Profile

Thermophysicist Caitlin Snow was the youngest scientist ever appointed to S.T.A.R. LABS Arctic Outpost, and created a thermodynamic perpetual motion machine shortly after her arrival. The machine was sabotaged by N.E.S.T. operatives and Caitlin thrown into its matrix to die. Now Snow is known as Killer Frost, a creature so co-mingled with thermodynamic conversion that she must absorb heat to survive. Furious at her plight and desperate for a cure, Killer Frost has embraced her drive to drain the heat from those unlucky enough to find her. A criminal by plight, it is up to Caitlin to contend with her desires for better or worse.

Desc:

Dr. Caitlin Snow doesn't get to pretend she's not Killer Frost.

Even with her powers under control, the color's left her flesh and hair. She's a 5'4 human popsicle in the best of times, slim and athletic, the sort you'd call 'spunky' if it weren't for all of the reasons to call her something else. Hair the color of newfallen snow cascades over her half-shorn scalp in a shoulder-length tumble. Eyes the color of ice on a winter morning peer malevolently out from that sprawling hang, above a pixie face and full-lipped mouth set in an everpresent snarl. Before 'the accident' she'd adapted some rebellious alterations - a nose stud, dark lipstick, the 'do. After it, she doesn't have a choice about the lip color, the nose ring's practically fused to her face, and the hair's stopped growing.

Caitlin wears a heavy hooded expedition jacket, a khaki green trimmed in insulating white fuzz. Beneath it she's likely to wear a scarf and black turtlenecked sweater. Black, fingerless leather gloves adorn her hands, while she wears a pair of fasionably tight leather pants and insulated leggings beneath. Combat foots finish the outfit out, black, steel-toed, and ankle-tied.

History

History:
Caitlin Snow was born to a perfectly normal family in a perfectly normal district of Pittsburgh. There was never any doubt about Caitlin's aptitude for the sciences or education in general, and she skipped several grades early on. Younger than her peers and prone to being teased for her looks (blonde hair, blue eyes, pampered white single daughter, Frozen's just come out in theatres? LIFE = OVER), Caitlin developed a headstrong personality and rebellious fashion sense in school. She was able to apply this same attitude to her studies, and attacked school with a fanaticism reserved for the truly desperate - or at least, the truly friendless. She was an odd duck even in the beginning.

Accepted to Hudson University at the age of sixteen, Caitlin would spend the next several years pursuing advanced degrees in first engineering, and then thermophysics. Finally in an environment enabling her to thrive, Caitlin's accolades in her college years were numerous and well-known: of note, she assisted in creating insulation matrices used in many modern extreme survival fabrics, contributed to the design of a heat regulator used in LexCorp advanced weaponry, and developed a hospital bed better able to contribute to the regulation of patient temperatures. She graduated at the age of 25 with a dual Ph.D., and was immediately scouted by S.T.A.R. LABS as a celebrity hire, a first for the organization and a headliner in certain nerdy magazine circles.

Capitalizing on the opportunity to persuade investors to contribute their funds, S.T.A.R. assigned "Dr. Caitlin Snow" to the coldest place they could, engaging in both horrific coincidental staff placement and the continuation of a lethal line of chill-themed female scientist supervillains. Oops.

Caitlin would spend the next year of her life managing the staff at Arctic Circle Outpost #76, a sleepy research outpost that was home to Louise Lincoln's Self-Sustainin Thermodynamic Ultraconductor Engine (S.T.U.), a device intended to create perpetual motion through subverting the second law of thermodynamics*. The staff of Outpost #76 were a sleepy batch of doctors, good-natured but lazy - defeated by the complexity of the device. As such Caitlin took it upon herself to review Lincoln's old notes, modify this schematic, accomodate for years past in updating components with newer models. Problems became solutions, broken circuits complete, and bit by bit the S.T.U. became a roaring success.

*Basically, you can't use energy to effect change without losing a little bit of that energy to the universe. In the end, everything evens out.

December 25th, 2025 was the day Caitlin Snow created perpetual motion. It was also the day she died.

