Profile

Traci 13 is a young magick user, usually found around the streets of Metropolis, though she's showed up in other cities fairly commonly, as well. She knows her stuff and is an expert with urban magick, and she's had her share of scuffles in the magick department. She's the daughter of the infamous Doctor Thirteen, a man who, up until recent years, made huge sums of money and gained fame by debunking paranormal 'professionals', paranormal activities, and other supernatural events. While it's not exactly common knowledge, some may recognize her as the young teenage girl raised by Ralph and Sue Dibny.

Description

Traci 13 stands out in a crowd, marches to her own drummer, insert your own cliche here. She's different, simple enough. Petite and well-built, if compact, she's 5'2", but somehow doesn't seem that short, her carriage that of someone supremely comfortable in their own skin. Her painfully stylish, (currently) undercut hair changes hues from day to day, from Gothic black to orange ombre to shimmering pink and purple, with many stops in between. Her upward tilting eyes have a habit of changing colors, too, although they're always expressive, large and shining under perfectly sculpted brows. She has a small, but not-upturned nose, nice cheekbones, the whole pretty hapa (or, half-Asian) girl bit. She wears make-up with a seasoned professional's expertise, eyeliner applied, lipstick hued within an inch of its life, generally slaying it. She smokes, probably too much, and tends to pick up the accent of whatever city she happens to be in - side effect of her particular set of skills.

Her style ranges from funky to edgy, but almost always casual. She favors t-shirts with vintage or brand aesthetics, usually snug and showing a bit of her belly. Sometimes, she adds jackets or scarves for a bit of flavor. She's more than fond of jewelry, her ears and tongue pierced, and her fingers are often adorned with rings. Her skin isn't immune either, with tattoos that don't seem entirely stable, changing from hour to hour and sometimes even seeming to shift along the surface of her skin if you look too hard. She's more prone to pants than skirts, but it isn't a strict thing by any means - whatever she thinks looks good on a given day. Whatever outfit she's wearing, you can bet it's styled to the nines and looks damned good.

History

Traci grew up under the tutelage of her father, the legendary occult investigator, Terrance Thirteen, known professionally as Doctor Thirteen. If she has a proper family name, he's never bothered to tell her. While her father often opposed or even disliked magick, he'd fallen in love with an Asian sorceress -- Meihui Lan, a Homo Magi -- and his daughter inherited, along with her looks, her mother's magickal abilities. Since he was often away, Traci learned magick at her mother's knee largely without his interference, although she showed her own specific predilection for using the world around her and drawing upon its power. When Traci was on the cusp of her teens, though, her mother was killed in a magickal mishap. Her father, devastated by the loss of his wife, forbid Traci to practice further, for fear he'd lose her, too.

Of course, being a teenager, Traci ignored what her father said and just continued to study in secret. This was made largely easier because her father has often been absent for her life, chasing down magickal rabbit holes and sometimes even getting swept off to other dimensions. So, Traci was then raised by Sue and Ralph Dibny, instead. It was through them she learned her morals and life values, but eventually felt that, as much as she loved and appreciated what the Dibny's had done for her, she had to make it on her own. Determined, she took her pet iguana Leroy with her and moved into the Suicide Slums of Metropolis.

It was then, on her own, that Traci began to realize she could tap into the power of the cities, and even though she had promised her father she would not get into magick, she began to feel the compulsion, and with that compulsion, the need to honor her mother -- maybe even find out what happened to her. She began studying the occult with a fervor, and expanding, testing, her magical limits while doing such things as curing her father who suffered from some kind of poltergeist-parasite that was eating at his heart for the loss of his wife, stealing the Staff of Arion from a dark magic user to prevent a magical entity from trying to kill Sue Dibny, and other adventures.

Traci now seeks to make the world better, to find out what happened to her mother, and become the best sorceress she can be.

