Quote
"The reality is that told houses that were build a hundred years ago were built by actual craftsmen, people who were the best in the world at what they did. The little nuances in the woodwork, the framing of the doors, the built in nooks, the windows, all had been done by smart, talented people, and I quickly found that uncovering those details and all of that character made the house more inviting and more attractive and more alive." - Joanna Gaines

Description:

Almost average height. Almost average weight. Short brown hair and brown eyes. With those features listed, one would assume that Joan was an average looking girl. And they'd be correct. While Joan will sometimes dabble in makeup or wear something nice once in awhile. Her appearance is mostly of a no-nonsense approach. Her hair is long enough that tucking it behind her ears is still an option but short enough that she doesn't have to worry about it getting caught in things. The majority of her clothing favors function over fashion and for the most part, what you see is what you get.

And yet, when she turns her head a certain way or flashes a bit of an impish grin, that's when she shines.

History

History:

  • Joan was born in Milton, MA to Norma Blanchard Fuller-Wright (an Architect) and Philip Theodore Wright (History Professor). College educated and reasonably well off in their chosen professions, their comfortable lifestyle afforded them the time to focus more on raising their only daughter. They were very involved with her studies and took great delight when she excelled in school.

    * Her parents were very encouraging with her interests and often times would try to find ways to make her interests beneficial to her in the long run. When Joan showed signs of interest in building things, they introduced Joan to LEGOs. When she showed signs of interest in actual buildings, they'd take her to open houses and making day trips on the weekend to tour nearby historical buildings that allowed tours. Often times her mother would point out architectural features and give a brief explanation to them while her father would share tidbits of a historical relevance. When Joan was old enough, her mom would allow for her to (safely) observe certain aspects of construction projects. During the summer months, they would enroll her in various types of summer classes and camps, such as woodworking camp, construction camp, and architecture and design camp.

    * On Joan's 14th birthday, her dad gave her the 2007 version of the LEGO Millennium Falcon (which he managed to track down). It was 5,000+ pieces of LEGO building fun and she was ecstatic. She was almost done when she decided to take a break and accidentally knocked it off the table, causing for it to break apart when it fell on the floor. Before she was done cursing, the pieces joined back together to where they once were. This was a bit surprising for her AND her parents. After grounding her for the language being used, her parents had a decision to make and well, instead of being upset, they decided to view the NON-verbal surprise as a gift in the making and encouraged her to practice her newfound ability. They were cautious with the approach and initially had her practice with a lot of LEGOs first to get the fine motor skills down before expanding to other materials. Joan didn't complain as she ended up getting a LOT of LEGOs in the process.

    * Right before Joan was to start high school, Norma is offered a substantial increase in pay to justify moving the entire family to New York. Philip ends up getting a position at Gotham University where he provides both a combination of remote education courses and on campus coursework. With the advancements in public transportation the trip to Gotham for his on campus days is manageable.

    * Upon reaching the bare minimum age for volunteering (16) and getting permission from her parents, Joan ends up volunteering in the summertime with Habitat for Humanity. With her accumulated time in volunteer work and her exceptional grades, she managed to earn several academic related scholarships by the time she graduated high school.

    * With most of her education covered, She starts pursing an education at Columbia University's college of Arts and Sciences. During the Summers off, she would find herself teaming up with her mom and like minded persons flipping houses as a way of keeping the skills up.

    * During her time there, she completed a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Design and Architecture and achieved a Masters of the Arts in Historical and Sustainable Architecture.

    * Upon graduating, she started back up with flipping houses as a side business while her day job is working as an architect at a local firm to ensure a more consistent revenue stream. That is, until something better comes along.

