Nolan Voight was once known as Twig, a cripple abandoned as an infant by his prostitute mother, abused in countless foster homes and finally running away to end up on the hard streets of Gotham City as a pickpocket junkie. What most did not know was that he could see and talk to the dead. 13 years ago he went to prison for murder and seemingly disappeared into the system. Now he has returned, a man almost in full control of his gift. He walks the streets of Gotham once more, by day an unliscenced 'psychic' detective (and Gotham's secret resident magic user) and by night using his hidden abilities as the vigilante/criminal Deadwatch, . Shrouded by illusion, spirits and with magic at his call he secretly gathers knowledge, resources and power to protect the weak from predatory entities both mortal and not... and maybe gaining a few creature comforts and wealth along the way.

Description:

Nolan is a red-headed, late-twenties/early-thirtysomething caucasian male with pale though freckled skintones and afflicted with heterochromia, his left eye a warm molten amber with gold flecks and the right eye a cold bright cornflower blue with faint with silver flecks. He is of near average height, five foot ten, but not average build. Gaunt and lanky is one way to describe him. Like one of those english poets you read about who were on the way to have succumbed to Consumption. His shoulders are narrow and arms long, ending in long fingered hands of which one is heavily scarred and sometimes shakes. His legs also seem mismatched, one normal and toned but the other seems faintly twisted or warped. He walks with an extremely heavy limp.

Nolan is currently dressed in simple but well cut and fit black slacks, black leather boots which are well polished, and a bluish-white silk high collared shirt with a conservative black leather vest with silver buttons that is worn open. Over that, if it is cold, he wears a an old black leather jacket which bears the marks where patches once were but have since been removed.

He sports an elbow crutch, on which he leans for support and his right leg is strapped into an old fashioned brace from his upper thing to his foot where the sturrup fits down under his boot. He wears fingerless black leather gloves which cover what may be prison knuckle tattoos.

History

History:
Many years ago Nolan was known as Twig, a crippled streetkid who panhandled, picked pockets, and ran scam games on the streets of Gotham. An orphan, he had been abandoned as an infant by his junkie prostitute mother and bounced around from one abusive foster home to another, bullied and terrorized for years because he saw 'Ghosts'. After almost being killed during a beating he lost control of his power and physically summoned ghosts that drove his attack er insane and started fire that allowed him to escape.

On the streets he was aided by the many spirits that walked The Dark (as he called the astral plane) of Gotham. His ability was the key to his survival but between the chronic pain of his disabilities and the unrelenting barrage of spirits would overwhelm him. It wasn't long before he became a junkie, like his mother had been to dull the extremes of both.

A life of street crime saw Twig at the bottom of the totem pole more or less, but he persevered, promising himself he would work his way up someday to be 'a big deal'. By 18 he was tasked to courier a package of a new high-end drug to a gang in New York. Once There he discovered the gang leader was the foster kids who had terrorized him and had killed a young girl Twig had been sweet on. The leader recognized him and a battle ensured. Twig was beat to within an inch of his life, his heart actually stopping. The spirits flowed through him, restarting his heart and sending him into a ghost-ridden, magic fueled berserker rage and killed the gang leader..

Twig was found arrested, and after a trial sentenced to fifteen years for Murder 2 and Possession of a controlled substance. He was incarcerated at Ryker's Island. Bullied and terrorized again he was attacked on multiple occasions until he was saved by the spirit of a dead inmate named Crumble, a low level magic using hitman and theif who had died in prison. In return for ongoing protection of Twig and mentoring in the occult, all he asked was a single favor, upon Twig's release

After a decade and some change of surviving prison, bettering himself mentally, physically and 'spirtitually', the prisoner once known as Twig was paroled early. Now going by his birth name for the first time in his life, Nolan made good on his favor to crumble and called Those Who Judge, the entities who come for who the lost souls and shepherd them to the afterlife. Nolan doesn't know what happened to Crumble after that but he wished his friend peace.

Nolan was paroled and has returned to Gotham. He knows the streets are still haunted, by both human and inhuman suffering and cruelty, but no longer fears their ghosts. He lived a life of pain and suffering and he is damned if he will ever again. He has power. He has skills. He has a thirst for the finer things that were denied him his entire existence yet at the same time feels he owes the weak a chance to be protected and revenged.

