Profile

Namor the First is the Avenging Son, the Savage Sub-Mariner, the King of Atlantis, and the Ruler of the Seven Seas. Known for his powerful temper, he was a staunch ally of the Allied powers during the Second World War. For the past few decades, he's been comparatively quiet aside from a few impassioned speeches in front of the UN.

Description

The long-lost King of Atlantis, ladies and gentlemen. With his short 'water swept' black hair accentuating a widow's peak hairline, and his black brows arched so sharply that they practically come to points, his face doesn't need much help in the drama department. But whether it needs the help or not, it gets it in the form of a rigidly clenched jaw, a perpetually sneering upper lip, an excessively pointy nose, and blue-gray eyes that seem to be always narrowed in cranky frustration.

He appears to be a fan of minimalism, at least where clothing is concerned. A pair of scaley green briefs is about all he's got going that counts as 'clothing' rather than 'accessories.' The briefs are held in place by a belt of some type of golden metal with the trident symbol of the Atlantean Royal Crest adorning the belt buckle. Bracers of the same metal cover the majority of his forearms. Appearing simple from a distance, the ornate engraving enscribed upon them is only noticeable up close. The jewel-encrusted handle of an ancient-looking knife is kept in the similarly jewel-encrusted sheath attached to his metal belt. More than a foot long from pommel to point, it appears to be as functional as it is decorative.

Aside from their general whiteness, hairlessness, and clothedlessness, his legs are unremarkable aside from a pair of wings protruding from each of his ankles. Tiny, with white feathers, they look decidedly out of place on his otherwise aquatic-themed personage.

History

During the early stages of the Second World War, Axis powers discovered the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Threatened by the existence of an entire underwater nation that might disrupt their plans, the Axis conducted a brutal sneak attack in an attempt to wipe out the entire race of Atlanteans.

And so it was that young Namor, the heir to the throne, watched his mother and grandfather die while his kingdom crumbled around him. After the surprise bombing, the capital city had been rendered all but uninhabitable and the survivors of a once-great empire were numbered in the thousands. Namor vowed revenge on the surface world that had brought him such grief, and began swimming to the nearest land mass in order to wreak havoc upon the humans.

Unfortunately, he picked the wrong country to attack. Finding himself in New York City, Namor's assault was valiantly repelled by the original Human Torch, leaving the Atlantean to lick his wounds. Eventually, however, he came to see that the political situation on the surface was more complicated than he realized, and so he sided with a small group of superheroes to take his revenge on the Axis powers. His exploits as the Sub-Mariner became legendary, and the Axis powers learned to fear the outline of his advanced amphibious flagship.

The war ended, and Namor lost most of his friends on the surface world. He retreated beneath the waves, doing his best to guide his people. With their home destroyed, the Atlanteans remained nomadic, roaming the world near the ocean floor, never staying in one place long enough to become a target again.

But as the decades passed by, it became clear to the Atlanteans that there was not enough room on the planet for both Homo Sapiens and Homo Mermanus. Humans polluted the oceans that gave the Atlanteans life, and their constant warring proved them incapable of change. After a series of sternly-worded speeches before the UN, the political pressure began to mount for Namor to take action before the oceans became uninhabitable. Reluctantly, Namor has declared the ocean off-limits to humanity, and he and his fleet have begun to enforce this edict with military action.

Personality

The Sub-Mariner is a complicated man with a violent temper and frequent mood swings. He is impatient and stubborn, but not completely beyond reason. He does not shed blood lightly, but will not hesitate to eradicate his enemies when he finds himself fighting a war.

There is a certain bipolar quality to his temperament, though he is slightly more prone to fits of depression than merriment. Decades of attempting to shepherd a dying race have driven him to borderline desperation, and he sees no other options for safeguarding his people's future than eliminating the denizens of the surface world.

Abilities

FLIGHT
Although the little wings sprouting from his ankles don't really seem up to the task, Namor is nonetheless capable of flight at rates that exceed the speed of sound (767 mph). He is even capable of carrying vast weights (up to half of his maximum strength level) without any appreciable loss in speed, though his maneuverability is affected by additional weight.

