Description:

This man is what one would call slender with features that can only be described as almost delicate. He stands at six feet and appears to be in his lower thirties. The upper portion of his dark, midnight hair is pulled back in a braid, the tail of the braid and the rest of his hair left loose to hang down to his lower back. His dark brows arch over a pair of slanted deeply brown eyes that are so dark they're only a few shades shy of black. Between them, his nose is straight and narrow and leads to soft looking lips. His complexion is pale. The fingers of his hands long and graceful looking.

Curiously, he's dressed in what appear to be traditional style robes of the type a monk might wear. They are pale grey edged in darker grey with an outer robe of deep blue. Who knows what might be held within the folds of those robes? A deep blue sash holds it all together. Upon the sash is a tassel of grey and deep blue with several alternating blue and white beads. Tucked into the sash is a flute of white jade, carved with a swirl pattern of pale blue. A tassel matching the one on his belt is hung a few inches from one end. When he's not holding his folding fan, it's tucked next to the flute. It also has a tassel matching the others on the bottom. On his feet are slippers of the same style in a pale grey. He is sometimes seen with a sheathed sword, a dao, at his left side. The first impression is white and deep grey with a pair of tassels that match the rest.

History

History:

Xiang Zhao had a pretty typical childhood if one takes into consideration just where he grew up and the fact that he's the clan leader's youngest grandson. A remote family clan in the eastern Himalayas not far from Namcha Barwa mountain and very isolated, known for producing monks and magical practitioners, most practicing methods toward becoming immortal. The closest village was several days journey off the mountain. With electronics services intermittently working, Zhao is quite familiar with living without such things. He might know what a computer is, but he's never used one. Ability to work with magic can lead to interesting effects when trying to use such advanced technology. Thus, while the clan /has/ a computer, it's in the clan leaders' study and only he, and occasionally the other elders, use it. Much of his days were spent learning meditation and martial arts, including the sword, polearm, spear, even fan. In the evenings, he learned a standard education, along with music, meditation, and the ever practical cooking.

Among the Xiang clan were many Taoists and magic users, so Zhao grew up all but soaking up such teachings as simply being how life was. As he reached fourteen, he begun instruction in how to use the family's magics, something that was steeped often in the mysticism of their religion, as well as music. Music, he learned, could often sooth the soul. Especially if intent and magical power were put behind it. He learned how to meditate to both expand and refill his magical reserves, or qi as it was called amongst his clan. Though they call it qi, or spirit or spiritual power, it is, in reality, simply magic, but due to their religion of Taoism, that is how they understand and interpret it. He learned how to manipulate magic both with and without the use of paper talismans. Talismans with a physical representation tend to be of longer duration and better effect, but as with life, all is transitory. Nothing lasts forever.

Throughout his life in the mountains, Zhao encountered a Jiuweihu, a nine-tailed white fox, named Huli Jing. This fox was also wanting to gain immortality, and was resentful and jealous of Zhao for what it saw as the relative ease with which he gained and mastered his magical powers. From time to time, Huli Jing would sneak into wherever Zhao happened to be meditating and disrupt the process. More often than not, the little fox succeeded, often rendering Zhao unconscious.

Thus went life until Zhao went into seclusion to meditate away from distractions to advance to the next level of ranking within the clan. Upon emerging, he'd be a higher ranked member of the clan. However, things didn't quite work out the way he, or the rest of the clan, had imagined they would. After a surge in the ambient magic around Zhao, no doubt caused by Huli Jing, caused a chaotic surge of the magic within him. When he woke up this time, he wasn't in his clan's home, nor even on the mountain, but in Central Park in New York City. Eek?

Personality

Personality:

Zhao's personality is tranquil and quiet. He tends to be calm and unruffled and is slow to anger. This is not to say that nothing will anger him. Quite the opposite. Once he's angered, that anger tends to burn brightly, but also, usually, dies as quickly as it had been ignited. He is very patient and always tries to do the right thing from his perspective. If he's wrong, he'll admit it. Given a good enough reason, he can be convinced to change his mind, even once it's been made up. Zhao is a little too quiet most of the time to be overly charismatic, but that very quiet might lend people to listen to him when he actually does have something to say.