The first few months he worked he worked the streets of Gotham as as an unlicensed private detective (and psychic) for Drop Dead Investigations, which only advertised by word of mouth and a few randomly places business cards. When he wasn't using his skills (and abilities) to 'detect' he was honing his magical abilities and protecting Gotham from supernatural threats which he felt even the city's usual protectors had no clue how to handle.

History2:

It was during this time he met a fellow practitioner of greater skill than he and who officially became a sort of mentor and, not long after, lover. But the witch's mental instabilities and, to be truthful, his own as well) proved to hard to overcome and their relationship ended. Adrift, Nolan left Gotham for parts unknown and has only recently returned after over a year away, seemingly ready to finally (and secretly) take on the mantle of Wizard of Gotham as well as return to his investigations.

But sometimes Nolan needs to do more than just investigate or protect Gotham from monsters and spirits. Sometimes he has to do things that other heroes would find objectionable. So o when he needs to, Nolan takes on the guise of The Deadwatch, a ghostly vigilante/criminal is slowly working his way through the shadows and alleyways of Gotham (or wherever he is called). Using his gift (and curse) to protect the weak from the strong and predatory, be they alive or dead. From the evil things that lurk in The Dark, human or otherwise.

Not even death will save those who defile the innocent.

Personality

Personality:

Despite the hassle and how they can sometimes overwhelm him, Nolan is someone who sometimes finds it easier to interact with ghosts. Easier, not exactly nicer. He can be grumpy, almost cantakerous, and definately sarcastic to both the living AND the dead. So many years in prison, and his childhood, can make him sometimes guarded. Some people think he's a nutcase because he talks to thin air, or cracks jokes at the weirdest time, but the first is just how his power works and the second is a defense mechanism. He has a very protective streak for Victims and underdogs because he spent so much of his life being one. He doesn't take compliments well, unsure if they are sincere or not. And Authority is for the birds.

Nolan has a very.. pragmatic view about justice. He has no qualms hurting anyone or thing that predates on the weak. As Deadwatch he will even kill if he feels it nessacary.

Because of his years of being destitute Nolan believes he deserves the better things in life now. He will certainly steal from bad people without any hard feelings. He also has a sense of charity, however, and will begrudgingly share his spoils with those in need.

Abilities

Darksight:
Nolan's mismatched eyes give him the innate ability to see beyond the regular world at those other worlds that exist overlayed on our own but out of sight from normal people. The Darksight allows him to see Auras, Ghosts, Spirits, Divine and Demonic powers, Souls and other supernatural entities that interact with our own plane. He can also see the flow and ebb of magic and can pierce illusions and glamour to see the true nature of things. It also gives him a form of night vision.

Darkwalk:
Nolan has learned how to push himself, body and soul, into that layer of astral space he calls The Dark, allowing him to inhabit that shadowy mirror world beyond that ghosts inhabit. He can pass through most materials this way since they are but shadowy echoes of their real world counterparts unless they are warded, thresholded, or imbued with supernatural purpose. In this form he can physically interact with spirits, but can also be hurt by them too. His magic and other abilities work in The Dark, almost doubly empowered by their direct immersion in the shadow realm, but cannot effect the living world until he steps back into it. It takes quite a bit of energ to pass between these layers of reality, and can only stay within The Dark for short periods of time.

Magic:
Due to his unknown Homo Magii heritage Nolan has the ability to access and use magic like any other Magi. While his innate talent with the Darksight with gives him an edge with spells regarding the manipulation, summoning and banishing of Ghosts/Spirits (Ectomancy) and with Illusion he has slowly been training himself (sometimes with the help of others, and not always /alive/ others) in other esoteric magical arts to expand his repertoire to other disciplines. He knows a number of various spells and rituals but is always looking for more.

Psychic Medium:
Perhaps the source of his Darksight, an artifact of his Homo Magii Ancestry, or some mixture of both, Nolan is an /extrememly/ gifted sensitive medium. Beyond just seeing otherworldly supernatural energy (his darksight) Nolan has the ability to directly Communicate with Ghosts, Spirits, and Supernatural Entities as naturally as people communicate with each other. With his magical training and the raw power of his Medium ability he can summon not just ghosts and spirits that reside in the dark (the astral shadow world of our plane) but can (with his occult knowledge) summon or communicate with entities creatures from OTHER supernatural realms, even with souls that have crossed over into thd afterlife, though these otherworldy realms are a lot harder to connect to. Finally, he is able to allow himself to be possessed by spirits, either allowing them (temporary) control over his body to interact with the real world or to (again temporairily) utilize their skills and abilities.

