rock'n'roll. Because of this he picked up the guitar in high school, and had gotten quite good at it by the time he was working for the CIA. He hasn't practiced since the incident, but once you've learned it's as easy as falling off a bike.

Highly Trained
Before Al went to Hell, he was a Lt. Colonel in the marines, and then a member of the CIA. It's safe to say that Uncle Sam managed to turn the angry young man into a killing machine, and the man beneath the monster has recalled and remembered all of that incredible training. He can kill a man with his bare hands if need be, and he's highly trained with almost all forms of conventional firearms, including heavy weapons, sniper rifles and others.(He can still disassemble and re-assemble an M16 rifle with his eyes closed)

He knows how to move quietly while making no noise, and understands military strategy. When he was living he was a tremendous athlete, and now that he doesn't actually need to breathe or slow down and rest, he's even better at leaping, climbing, marching and other such things.

Resources

Arsenal
A short time after coming back, Spawn raided the weapons locker of the local CIA chapter. He was able to get a few assault rifles, a few SMGs, numerous pistols, a few drums of various sorts of ammunition and even a rocket launcher with one whole rocket. These are useful in that he can use them without draining his powers. He also has been able to get rubber ammunition for all of these weapons. Used less frequently, but you never know when you might need to team up with one of those strict no-killing sorts.

Rat Alley
This is a little slice of hobo horror that can be found in the dark, forgotten alleyways of Bludhaven. The people there have more or less accepted Al as a permanent fixture, and he himself is drawn there for reasons he cannot explain or understand. If he is wandering without a destination in mind, he will find himself here. If he is in danger that he cannot deal with, he will subconsciously try to travel here, whether by teleportation or more mundane methods. This is where he comes, if he needs peace and quiet, or if he needs a place to put himself back together(sometimes literally).

Additionally, something about this particular alley can 'recharge' the Necroplasma that Spawn expends. He can use his gifts more freely here, and is even stronger than he normally would be elsewhere. It is true that the damned often find their way to Hell, eventually.

The Cape
Spawn's cape is like a living entity all on its own. Functionally it almost behaves like the chains, but it can actually make decisions on its own. If Spawn is in danger and unable to act, for example, it might take the form of a shield or armor, or it might attempt to teleport Spawn to safety.

In terms of what it can do? Nearly anything, limited only by Al's imagination and how much power he has at his disposal, at any given moment. It can take the form of weapons, it can wrap around Spawn and become armor, it might cloak Spawn from detection. It should be noted, however, that most of the time it either won't act, or it will act on its owner's behest. So it's not constant protection from all possible danger, it just has options it can use during extreme situations.

Additionally, it just looks...smashing.

The Chains
The numerous chains that hang from Spawn's cape and costume are almost like extra limbs, in that Al has complete unconscious control over them. He can use them to climb buildings, he can use them to grab things and people, he can use them essentially like prehensile lassos, and they are as strong as he is at any given moment. What's more, the very ends of them are razor-sharp, and can do a lot of damage if need be.

The Suit

Created from Necroplasm, this protective armor feels like leather, but moves like oil on the water. It's tough and rugged, tough enough to provide limited armor and protection against things like gunshots and other harmful things. It's yet another lair between Al and danger, which means it's a good thing for him to have.

Weaknesses

Beheading
Though Al benefits from general 'immortality' and the typical perks that come from undead life, he will absolutely die if beheaded. So generally, it's something he tries to avoid.

Counter
Spawn is a creature of incredible and versatile power. Handpicked to be a general of Malebolgia's armies, he has been granted gifts that are truly out of this world...but it is only a fraction of what he'd normally have. The 'free trial' version, so to speak. Because of this, Al has a set amount of 'power' each day and night that he can draw from. It comes back, eventually, but if he starts using his powers too heavily he can end up drained, weakened and vulnerable. He'll always be able to regenerate, but if he is overstressed or 'tapped out', he heals much slower. He has incredible strength and endurance, but if he's tapped himself out then he's no more as strong and tough as the regular man he used to be. In fact, without his supernatural boons he's rather weak, as he's still technically a burnt, scarred and crippled dying person(have you ever stopped to think why his right gauntlet and boot are so big? He's subconsciously compensating for injuries he remembers getting in his previous life.).

Certain things don't cause the 'counter' to count down. He can use his chains all day if he wanted, and his natural strength and ability to regenerate, these don't cause any problems on their own. It is when he starts using the cape's shapeshifting or other abilities, it's when he starts throwing energy blasts, and especially when he starts utilizing teleportation that he'll start getting drained and fatigued.

Divine Weapons
holy or otherwise godly weapons are especially devastating and disruptive to Al's new necroplasmic-filled body. The pain is excruciating, and can trigger an automatic response before Al has time to consciously think about it.

Enemy of Heaven
Spawn is meant to be a general in one of Hell's armies, a chosen champion of the fiend Malebolgia. Even though Al himself doesn't intend to honor this deal, there are some from higher walks of life who feel threatened by his very existence. For this reason, the forces of Good might throw their own champions and warriors at him.

(Author's note: Given the shared crossover setting that this is, I'm expanding 'Heaven' and 'Good' to not just mean the traditional Christian sense. If the Greek, Norse, Cosmic or otherwise pantheons also want to get in on this, they are more than welcome to.)

Malebolgia
Al doesn't entirely remember his time in Hell, but he cut a deal with the demon known as Malebolgia. Precisely who the figure is, or the extent of the deal that was cut, Al doesn't entirely remember. The briefest memories he sees in his nightmares involve fire and pain, the hands of a clock stretching down a hallway forever, and the hands are his but he can't scream.

Given how testy demons and devils and other figures are about giving their real name, there's no telling who 'Malebolgia' could actually be, but whoever he was, he was powerful. Which means if Al doesn't live up to his bargain(whatever that may be), he's going to have a very, very powerful enemy on his tail.

Also, it's known that the 'Clown'(aka The Violator) is an agent of this powerful being, and this agent has taken a particular liking to Al for whatever reason. The Hellspawn might not ever have a true moment of peace and quiet again.

Shapeshifting
When Al uses his abilities to take on a different form, many of his other abilities are inaccessible to him. He is not as strong, or as fast, or as tough as he normally would be, and any form of major distraction can take him out of the form instantly. So things like being attacked, or extreme emotions.

Wanda

The love of his life, and the woman he can never be with again. He'll unturn any stone to keep her safe, and bring hell to anyone who touches a hair on her head. Being what he is, moving on from her isn't much of an option, instead he's stuck in the 'longing for her forever' stage of his undead existence. This means that he'll walk into any trap, knowingly or not, if it means protecting her...or stalking and keeping tabs on her daily.