HEALING
In the open air, Namor's healing abilities are the same as those of any unenhanced human. However, when submerged in salt water, he is able to recover much more quickly and can even recover from wounds that would have been near-fatal.

HYBRID PHYSIOLOGY
Namor's unique blend of Atlantean and human physiology gives him abilities that are not common to either group. It is likely that many of his abilities are actually the result of a mutation. Most notable among these are the ability to breathe both above and below the surface of the ocean. He is more suited to the ocean, however, and though he can breathe air just fine he weakens rapidly when out of the water.

Additionally, he is able to survive in the freezing waters of the ocean and temperatures of zero degrees Celsius do not affect him negatively. His eyesight is specially adapted to see through the incredibly salty water at the bottom of the ocean, and he can see well in extremely low-light conditions.

Finally, he's physically a beast.

IMMUNITY: COLD
The temperature at the bottom of the ocean is typically at or below freezing levels. Namor is capable of thriving in temperatures of zero degrees Celsius and can survive temperatures lower than that. He can even survive for very brief periods in the vacuum of space (seconds, not hours).

IMMUNITY: ELECTRICITY
Namor's body is capable of handling quite a bit of damage from electrical attacks. For the sake of simplicity, he could get grounded while in contact with a high voltage line with no permanent harm. It'd be unpleasant though.

REFLEXES
Namor's reaction times are lower than those of humans, allowing him to react to gunfire (though he can't exactly pluck bullets out of the air consistently) and missile attacks, sometimes even redirecting projectiles at his attackers.

SENSES
Namor's senses are extremely acute, particularly when he is underwater.

His vision is well-suited for the conditions found at the bottom of the ocean, allowing him to see in dark, murky conditions.

His hearing is advanced beyond human norms, which enables him to hear sounds at great ranges while also giving him abilities that seem to mimic those of sonar.

STRENGTH
Namor is physically one of the most powerful beings on the planet. Capable of lifting more than a hundred tons, he has been able to lift battleships out of the ocean and toss them to their doom as well as trade punches with various hulking monstrosities.

His strength is at its maximum when he is in the ocean, and it begins rapidly depleting when he is away from it. After about five minutes of breathing air, his strength lessens by about ten percent. This pattern continues the longer he is out, until he is at about half his normal strength after twenty five minutes.

SWIMMING
Namor's speed underwater is somewhere in the same range as his flight speed. The resistance being higher, his top speed is a bit lessened, but he's still able to outrace high-performance aircraft underwater.

TOUGHNESS

Namor's resilient body is capable of deflecting high-caliber rounds from modern weapons, surviving explosions, absorbing multiple Hulk/Thing/Thor punches, Cyclops blasts, and is generally regarded as invulnerable. Though he seems to be all but immune to impact forces, he is more susceptible to cuts, piercing attacks, and burns.

Skills

FIGHTING
Namor assumed the Throne of Atlantis by right of blood. He's only held the throne, however, by fighting off every warlord who thought he could do a better job. This typically necessitates hand to hand combat with savage men who have spent their entire lives training to take down a king. So far, Namor is still on the throne.

Underwater, Namor is possibly the finest hand to hand combatant on the planet. He's also extremely proficient with the bladed implements that he tends to prefer: spears and knives. When on the surface world he's a bit clumsier, but still proficient enough to filet most humans like a sea bass.

POLITICS
When he isn't distracted by a war, Namor is capable of being a pretty savvy political animal. It doesn't hurt that he's had numerous tutors in the arts of statecraft and diplomacy, and that he has been playing the game for about ninety years. In politics, as in everything else, he's a warrior first. This means that he tends to think of political manipulation as simply another weapon in his arsenal.

TACTICS
As the heir to the throne of his people, Namor was well-schooled in military science from an early age. Expected to hold his own in a fight in addition to leading his people into battle, his martial and tactical prowess is second to none among his people. Namor has been commanding a fleet of advanced submarines since the destruction of much of his home by the Germans near the beginning of World War II, and the decades of maneuvering warships has made him a top-tier naval commander.