Psychic Shields:
A life time of continual assault from spiritual and mental entities has forced Nolan to develope quite potent Pyshic Shields to ward off against unwilling possessions. Unfortunately his addictions and constant pain can sometimes diminsh his potential but even then his shields are stronger than the average psychic.

Psychometry:

The ability to read the history of an object or place or even a person by touch. Nolan's psychic ability, being sensitive to 'memory' and 'intent' and 'emotion' (since that is what ghosts and spirits truly are) have gifted Nolan with the ability to read these things from obejects and places and even people. It is NOT as strong as his abilituies with living spirits, objects and places usually not having any life force of their own. The object cannot be some throw away thing, having to either be something very personal to someone (a hair brush from grandma, a beloved teddy bear) or something used with powerful passion and intent. (A gun used in a premeditated murder though not the bullets). How USEFUL or CLEAR the information will be is up to Admins/GM's or something to be worked out between players.

Skills

Brawling:
He may be crippled but Nolan knows how to defend himself quite well, especially with his elbow crutch. He grew p on the streets of gotham, after all, and while he wasn;'t always the winner in any brawl he was definately not always the loser either. A decade in prison, getting himself into much better shape (despite his physical limitations) and being trained by the ghosts of prisoners killed in prison (this giving them perfect 20/20 hindsight on how they SHOULD have fought) has turned Nolan into a very passible brawler.

Investigation:
While in prison Nolan was planning for his eventual future, post release. Educating himself with courses available to him, the prison's library, and some ghostly learning he has been teaching himself to become a Detective like the old fashioned gumshoes (though with, in his case, an otherworldly slant). While his book learning is pretty thorough (investigative procedures, research, some law) his in the field experience is still limited. His abilities do help, however, able to add to his investigative skills.

Occult:
While informally trained Nolan has knowledge of the occult, though it's somewhat haphazard in some things and spcialized in the next. This is because a lot of what he picked up was from various sources in prison (Not all prisoners are Christians or Muslim, after all) and from the ghosts and spirits he has interacted with interacts with. He has a working knowledge of the general occult that is somewhat better than most studious wannabe wiccan "priestesses" and knows many basic religious and mystical rituals. His knoweldge about the dead, spirits, and other supernatural entities is quite a bit better, since he actually talks to them on a regular basis. This includes types of ghosts and spirits, why they haunt or possess, excorcisms if various beliefs, etc.

Sketch Artist:
His head always full of things no on else could see, Nolan learned to Draw at a young age. It helped him in his therapy with his crippled hand. It also aided him when doing symbol work in magic.

Sleight of Hand:
Nolan spent his childhood on the street learning sleight of hand. He was an a accomplished pickpocket and game con artist, taught by the spirits of dozens of former (aka dead) street kids.

Streetwise:

Growing up on Gothan's streets, and spending 13 years in prison, Nolan has knowledge of the "seamy" side of life. Like where to get illegal and contraband items, how to talk to criminal types, and how to avoid bad situations in dangerous neighborhoods.

Crutch:
Nolan's forearm crutch is more than just a means of supporting him when he walks. The metal crutch has beeninscribed with symbols and runes, emueing with the ability to absorb the kinetic force everytime it strikes the ground. The force is stored in the crutch and can be released in increments (with the strength of a heavey-weight boxer's punch) or all at once in a single blast(did anyone get the number of that truck that hit me?) that drains the crutch. The crutch also acts like a wizards stave, allowing him to enhance or focus spells that require such, or empower them with the stored energy. It takes about three days of constant walking with the crutch to recharge it after a full blast has been used.

Drops:
Nolan has secreted a number of hidden drops around Gotham, places where he hid small things when he was younger. Not all of them are still there but many of them still exist. Money he squirreled away. Knives. Guns.. trinkets

Ghostly Informants:
Nolan can gather quite a bit of information from the souls and spirits that walk among us. Where some things are hidden or lost. Things that ghosts overhear mortals stalk about. Sometimes he can even get them to spy for him, if he offers a good enough favour.

