National Defense: The Armed Forces of Atlantis maintain civil order; the Atlantean armoury includes various vessels with dual functions for service underwater and in aerial combat; many of the underwater models can be modified to appear as a marine creature. Defence of the capital is maintained by the Atlantean Royal Guard.

International Relations: Atlantis holds membership in the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development; Arab League; International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (O.P.E.C.), United Nations (U.N.), and United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (U.N.E.S.C.O.). Atlantis once helped construct the underwater Hydropolis base to assist relations with the surface people. Attilan and Latveria have been occasional allies. Invasions of the Terra Nueva and Kahndaq failed; invasions and annexation of Maritanis, Hy-Brasil, Bazilia, Merezonia, Thierna Na Oge, and Mazikhandar succeeded. The Avengers and Fantastic Four have usually been welcomed guests of Atlantis.

History: Magma vents were released during a war that took place over eleven thousand years ago. The tectonic plates shifted and the flooding was so intense that it caused the entire continent of Atlantis to sink down to the ocean floor. Almost two thousand years later, a group of Homo mermani reclaimed the lost city of Poseidonis. These new Atlanteans managed to eke out a life for themselves, and in time, it grew into a powerful empire. When the Emperor had twin sons, they agreed to share the emperorship, and this became the norm until the dual emperorship of Orin I and Tha-Korr. The defence of Poseidonis was bankrupting the Empire, so Tha-Korr sought to relocate to their southern territory. But Orin chose to remain. In time, Tha-Korr's realm evolved into the Principality of Atlantis that we know today. Since the defeat of Mazikhandar in 2015, the victorious Atlanteans have asserted their authority over the annexed territory.