As a combatant on the surface world, Namor also holds a great deal of prestige. His battles against the Axis powers with the Invaders are still the stuff of legend, and his fights against various superheroes have frequently resulted in wins for the Scion of the Seas.

ATLANTEAN FLEET
Ever since the destruction of much of Atlantis during WWII, Namor's people have become a militaristic and nomadic group. The Atlantean submarine fleet was, at the time of World War II, the most technologically advanced group of warships ever to originate from Earth. A vast group comprised of many thousands of ships, it is a constant source of dread to the leaders of the surface world.

As the years have gone by, humanity has begun to catch up with Atlantean technology, leaving the discrepancy in power less noticeable than it was in the Forties. There aren't adequate repair facilities for the entire Fleet, nor are there many master shipbuilders capable of repairing and replacing the ancient technology. This has caused the number of active ships to gradually lessen over the decades. Still, the Atlantean Fleet is the mightiest of its kind on the planet, and is more than capable of outclassing any naval force that the surface world could hope to muster.

ATLANTEAN TECH
Namor was raised in a society that is more advanced than most nations on Earth, with a few possible exceptions. As such, Namor is not out of place with energy weapons or superior tech. craft and vehicles. As the Ruler of Atlantis, Namor has access to these items as well as many others.

Some items he has been known to use are: Energy Trident. This is the symbol of the Rulership of the Atlantean people. It is made of a nearly indestructible alloy, on par with titanium, and contains an energy sheen that adds to the damage inflicted by the Ruler of Atlantis' strikes. It can cut through materials up to 2 feet thick steel, and Namor has been known to use it against naval vessels.

Superior Water Craft. These craft go at incredible speeds through the water, up to 200 hundred miles per hour, and contain technology just under that of Wakandan tech. Namor usually swims in the water however, and these craft can barely keep up with the Lord of Atlantis.

DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY
As the leader of a nation, Namor has diplomatic immunity whenever he visits countries other than Atlantis. This means that any crimes he commits are unable to be prosecuted in a conventional court, and he can not be sued by citizens of any foreign government.

NUMENOR'S SPEAR
As the rightful ruler of Atlantis, Namor wields the spear of his distant ancestor Numenor. Created by master craftsmen using ancient Atlantean metallurgy, it is still as sharp as the day it was forged. This allows it to continue to be used for practical applications, like harpooning his enemies. However, its primary use is symbolic, and it tends to mostly be held as an ersatz sceptre.

SUNKEN SHIPS
Atlanteans have a special knack for 'finding' sunken ships and pilfering their precious cargo. How exactly the ships sank in the first place is none of your business, surface worlder.

This treasure has been built up over centuries, making Namor one of the wealthiest men on the planet. But these days he's way more interested in the technological goodies and raw materials that he's able to acquire from modern vessels. Coincidentally, there's been a massive uptick in the number of vessels reported missing the past few years...

TECHNOLOGY
The Atlanteans are an incredibly advanced race, and have been since around the time humans first learned to read. For centuries they have possessed tech which still does not exist on the surface world, though the surface world is starting to catch up pretty quickly.

Namor has access to exotic energy weapons, and a variety of tools and equipment that is specially adapted for use underwater. Of course, he can accomplish most of his goals with a harpoon and a knife...

Weaknesses

POLITICAL CLIMATE
The climate is changing, and humanity hasn't done enough to stop it. This has had especially harmful effects on the creatures who live in the Seven Seas, including the Atlanteans. Between the shameless pollution of Earth's oceans, and the rising levels of carbon rendering the ocean more acidic, and the temperature changes altering the balance of life underwater... well, you get the idea.

As the oceans become less hospitable for the Atlanteans, and the men of the surface world continue to do too little, political pressure has begun to build on Namor from within his own government, and the other nations of the seas. He must do something, and his sternly-worded speeches before the UN and the world's leaders have largely fallen on deaf ears.

Additionally, Namor's impassioned speeches, strong rhetoric, and practice of occasionally seizing and sinking ships that he finds to be in violation of the laws of the ocean, are all causing Atlantis' relationship with the surface world to be incredibly strained. The entire situation is a potential powder keg, and the right turn of events could easily set it all off.