Her co-workers had worked for H.I.V.E., an organization with several major stakes held in modern-day energy companies. Their purpose? To prevent the S.T.U. from completion. Caitlin's headstrong genius posed a problem that they resolved by throwing Dr. Snow *into* the S.T.U. after she had completed it. While she screamed at them to free her, they turned it on, subjecting Caitlin to a myriad of endlessly self-cycling energy fluxes. Snow had designed the S.T.U. and knew how to stop it - she pulled coolant wires from within the machine's chambers, subjecting herself and the energy flux to extraordinarily low temperatures, unregulated by flow. The machine failed catastrophically.

Within it, Killer Frost resided, a Dr. Caitlin Snow encased in permafrost, eyes crystallized behind ice. She was on them in an instant, her touch frigid, able to literally pull their heat from them, to subvert *their* energy into... ice. Those that didn't feed Frost died to her primal command of the elements. Outpost #76 became a frigid grave.

History2:

Killer Frost made her way across the arctic wastes, without heat and starving, able to get by on settlements she passed, animals she encountered in the tundra. From there, she found a cargo vessel headed for New York, alone, furious, besieged by a hunger she can never sate. Her primal rage has denied her the chance to think, and the swath of crime and violence she unleashed upon the city was contained time and again by superheroes of all stripe and trade. She has made a name for herself as a villain-for-hire, in and out of various high-security prisons. Most recently she was imprisoned in Belle Reve Penitentiary, though there has been quite a bit of talk about her expedited parole program...

Personality

Personality:

Caitlin Snow is an idealist, eager to show the world how intelligent she is, but ever hopeful to do good where she can. She's got a bit of a rebellious streak shown in her attire and attitude, but this does nothing to undermine her studious nature and respect for her peers. Really, she's just great. Ducky. Favorite Food: Grilled Cheese & Dr. Pepper.

She is none of those things while she's starving for the heat of your living body. Furious at her pain and hunger, every negative feeling Snow's ever felt is magnified into horrific hatred for her fellow man. The optimist is in there somewhere, for certain, but she's seeing everything through iced-over glasses. Her coworkers betrayed her, *mankind* betrayed her when it destroyed her work on a hope for the future. She takes heat from those who would use it for things less great than her own intentions. She takes heat from those who squander theirs in the name of fleeting joys. She wants it because you're not using it for what you could be - you don't even know what you HAVE.

She wants to find a cure. She doesn't deserve this. She's in agony. All of her frustration and outlook can be subdued if she sees a means towards curing her condition, and to that end she will work with other criminals if she's promised the right kind of pay - research funds, some sort of equipment to help her work, a really warm Pop-Tart, the list goes on.

A central theme to Killer Frost's narrative is her fight against her nature, and whether or not Caitlin Snow will find the support she needs to battle the crushing negativity of her condition. Right now, it's not looking very likely.

Abilities

Cryogenesis:
Caitlin's ability to draw heat from living creatures feeds her ravenous hunger, but only to the point that it is slaked for her immediate survival. Excess must be vented into the environment, and this typically takes the form of spontaneous ice generation. Caitlin's ice is the result of a biological process and should be considered as much a part of her body as a shake's shed skin, but is subject to the same physics as mundane ice insofar as durability and melting point is concerned.

Within the scope of her stores, Caitlin is capable of doing whatever she likes with her ice - the shape, density, and quality of the ice are affected only by the focus she gives to a given construction. Killer Frost has created martial weapons with her ice, has utilized icicles as projectiles, and has created domes of sheer ice for use as protective fields. With enough focus, fuel, and time, Caitlin is able to prepare ornate and lasting ice effects - she has constructed small 'lairs' of ice, and has encased her entire body in ice to protect against particularly telegraphed attacks.

Her abilities do not just extend to ice and its manipulation. Caitlin is able to generate sub-zero gusts of wind and blasts of pure freezing energy, resulting in the spotaneous flash-freezing of entire rooms and groups of attackers.