Ghostly Posse:
A step above his usual ghostly network, Nolan has what can only be desdribed as a Posse of more powerful spirits who aid him, personally. The Posse is comprised of a bakers dozen of ghosts from multiple eras of Gotham's past. These souls are stronger than average, more realized, and have abilities that weaker ghosts do not posess, like being able to manifest without Nolan's help, move small things, effect the local environment, etc. Split down the middle between reputable and criminal types they follow Nolan out of loyalty, providing services, insight and skills that Nolan himself doesn't have.

Gothams Sorcerer:
Born of Gotham, Nolan has taken up the mantle (whether it be official or not) as Gothams resident Sorcerer. It isnt a super well known fact among mortals, or even supers, but the Mystical community has started hearing about Gothams newest magic user over the last year even if the information is sparse. It is known he was in prison at one point. It is known his magic is sometimes is of a darker (no pun intended) bent but necromantic in nature (they think). It is known he may have a connection to ghosts and spirits. But no one knows who trained him, or why he does what he does (like playing himself off as a psychic detective to mortals.). He doesnt correspond much with other magic users, though this could be due to hew newness on the mystical scene, but it is known that he takes a hard stand against anyone who screws around with magic and spiritual power in his city.

Magical Trinkets:
Over time Nolan has collected a number of trinkets with mystical properties. They tend to offer minor, if important, effects but rarely can solve problems outrights. An example is a bracelet that lets it's wearer pass through solid objects but the bracelet itself /can't/ pass through.

The Dark:
The Dark the abstract shadow of our world where souls and spirits actually exist physically, the filter which keeps these entities unseen by the living, and the veil which separates our world from those beyond like The Afterlife(s), The Astral Plane and the Nevernever. Most souls are judged immediately following death and only pass through The Dark on the way to their afterlife, but some get stuck there for unknown reasons. These are what we call, in the real world, Ghosts. The Dark is also where most Spirits form and exist, born of the collection of abstract thoughts and emotions and concepts from the real world. Demons and Angels and other spiritual entities live with one foot in the Dark and use it as a stepping stone from their respective existences into our own.

A dim and shadowy place much like the unseen realm of The lord of the RIngs one sees when they wear the One RIng, the Dark is where spiritual and thaumaturgic energies are rippling currents and where spirits, ghosts and other invisible entities are visible. The real world projects itself into The Dark, with living people being ghostly ephemeral shadows haloed by their living auras, and buildings and landmarks appear strangely twisted or wholly replaced with other landmarks that existed before them if not somehow merged; . Basically the real world is a blurry memory within The Dark. Entities in The Dark usually cannot be seen or heard of felt by the living world, but sometimes an entity gains enough power (or is insane enough to ignore the rules) to manifest to the living.

The Dark is Nolan's anchor, his domain, where he draws much of his power. He can physically enter The Dark, becoing a ghost to the real world, and use it to travel great distances or, sometimes, use it as a stepping stone himself to 'Other places'.

The Deadwatch:

Perhaps Nolan's most important magical item, The Deadwatch is an item given to him by the ghostly thief-mage Crumble, his mentor. A 1966 Bulova Snorkel Oceanographer Dive Watch known for near perfect timing, it was a must-have for many a criminal; Especially when countdowns were concerned. This watch, though, was enchanted by Crumble to aid in his crimes. Powered by the trapped soul of one of Crumble's rivals, when activated it would swathe the wearer in a dark costume (formed of ectoplasm) which was bulletproof against medium caliber rounds and allowed the wearer to have peak human reflexes and strength for up to 666 seconds (when the knob was pushed). The magic didn't REALLY make the wearer faster OR stronger, instead stripping the body of it's natural limitors and deadening pain. Once the effect wears off (or is deactivated) the pain/exhaustian returns and if used multiple times in a row without a night to recover, could actually kill Nolan. Nolan has re-enchanted the watch so the costume is now customized, having made a deal with the soul that powers it.