DEHYDRATION
A creature of the seas, Namor's respiration and biological processes are less effective when out of his element. When working on the surface, Namor's strength is effectively halved, though not instantaneously. For every five minutes he spends out of the water, his strength and stamina decrease by about ten percent of their maximum until he stabilizes at around half of his physical peak.

Even with reduced strength, Namor is capable of operating just fine on the surface. However, if he goes too long without returning to the ocean (couple of days) he begins to feel even more acute weakness, and can actually begin to get sick. If trapped away from the ocean and not kept properly hydrated he will eventually die.

HYBRID
Namor's father was a human, his mother was Atlantean royalty. It's impossible to overstate how much scandal the circumstances of Namor's birth caused when he was first revealed to his people. Unlike nearly every other true Atlantean, Namor's skin is not blue, marking him permanently and obviously as someone of mixed birth. The question of whether or not he's a 'true' Atlantean has long been raised by would-be usurpers, and it will probably make his position on the throne more difficult for as long as he lives.

NOMADIC
During World War II, Atlantis was repeatedly bombed by the Axis powers in an attempt to destroy them before they could join the war effort. These attacks ultimately spurred Namor to fight for the Allies, but they destroyed a lot of Atlantean infrastructure and devastated the population.

Ever since the war, the Atlanteans have been slow to rebuild, and reluctant to stay rooted in one place. This has led them to develop a somewhat nomadic culture, with a large portion of the population residing permanently in the submarines that make up the Atlantean Fleet.

As the Commander of the Atlantean Fleet, Namor is constantly on the move, living a life more befitting Captain Nemo than a Prince of the Blood. For decades, this hunger-gatherer lifestyle allowed the Atlanteans to maintain their standard of living. But as the oceans become more polluted, and resources become scarcer, the Atlanteans are starting to tighten their belts.

Constant movement is also keeping the Atlanteans from properly replacing the aging ships that make up the Fleet. It's also caused the Atlanteans to place too much focus on training warriors, and not enough focus on... anything else.

Furthermore, without a home the birth rates of Atlanteans has remained incredibly low. Despite the long-livedness of the race, Namor's people are a species that is in decline whether they want to admit it or not. Only when the oceans have been restored will the Atlanteans be able to truly have a place to call home. And only then will they finally be able to rebuild and replenish their numbers. Hopefully it's not already too late.

PIRATE
Namor is a wanted criminal, and considered a terrorist by most in the Military-industrial Complex. His acts of sabotage disrupt oceanic trade routes, destroy the facilities of corporate polluters, and generally provide an extremely hazardous nuisance to anyone who wishes to make a few dollars at the expense of the planet.

Technically a displaced rogue state, the Atlantean Fleet provides a tempting target for the navies of the world. It is only a matter of time before Namor finds himself the target of an effective assassination attempt, or his people find themselves in a war with the entire surface world.

POLLUTION
Like all Atlanteans, Namor prefers clean ocean water. When exposed to the toxins and pollutants that accompany modern industrial waste, he becomes sick, weakened, and most importantly, cranky. These industrial irritants can spur Atlanteans into acting in ways that seem irrational, the way humans would act if they were locked in a room full of farts.

Depending on the levels of toxicity or radiation, real health defects are possible. Given the persistent nature of pollution, there is often little the Atlanteans can do but to try and clean up humanity's messes or avoid vast areas of the ocean altogether.

TEMPERAMENT
Namor is known as much for his passionate and mercurial nature as he is for his powers or pointed ears. Everything he does, he does with gusto, and he behaves in a manner befitting a conqueror whether he's on the battlefield, the boardroom, or the bedroom. His temper tantrums are legendary, as are his periods of depression, but he's as quick to laugh as he is to shout.

None of his sounds altogether bad, and in a way it isn't. However, Namor is first and foremost the ruler of Atlantis, and nobody in a position of leadership can afford to be ruled by their passions. Unfortunately for Namor, and his people, Namor's passions tend to dictate the course of policy.