Abilities

Binding:
A single 'line' of magical power that ties two people together. The strength of the binding depends on how much power Zhao puts into it. It can be broken if the people it's on are stronger in power than what it's been set at. It can also be cut by a sharp object of there is will or power or magic behind the cut. They can go up to 20 feet apart, but no further unless the line is broken. It will last as long as it's not broken or removed by Zhao. Requires concentration to keep it in place. This does nothing except to keep two people hooked together. Requires certain hand motions to cast. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Fire:
Can range from acting as a small light source, to creating fire in a line up to ten feet in a line or five feet in a circle. Using fire as a small light source doesn't require much power, but the longer it's held, the harder it is to maintain and the more draining it becomes. Fire in a line or circle can be maintained for no more than ten minutes at a time, less if it's taller than six feet. Holding it longer than that without meditating for at least ten minutes drains his reserves too much and can lead to him becoming unconscious. Requires certain hand motions to cast. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Float:
With a hand motion and concentration, this allows Zhao to float down from a height too great to jump from. The further to float, the more magical power it uses in a steady drain. No more than 100ft. This can be cast while falling if Zhao can concentrate well enough. He can carry 1-2 people down with him or the equivalent weight. One extra person takes double the energy. Two takes triple. One extra person, 50ft. Two, 25ft. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Healing:
This works much like the healing when Zhao is in deep meditation and he must go into a similar state for it to work. Requires hand motions to start the process and physical contact for the duration of the power being transferred to boost the healing process, twice as fast as a very fit young person for wounds or poison. Magical power must be transferred every six hours for the speed boost to continue. He will have to meditate for at least an hour or more between each casting to replenish his strength or will wind up drained. He can use this method to replenish another's magic/powers, but that is a direct correlation. Whatever he transfers is what they get with no other boosts or benefits to their own powers other than restoring their own reserves. The more he transfers, the more he is drained. If he transfers too much, he will pass out. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Jump:
With a hand motion and concentration, Zhao can jump higher than a normal person. No greater than 15ft. He can carry 1 person with him, or the equivalent weight. By himself doesn't take a lot of energy. Carrying an extra person, he can't do more than a few jumps without draining himself. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Magical Block:
This is a defensive magic that can block strikes, physical or from powers/magic. Can be used in Zhao's immediate vicinity, or 'thrown' in one direction to disrupt an inbound object or power up to 20 feet away. Can only block a single inbound attack or object at a time. With powers, the stronger the attack, the more magical power it needs to work. Deflecting a single bullet or the shot from a single shotgun shell requires little effort, but stopping a speeding vehicle would drain Zhao. He might be able to stop a runaway train or airplane, if he's in front of it, but he would not be conscious afterward. Requires a certain hand motion. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Magical Strike:
This is an offensive magic that can attack a physical or metaphysical object or powers/magic. Can be used in Zhao's immediate vicinity, or 'thrown' in one direction to strike at a distance of up to 20 feet away. Damage done depends on the amount of magical power put into it, from a small tap up to taking down/breaking through a wall. This works well on anything up to steel. Zhao's limit on that is about 6 inches of solid steel. Anything stronger than that is beyond his capabilities. Intent and slightly adapted hand motion can make it be like a slash, a stab, or a blunt object. The larger the strike, the more power it takes. Requires certain hand motions. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Meditation:
Zhao can meditate to the point where he's unaware of the world around him but for the flow of magic, or shallowly enough he's aware of everything around him. This can only be done in an upright position, legs folded and lower arms resting on knees, eyes closed. His heart rate and breathing both slow during meditation. During deep meditation, he can draw in magical power to replenish his reserves. He can also expand those reserves during deep meditation, though this is a very slow, gradual process and it can take years to gain even a handful more capacity to hold magical power. If he uses certain hand motions as he's going into deep meditation, it can help him heal more quickly from wounds, about twice as fast as a very fit young person for wounds or poison. Takes minimum of 6 hours to fully restore depleted reserves. Cannot be used with other active magic or talismans.

Music Influence:
This allows Zhao to imbue music he is playing, singing, or whistling with magical power, to be either harmful or helpful to the mind. This can range from helping to calm and balance the mind, through to causing the mind to become chaotic or enraged, depending on the music being played at the time. It can be used on anything alive or being controlled via mystical means. Duration is as long as the music is enforced with magical power. Distance is as far as the music can be heard. Does not work on things that cannot hear. This doesn't take a lot of power, but does come with some drawbacks. If the intent and music is helpful, the power needed is minimal and won't cause lasting damage. However, if harmful, this damages his soul and takes a lot more power and concentration to hold. Note: This cannot actively control anything, only influence 'emotional' state. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans. OOC: This is consent based. Will not work well or at all unless the player/staff controlling the character, NPC, or object wants it to work.