Entropic Body:
Caitlin has ceased to create her own heat and is sustained purely on her absorption of the heat of others. Her body is constantly devouring itself, a characteristic best visualized in the partially-frozen state of her physical form. While Caitlin can move, speak, and emote as any living human, she is corpselike at best and a demonlike ice monstrosity at her worst. With her affliction well contained and her mental state calm, Caitlin appears closest to her living likeness, albeit with snow-white hair and disquieting white eyes. When emotionally unstable or otherwise under duress, Caitlin is covered in a layer of rime and permafrost, encased in dense ice that lends her the appearance of a creature out of fables, and a voice you'd associate with Inuit ghost tales.

Entropic Heart:
The same feat of thermophysics intended to give perpetual motion to the world is responsible for Caitlin's current, cursed form. Ironically, her -metabolism- has been subverted such that she is constantly consuming heat, be it from within her body or from without. This constitutes both a colossal strength and considerable weakness - Killer Frost directly absorbs any and all heat energy with the sort of efficiency a solar panel envies. She'll take your heat beams, flamethrowers, sun-bathing, and plasma blasts - it's all a drop in the bucket, in the end. Hell, set Caitlin on the sun. She'll drink it up, until it's gone.

Caitlin's heat absorption is limited to touch, and chiefly used to sustain her vitality and abilities. She is capable of draining the heat from any living being provided they have a standard warm-blooded metabolism. There are canon examples hinting that a creature's objective strength garners a larger 'meal', which directly effects her ability to manifest her other abilities. While Caitlin can subsist on rats and smaller animals to survive, she must consume a standard adult human's energy to maintain her superpowered state for an average day of villainy.

Genius:
Caitlin is a bona-fide genius and boasts a double-doctorate as of turning 25. She is a near-unparalleled prodigy in the fields of thermophysics and engineering, and enjoys applying her considerable intellect to working through unworkable scenarios. While this intelligence is unfortunately held hostage by her state of emotional distress, a calm Caitlin is an intellectual force to be reckoned with.

Heat Sense:
Caitlin is able to sense heat sources nearby her, with enough sensitivity to determine the number of participants in a given fistfight. This ability extends to some hundred feet diameter around her person, and ignores most conventional barriers - insulated material is an exception.

Ice Skating:
Control over ice and chill lends Caitlin some tricks in getting around. While she is no flier, Caitlin is able to effectively generate ice to speed her movement over flat surfaces, and has been seen exhibiting the same kind of ice-gliding typically attributed to Iceman.

Pain Tolerance:

With the state of her body, Caitlin is practically unable to feel pain save that inflicted by her condition. Whlle conventional weaponry has every effect one might imagine, she is not likely to fall prey to any distractions offered by non-incapacitating damage. Injuries will still take their toll, damage will still inhibit her ability to move, but she won't have the decency to whine about it.

Skills

Combat:
Her ferocious instinct and two years of villaining have provided Killer Frost with a fair understanding of how best to utilize the cryokinetic abilities at her disposal in addition to her own underlying physical fitness. While she is hardly a superhuman martial-artist, her tenacity and creativity with her ice-based weaponry provide a valuable asset in close-quarters combat.

Engineering:
Practical machinery and the actual mechanics of energy translating into force and effect are Caitlin's domain. She designs and utilizes complex machines with relative ease, a skill that translates well into the application of unfamiliar tech in spontaneous scenarios. Caitlin is an excellent resource for the development of high-tech gadgetry and armor.

Self-Preservation:
While Caitlin may tell herself she wants to find a cure and resolve her condition for good, she is a powerfully adept survivalist and will *NOT* be willingly placed in a position that puts her at a disadvantage. She is ever on the lookout for a source of sustenance, ever on the lookout for a way out, and ever on the lookout for herself above all else. Ultimately it boils down to willpower and self-pity - call it bluster all you like, but Caitlin Snow refuses to die as this... thing.

Thermodynamics:

When it comes to heat transfer, energy gradients, and the role of work in physical scenarios, Caitlin Snow numbers among the elite in its explanation and implementation. She is credited with the study and application of several modern insulative and conductive technologies. With a few more years of research and development under her belt, Caitlin might have been able to chair her own tech company. Unfortunately, she half-died. Currently, she is working on more efficient ways to preserve the dissipation of energy to entropic forces.