Personality

Personality:

Friendly - While she prefers someone else having the spotlight and not being the center of attention, she is outgoing enough to start a conversation with strangers in order to get to know them or to make people feel welcome
Hands On - Joan has been a hands on person most of her life. It relaxes her, and there's nothing more rewarding than knowing you physically created or saved something. That said, she prefers fixing things the normal way over using her powers. But in a pinch where the situation calls for it, she'll use it.
LEGO Addict - Everyone has their vices and for Joan, it is LEGOs. If there is a newly released building kit out there, she's likely to drop what she's doing to track it down, and buy it. She also likes to design her own items out of LEGOs and then assemble them. It's gotten to a point where she has a ROOM in her home dedicated to them.
Loves History - It's not that the item is old that interests Joan, it's the stories that come with it. Older architecture is a testament to the visual preferences of those long ago, features that are considered odd now may have had a true purpose back then and the visual reminder may be enough to keep people from forgetting.
Organized - Everything has a place and with a lot of her education consisting of being able to tell people where things go. You bet that also applies to things in her personal life.
Supportive - She's happy with other persons getting the spotlight and just doing her own personal magic in the background.

Abilities

Put It Together:
Joan has the ability to put disassembled things back together by just commanding the pieces to return back to where they were. They will stay together.

Sphere of Influence is within four corporate stories (approx. 60 feet) This also applies to the pieces she needs to put back in place. They need to be within range. (So no bricks floating across the ocean to get to a building site.)

Speed Control - She has worked with her powers to control the speed in which things come together. Without thinking about it, the average velocity the pieces are moving is 20 mph. Which, is survivable upon being hit but, with multiple items, still problematic and hurtful. With enough concentration she can slow and speed up the process but that will require more focus and as a consequence she won't be able to move as much. The fastest she's moved a piece is the speed of a softball throw. (approx. 43 mph) The slowest is easily described as hitting the pause button.

Weight Limitations - the most she can move weight wise is the equivalent of a corporate structure H-Beam and the bolts needed to secure them into place. (approx. 10 tons), now this weight requirement can be broken down amongst several smaller things.

Item limitations - She's never really figured out the maximum amount of items she can move but there is a universal truth. The more she tries to do in one go, the more prone to mistakes the assembly is at risk for. i.e.: things missing their mark, collisions, missing pieces. Generally the easiest way to work around this is to work on one section at a time and pace herself.

Item limitations - She can't restore parts that are burnt up or disintegrated. If a house was caught in a fire and the flames were put out. The portions that were burnt away would still be missing. She could reassemble what's left. Like a 10,000 piece puzzle with that one hole in the center just teasing you.

Bit by bit - She does not restore entire structures in one go. They are in stages. Like with assembling a LEGO structure, you don't pick up all the pieces at once and slam them together. You grab what is needed in the order it is needed in. Now, if you're not focusing, you may grab the wrong piece or end up missing a step. That piece you neglected is not going to get where it needs to be and may just end up getting dropped elsewhere in the process.

It takes some knowledge - The key reason why her ability extends towards buildings is because that's what she's spent most of her life learning about. She has a large amount of knowledge to how buildings are put together. She can tell from looking at the structure where the weak points are and focus her attention on those areas first. IF she takes the time to learn the overall concept of how something is built, then she can put it back together. So SHIELD? Unless you want to give her a tutorial on Helicarrier construction, you're on your own. Tony? Same deal with your suits.

Mentally exhausting - There are a lot of moving parts, there's a lot of concentration involved, analysis of the situation going on. That is quite taxing on the mental state and as such, she needs to take breaks from time to time to avoid overdoing it. She is not going to be doing this and having a thought provoking conversation with the people she's with. It's not personal. She's just trying to keep the building from falling down on your head.

Sorry, no meat puzzles - This does not work on the living or body tissue because... eww.

NOTHING is perfect - If a structure is not properly fastened with the necessary parts, Once Joan stops focusing on that structure, those weak points will become weak again. This may not mean an entire structural collapse if just enough of it did get the proper parts in place. (Kind of like chain mail. Maybe a ring or five falls out but the others remain. It's not pretty but somewhat serviceable.) But. There still will be need to INSPECT AND REPAIR.

Take It Apart:
If Joan used her ability to reassemble something, she can use her ability again to essentially disassemble the pieces. This can be useful in times where a quick fix was needed in order to prevent catastrophe but now that time is on their side, they can go back and do things right.

If she never reassembled something with her powers, she can't disassemble it.