Net:
This allows Zhao to essentially 'cast a net' made of magical power. The lines of the net glow faintly and can be touched without causing pain or damage. The net is simply to block anything larger than the holes from getting past it. It can be put up to block passage, or in a dome to keep something in or out of a specific area. Size can be no larger than 15x15ft(but can be smaller). Any larger than that and Zhao doesn't have enough power to hold it for more than a few seconds against an effort to get through it. Duration depends on what's being held and the size of the net. The smaller it is, the stronger it is. Super strength wont be stopped for more than a few seconds no matter the size of the net. Normal humans for up to 10 minutes if they are trying to break through. The larger it is, the more power is needed. Requires active concentration to hold in place. Damage to the net causes damage to Zhao. Each hit will leave a bruise. Each strand cut, will leave a cut. Requires certain hand motions to cast. Cannot be used at the same time as other spells or active talismans.

Sense Auras:
Everything has an aura, be it good, or evil, or magical, or something else entirely. Once active, Zhao will always be able to get a feel for the auras around him and a sense of good, evil, murderous, etc within them unless they are masked or hidden.

Even objects that are old enough, or have been used often enough have auras. Objects used in rituals or ceremonies, or for killing, often wind up emitting that type of aura, as though what they have been used for has been soaked into the very fabric of their existence. For instance, a weapon that has killed a lot of people, whether in battle, or via a serial killer would have a killing or murderous aura depending who had wielded it.

People, spirits, and other intelligent beings all have auras too, though their auras aren't the same as an object's. Their auras come naturally and often are formed by their life experiences. Sometimes they contain strong emotions. Xiang can sometimes feel those emotions if they are strong enough to permeate a person's aura.

Xiang can feel or see auras up to a mile away, but they have to be strong indeed. If he can feel an aura, he can tell roughly what direction it's coming from and in that way track it down, but it takes time because the sense of direction tends to be vague if he can't see it, or his sight is blocked.

If someone is masking their aura, or has masked the aura of an object, depending on skills and/or power he may not be able to sense or see the aura.

    • This will be used with player consent only.**

Talismans1:
Note: Zhao will eventually learn or create new types of talismans as well, though the meditation, research, and practice involved may take weeks or more for each. The research of can be dangerous for Zhao's body and mind.
* Alert: Requires two or more talismans, written by the same person with their blood to link them. One or more talismans are left in a location, the other needs to be in contact with Zhao. If something out of the ordinary happens where the 'watch' talismans are, or if they are touched or disturbed, the 'alert' talisman with Zhao sets itself on fire and burns until it is ash. Ow? That's actual fire. This is a passive talisman except when on fire. When it is burning, Zhao cannot use other talismans or spells. If he's in the middle of using a spell or talisman and the alert sets itself on fire, it will disrupt the other magic being used. This has a range of 50 miles.
* Attract/Repel Evil Spirits: Includes ghosts, zombies, ghouls, etc. While this works well on 'spirits' without an active mind, things that can think for themselves won't be greatly affected by this beyond being aware that /something/ is trying to get their attention or tell them to go away. Depending on how much power is imbued into the talisman, the effective distance out in a circle from the talisman can range from 20-100 feet. The small ones don't take much power unless more than ten are being used at once. The larger ones take more power. One or two is fine. More than that is draining enough that Zhao might pass out. Cannot be used with other active talismans or spells.
* Message: This talisman allows Zhao to attach a note to it or write one on the back and send it to a single recipient. When the recipient releases it, the talisman turns to ash. Any note will also burn to ash unless it is removed first. The closer the recipient, the less power, the further away, the more power. The range is the planet he's on. At that distance, he can send no more than one or two before he has to meditate to refill is reserves. Zhao does not have enough power to send more than one message off planet within the same solar system before fully recharging his reserves, and doing so could possibly drain him enough to kill him. Note: Zhao cannot send a message to someone he hasn't met. He has to have gotten a feel for a person before he can find them to send a message in this way. Cannot be used with other active talismans or spells.
* Communication: This uses two or more talismans, drawn by the same person with their blood to link them. One talisman must remain in contact with Zhao, the others to whoever needs to communicate. Allows each to communicate as though speaking to each other standing close together. Works up to ten miles away. Any further than that and Zhao doesn't have enough strength to keep the line open. It becomes like trying to catch and hold water in your hands. It simply doesn't work.
* Suppress Magic/Power: Only affects what the talisman is touching, or whatever is within a line strung with multiple talismans. The more talismans, the greater the effect, but the more of Zhao's power it takes to work. He has to concentrate at all times during the suppression. Mostly, this is for objects. Conceivably, Zhao could use this on a person. But if that person is high level, someone like Doctor Strange or Jean Grey or Professor Xavier, /if/ he can get the talisman on them, /if/ he can get it to stick, it /might/ last a few seconds before he gets blasted back to feudal China. Cannot be used with other active talismans or spells. Note: This only works on powers/magic that affect the mind.