Resources

Mercenary:
Nobody likes Killer Frost, but she doesn't necesssarily like anybody back. That's just the way it works when you're in the villain business, and favors are favors. Caitlin has called upon other henchpeople and supervillains for the occasional favor, done the occasional favor in turn, and established herself as a reasonably honorable bad guy. If she needs a little help, she knows how to get it.

On Call:
In keeping with Mercenary, Killer Frost is on ALL of the short-lists. She's a superpowered merc who takes jobs for reasonable prices and is straightforward in her dealings. No pride, no crap, no bluster, just business. She's usually the first point of contact for a given gig, especially if the pay includes something that helps her find herself a cure for her condition. It's an unfortunate preoccupation that criminal masterminds are all too keen to exploit.

Safe Houses:

It's no Batcave, but Caitlin has created her own safehouses within Pittsburgh and New York, typically abandoned spaces above city utility tunnels carrying steam conduits and the like. Too warm for human habitation, her presence goes unseen while she's given a chance to take in the ambient steam and collect herself. It's hardly ideal - the environment's downright scummy - but it's home, and it gives her a way to lie low. Until somebody finds her.

Weaknesses

Appearance:
Caitlin will never pass as a normal human woman again, no matter how she tries. In her calmest, most satiated state she appears as a frostbitten body made animate, a White Walker out of Game of Thrones, all white-eyed, white-haired, and blue-fleshed. She's as capable of emoting as anybody else, and in her more lucid moments wouldn't mind a conversation about propulsion tech or the latest blockbuster movie... she just doesn't get the chance to do it. People can't seem to meet her eyes.

Cold-Blooded:
Caitlin needs to absorb heat to live, by touch. She must reach out and rob something living of its vital energy, and experiences gnawing hunger and excruciating pain when this need is denied. Conversely, Caitlin's powers are enormously limited unless she is 'eating' healthy meals, as it is this mode of sustenance that powers her cryokinesis. While her exact limits are unknown and seem prone to the memory of the storyteller, they seem to generally go something like this:

An average Killer Frost is draining a human (to death!) every day, which enables her to sustain an average blight of chill-related evils across a given town. In particularly overblown or dramatic encounters, Killer Frost may need to 'top up', be it from a bystander or the hero she's fighting.

To survive, Caitlin must get by on what she can find. In a daze, unable to function, plodding foot after foot, Caitlin made it through extremely harsh climates on 2-3 small arctic animals a day, and can likely subsist on a similar amount of heat daily. Without a consistent source of food, Caitlin will grow dazed at first, and then increasingly mindlessly hungry until she's little more than a beast. This is something she is working on.

Fragile:
Without the ice, the instinct, the bloodthirst, Killer Frost will always just sort of be a nerd in a monster suit. Caught off-guard, she's just as easily knocked out or knocked on her rear as anybody else. She's been K.O.ed by thrown objects, sucker punches, and all manner of otherwise surprising attacks.

Her Own Medicine:
Caitlin cannot create her own heat and must survive on an exogenous source of heat she can touch. This is unquestioned. While she grows 'hungry' over time when exposed to ambient, livable temperatures, this effect is quickened if Caitlin is exposed to cooler temperatures. She typically wears insulating clothing to ameliorate this effect when possible.

At an estimated 15 minutes of exposure:
At wintry temperatures (20-40 degrees F), Killer Frost is grumpy and prone to aches and dizzy spells.
At freezing temperatures (0-20 degrees F), Killer Frost's powers are weakened, she is in pain, and actively confused.
At sub-zero temperatures, Killer Frost is powerless, starving, and dazed. Continued exposure to this temperature will place her in a coma.

NOTE: This effect does NOT apply to direct exposure to Killer Frost's own cryokinetic ability, though collateral effects from the same can harm her. Example: If Killer Frost freezes a pool, she won't be sapped by her own ice, but if you dunk her into the frigid waters beneath she's in trouble.

Permafrost:

In her WORST state, Caitlin is a MONSTER. Her body is encapsulated in hoarfrost, craggy and the color of the bitter tundra. Her eyes are rimed in ice, her hair a frozen flame, her fingers talons, her elbows-- you get it. She makes children scream when she's hungry or furious, and this only serves to further her resolve to distance herself from the people who let her down in the first place.