Addiction:
Before his stint in prison Nolan had been a junkie, using various narcotics to get away from his chronic pain and to supress teh worst of his abilities. With pain management therapy in prison, plus the help of his mentor in teh arts of meditation, he learned to control his pain (and the depression connected with hispower) to a managebale level with minimal amounts of legally /perscribed/ medications (of which he is definateoly addicted to but it is a controlled addiction) but he still has the taste in his mouth.. It may be only a matter of time before he gives in to the temptation.

Chronic Pain:
The same deformity that crippled his leg and arm also causes Nolan to live in varying degrees of Chronic pain. It is always present, though the level can change (from 4-8) on the 'Standardized' pain scale. Though familiaruty means he actally has a pretty high pain threshold, this does not mean he enjoys it at all. When the pain threshold rises to ABOVE unbearable levels for prolonged amounts of time he can become distracted and find it hard to concentrate.

Criminal Record:
Nolan has currently been paroled after 13 years in prison for Murder 2 and Possession of a Conrolled Substance. He also has a pre-prison rap sheet with various theft and drug related charges.

Crippled:
Nolan was born crippled, his right arm and leg slightly malformed and their nerves heavily damaged. He has about 75 percent use of his damaged hand, since it is the hand he learned to draw with, but his leg requires a brace and cane-crutch for him to be able to walk (at half normal speed). He /can/ run but it hurts him a lot and makes it harder to cast spells. When he uses the Deadwatch he can override his disability an pain for 666 seconds (11.1 minutes) at a time but afterwards he is almost useless.

Ghostridden:
Partly due to his affinity, partly due to the constant pain he lives in, he is like a psychic beacon and Ghosts and Spirits have a tendancy to follow Nolan around. Many of these are harmless, lost souls and curious spirit creatures just wanting to be noticed, but sometimes a more powerful entity (like poltergeist, angels, demons, ) take notice of him. Some see him as just a curiosity, while others see him as a threat because he has the ability to manipulate/excorcise them.

Gothams Child:
Nolan is truly Gotham;s child. He was conceived in Gotham. He died in Gotham even before he was born in Gotham and he was not just raised in its streets but /by/ its streets. He knows the sickness that pervades his city but he still loves her and wil fight for her. He is one of her champions and while sometimes he must leave her,, he will always return. He has dedicated his life to protecting her and her children from her nightmares and monsters, even if he must sometimes be one of those monsters himself. This is his pennance.

Secret Identity:
Nolan keeps his ability secret from the majority of the public, or hams it up a little to make people think he is a fraud, distracting them from the truth. Around other powered people he may let some of that act drop, but never all. And it is not out of the question that some other.. agencies.. may know or suspect he has abilities. Like Taskforce X or SHIELD some mystic organization. Good OR bad.

Skewed Morale Compass:
Nolan hates predators and wants to help people but he still has so much street at his heart. A life spent surviving by any means nessacary. Yes, he wants to be good but sometimes being bad is so fun. He has no problem stealing or commiting a crime if it to help someone. He will hurt the bad guys (if possible) when need be to save someone. And if he makes a bit of a profit to get the luxuries his life denied while helping someone, well hey..

The Dark Within:
There is a Darkness deep with Nolan, a place or lack thereof within his soul that is the opposite of light. He is constantly battling it, like he battles his pain and addiction, both of which sometimes weaken his resolve and ability to deny that darkness. It is a primal thing, not consciously evil in and of itself, but can push him to do things that definitely seem that way. It is his shadow soul, his dark reflection, that links him to The Dark. When he becomes Darkwatch, which he avoids when he can, he succumbs to that darkness within just a bit more.

Those-Who-Judge:

Strange abstract entities that could be angels, or demons, or something more primal. Manifestations of Judgement itself. They appear when a soul has somehow escaped cursory judgement immediately following death by their usual divine power (depending on their beliefs), appearing as whatever unconscious manifestation represents judgement to them when they are caught. Most mid to lower level angels and demons, or their other religion equivalent, are wary of them for even they are unsure of who they truly represnt, their gods or something beyond that.. They usually ignore anyone who they are not judge but one or more seem to notice Nolan and sometimes they send him to do tasks for them. Nolan cannot deny them but at the same time sometimes he can call upon them when he has captured rogue souls to pass the Final Judgement they initially escaped. Those-Who-Watch usually ignore Spirits and other supernatural entities.