Talismans2:

  • Soul Calling: Calls a soul back to its body. Requires multiple talismans strung on a line around the body a soul belongs to. These must be written with blood. It takes a lot of power if the soul is willing. This does not work on an unwilling soul and will drain all of Zhao's power and damage his own soul. This is rarely done except in an extreme last resort and is something Zhao won't do if there's any other choice. The soul cannot be called back after 3 months have passed. OOC Note: This will only be done with staff approval and with the consent of any players involved. Cannot be used with other active talismans or spells.

Skills

Acrobatics:
Along with mastering martial arts comes a certain talent in acrobatics and being able to jump and tumble, roll and spin well.

Acupoints and Meridians:
This is the knowledge of what acupoints and meridians are where, and what the effects are when they are struck in a precise way. If certain places on the body are struck in the right way, it can lead to the muscles freezing in place (handy with captured bad guys) or even constricting blood flow (handy for slowing bleeding of wounds or circulation of poisons). The bad side of this is that his magical power flows along meridians and if struck or damaged in the right, or wrong, place, this can lead to restriction or loss of his ability to use his magic properly. Knowledge of acupoints and meridians does not give Zhao the ability to perform acupuncture. He has very limited knowledge of the methods of acupuncture and that knowledge is limited to the few times he's had that method used on him.

Alertness:
As with most martial artists, Xiang Zhao tends to be pretty alert when it comes to his surroundings.

Calligraphy:
The Chinese style of writing with paint brushes is a traditional one and Zhao has a decent hand at it. Also helps with Talismans.

Cooking:
While Xiang Zhao is a pretty good cook with various Chinese dishes, don't ask him to cook dishes from anywhere else. You might wind up with something that isn't edible.

Dance:
Don't ask Zhao to do a formal dance. You might get your toes stepped on. But dancing with a sword, or any sort of martial dance that he's familiar with and he's pretty good.

Horse Handling:
Zhao is familiar with saddling or harnessing a horse and is decent either in the saddle, or driving from the seat of a cart or wagon.

Intelligence:
Xiang Zhao is smart enough to be able to figure things out without too much of a problem. Harder problems might take him a bit longer, however.

Martial Arts:
Xiang Zhao is a master of kung fu, well versed in both unarmed and weapons. Weapons include sword, polearms, and war fan.

Musicianship:
Xiang Zhao prefers the flute when making music, but he is experienced with the guqin as well, a 7 stringed instrument that one plucks. He can also sing and whistle.

Mysticism:
Xiang Zhao is well versed in the mysticism surrounding Taoism.

Painting:
Writing with a brush lends itself well to learning how to paint with the same sorts of brushes. Zhao isn't the best, but he isn't bad either.

Stealth:
Having trained in the martial arts, Xiang Zhao has a certain ability with staying stealthy and hidden when the situation calls for it.

Willpower:

Zhao has quite a high level of willpower. After many years of training in meditation to tune things out, there are a lot of things that are less likely to affect him. However, nobody is impervious, and he can only tune things out to a point. Eventually, especially if there's power behind something, he'll be effected.

Resources

Clan Resources:
Once he regains contact with the Xiang clan, Zhao will have access to all of their fortune, weapons and possibly even personnel should he find himself in need of them. They are a large clan and have a good amount of resources and personnel, despite being in a remote place. Wealth will be in terms of being able to live comfortably and have enough general spending money to be able to cover emergencies, or a plane/ship ticket. He might conceivably have the money to buy an older used car, but never the money to buy a new one. Personnel will only ever consist of low level mystics or martial artists (cannon fodder, essentially). Rarely will any of the high level members of his clan be willing to travel as far as NYC, and will happen only with prior staff approval.

None Initially:

Xiang Zhao arrived in NYC from seclusion with nothing but the items he had on him. One set of traditional robes, one sword, a war fan, a flute, and a small folded up pouch containing calligraphy brushes, ink, and talisman paper.