Take the Long Way Around:

If Joan happens to be standing in the way of where a part needs to go, the part will essentially orbit around Joan until it can get to where it needs to go. People within a 7.5 foot range of her are within her protective area of influence and would be safe.

Note this is a 7.5 foot radius with Joan as the center point which gives people a sphere approximately a 15 foot diameter to work with. It's not a perfect sphere because Joan is not sphere shaped but you get the idea.

Skills

All Things Lego:
If one could describe Joan's abilities with building with LEGOS it would be terrifying. When not studying or practicing the real thing, she is often playing with LEGOs. Sometimes following the instructions, and other times coming with designs of her own. Oftentimes of other known buildings that haven't had a set dedicated to them yet

Architecture:
Joan has a BA in Urban Design & Architecture Studies and a MA in Historical & Sustainable Architecture. Along with that, one of her parents is an Architect. She also has the benefit of being exposed to this field from an early age. If it is building related, she has likely received some form of education on it.

Business:
With her knowledge spread out over several fields of construction with her ability to anchor it down to a set plan. It makes it easy for her to communicate what needs to be done to those working with her. This is especially good considering she runs a side business of flipping homes and will need to delegate responsibility to others. Her planning skill also helps with managing the financial aspects of the business to make sure that the flips are successful costs wise as well.

Education:
When it comes to studies, Joan is no slouch. Also she has the added benefit of two college educated parents, one of which an educator himself, who had an active interest in her upbringing. She did well in school, enough to the point where scholarships and grants paid for most of her college education. She's also got some degrees she can actually use when it comes to architecture and restoration.

Good With Her Hands:
Along with the book knowledge and having her own mother to share in her own knowledge, Joan has had plenty of opportunities to learn the finer details of construction. From chaperoned visitations of active sites to participating in the act of flipping houses, she's done electrical work, she's done plumbing, she's done wood work, she's done painting, she's done masonry, and she's even done landscaping. If it was necessary to restore a building structure or home site, she's done it by hand. And honestly she prefers restoration this way. When it comes to assembling things, she is good at what she does.

Planning:

When it comes to buildings, lot of what Joan does is planned out. While some instances will cause for her to react immediately, when she's given the time, she prefers to take a much more deliberate approach with her actions and powers usage. What NEEDs to be done? When do they need to be done? What can be put off until later? These are important things to figure out in a lot of situations. How to use her powers. How to repair things. How to run her side business. What to put into the building plans for others to follow...

Resources

Financial Strength:
She may have finished her master's recently but with very little in terms of student debt, a home already provided, and the well off nature of her parents, she is not in want of money.

House:
Oh my gosh how on earth did she manage this? Well, her mom has ways of finding these places. This house was a textbook definition of fixer upper when the family acquired it. And being Joan likes fixing things. That makes it her dream home for now. Joan is gradually trying to get this place back to its former glory. And who knows? Maybe in a few months, that third bedroom will be rentable.

Lego Room:
What does one do with an extra room? For Joan, it houses an extensive Lego collection. Bins are sorted out by color and a few of the collectors building kits are fully assembled and on display on the top shelves. That durn Millennium Falcon is there too.

Side Business:
Ok so what does an architect by day do in their off time? Well, other than playing with LEGOs, Joan also spends her time flipping houses. While she mainly does it for the enjoyment factor, more often than not, the value of the house after the flip exceeds the financial investment she puts into it.

Supportive Parents:

College educated, Still together, Financially well off with some stable roots, Joan was already fortunate starting off. But the supportive nature of her parents became more apparent as they eventually found out about her ability and actually encouraged her to practice them. So long as it didn't interfere with her studies of course. If she still needs a pep talk, they're not that far away.

Weaknesses

Ooh Shiny!:
If LEGO releases a really awesome building kit or she just happens to comes across a really interesting looking building she hasn't seen before and she's allowed inside, she's likely to drop whatever she was currently doing to focus on checking that out.

Parents:
Joan's parents are awesome. They are perfectly suited for her and she loves them a lot. And while they may not live together in the same city, they are pretty close. She probably would not do well if something were to happen to them.

Power Limitations:

There are a lot. Please see the abilities section for more information.