Weaknesses

Bright Aura:
Zhao meditates quite a lot, so his magical 'aura' tends to shine brightly. This, sometimes, can be a hindrance. To creatures, and bad humans, that can detect such things, he glows like a spotlight. And for those things that feed off of that type of power... Zhao be screwed. With age, he'll learn to draw this aura into his body so it can be hidden, but he's many, many years away from being able to do that.

Huli Jing:
Huli Jing, a jiuweighu, or nine tailed white fox, is probably Zhao's greatest weakness. This fox is jealous and resentful of him, and so does her best to mess with his deep meditation whenever it has anything to do with his magical power. At least she hasn't, yet, managed to harm him too greatly. He doesn't know it yet, but this fox can shift into the form of a beautiful young woman. Huli Jing will never be on camera without prior staff approval or staff emitting her. She is meant to be something that haunts Zhao and nothing more than an ethereal spirit to anybody but him, to disrupt his sleep, meditation, or spells.

Indifference:
Because of how calm and collected Zhao tends to be, this might lead people to thinking he simply doesn't care about anything. The opposite is actually true. He sometimes cares too much. He simply doesn't show it and holds it in check. This could potentially lead to stupid decisions, such as sacrificing himself to save another.

Low Alcohol Tolerance:
Because of his sensitive nose, Zhao doesn't care for the scent of alcohol. Of any kind. It all stinks. Such that he doesn't drink hardly at all. Thus, on the very rare occasions when he does, he gets drunk very, very easily. First will be falling asleep for ten or fifteen minutes. Then will come the drunk Zhao, the chatty Zhao, the Zhao with no filters between his brain and his body. If he thinks it, he's either going to say it or do it.

Magic Has a Price:
Generally speaking, this is in terms of his energy and magic reserves. The bigger a spell, the more it's going to cost. Some spells can affect his mind or soul. Some can drain enough of his internal power to endanger his life. The rest range in between. This will be better defined on each spell.

Magic Not Tech:
Magic and electricity might not be that far from each other in the grand scheme of things. Having the ability to use magic without the age and experience that comes from a lifetime of practicing to keep that 'aura' contained within oneself can lead to some interesting effects when attempting to use any device with a program without that program going a little batty. Microwaves overcook or undercook. Computers do random searches, random sounds like they are possessed can come from them. Cell phones might call or text completely random numbers. Having not used modern tech, this is something Xiao is as yet unaware of.

Marijuana:
There are very few things that adversely affect Zhao. Marijuana is one of those things. It's not something he'd ever been exposed to where he grew up. Inhaling it, whether first hand or second, will make him nauseas and dizzy at the very best. The more he inhales, the worse the effect. If the exposure is prolonged for more than ten to fifteen minutes, it will render him unconscious, and there will likely be hallucinations along the way. Ingesting it is just as bad. A very small amount of the oil in food or drink will make him dizzy. More of it and he'll start seeing things. A large amount will render him unconscious.

Modern World Illiterate:
Because of the remote place Zhao is from, he's greatly illiterate of a lot of things other people take for granted. While he's familiar with phones, that would be the land line kind, not the cellular kind. Where he's from, there's no cell service. And the single computer runs on dial up internet and is something he's glimpsed once or twice in the clan leader's study. And it's one that doesn't resemble modern technology at all, with a thick, clunky monitor and a large tower. It's probably one from the earlier days of computers. He does at least know what a car is, having seen a couple of them, but never having ridden in one.

Sensitive Nose:
While a lot of people would consider this to be a good thing, things with a strong scent are no fun to be around. Bleaches and cleaners are enough to make Zhao's nose burn and make him nauseous. The stronger the concentration, the worse the effect. Decay and rot is the worst. Just a whiff will make his stomach roll. More than that will lead to him finding some handy bushes to get sick behind.

Watery Writing:
The paper tends to be fine, if damp, but neither ink nor blood cares much for water. Water makes the writing on Zhao's talismans run, rendering them useless, at best, or changing what they do in ways that are entirely unpredictable. Ways that may not lead to good things...

Writing Magic:

In order to use magic, be it talismans or other magic, Zhao has to have at least one finger free to move, and in most cases, the entire hand, at the very least to be able to direct the spell. Once it's written, he has to direct it on where to go, and for that, he uses his hand. That might consist of a pointed finger, or literally shoving the spell in the direction he wants it.