Personality

Other people might describe her as spunky, but she would probably give those people a death stare, an obscene gesture or some combination of the two. She's spirited, smart, and trendsettingly edgy in her personal style. Like most magicians, she has a strong intellectual side, obsessed with experimenting with new magicks and always interested in being on the cutting edge. She likes to be an innovator and takes a certain amount of pride in not being a stereotypical, old-fashioned witch - not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not who she is. She's not afraid of a fight, but she's not aggressive or violent by nature. She likes her creature comforts and generally likes to have fun all around - she's definitely not an ascetic or prone to losing herself in meditation. Her magick is material magick, magick of the world, and she's constantly immersing herself in life as part of her practice.

Abilities

FORCE FIELDS
Traci is able to create a malleable force field around herself that is mobile and will move with her. She can either make the force field very strong, or have it be as thin as to simply block out poison gas or preserve oxygen. The force field can additionally be strengthened by putting chains down to lock it into place and bolstering the amount of physical force it can withstand. At its strongest and with all the right things falling into place, if Traci is in the middle of a city of the power of a Metropolis or NYC, fully concentrating, she could withstand a few blows of up to 50 tons of pressure/force. Most often, however, this can stave off things such as a single concussive blast, a shower of bullets, or quite a few blows from someone physically superior to human strength like Luke Cage or a pumped-up Bane before the spell's power is exhausted and the force field fails.

GENERAL MAGIC
Of course, Traci is not limited to solely Urban Magick. Being a sorceress, she certainly has the capability to cast almost any spell out there. This is not limitless, however and, as with any power source, she can run out of energy. The more spells she casts in succession (or the more power used), the higher the toll it can begin to take on her body. A list of some of these other spells include, but is not limited to:

  • Magick Blasts: These blasts are capable of enough power to tear through (and apart) concrete.
  • Teleportation: She can teleport herself anywhere in the world to non-specific locations. In other words, she can teleport to NYC, but not -specifically- into Avenger's HQ. She can do this approx. 3 times in a row before it begins to tax her body. She can also bring 1-2 people with her for a 1-2 time trip.
  • Astral Projection: Traci can move into the astral plane and interact, for good or ill, with objects on that plane. As is typical with this, her physical body remains inert while she does this. She can remain here for a long while, but using other magic will exhaust her and send her back into her body far more quickly.
  • Purification: Traci can banish unwanted spirits (poltergeists/demons, etc...) from people they are possessing, places, or items. These things are usually a longer spell, and sometimes may require rituals.
  • Summoning: She can summon simple items to her, such as a change of clothes, small personal effects, other such items. This requires minimal magick.
  • Elemental Magick: Traci can utilize the elements for her purposes. The smaller the effect, the quicker it can be cast. These effects can be strong, but will be localized to a single area. i.e, she can create a huge elemental effect up to a large building sized area (1-2 levels), but not an entire city block, or the entire expanse of said building.
  • Cantrips: Traci can cast these types of small magick spells that are usually designed to mislead, or trick the senses. Things like creating an illusionary clone of herself to walk around a corner and disappear, changing her hair color, or outward appearance to blend in (or someone else's). These spells only last as long as Traci wants them to, the shorter the timeframe, the less power she needs to put into it from herself.

PSYCHIC LINK
Traci shares a psychic link with Leroy, her pet iguana. She can see what he has recently seen, and also read his thoughts. She is also able to communicate with him through this means, which she often uses while audibly talking to him. Through this link, Leroy can get Traci's thoughts as well as her intent..

RITUALISM
Traci is very, very, very good at ritualistic magick. While, to some degree, ritualism is more of a skill than an ability -- (and, with some rituals, any nutjob can perform them if they're in the right place, at the right time, and use the right items -- for Traci it's almost an innate ability and talent. An inborn awareness on how to do the thing, and do the thing -right-. She's good.

She's good at summoning entities, at creating wards and other protection spells, at imbuing objects with a battery of power for 'on the go' needs, and other sorts of magick that cannot be simply cast by spells alone. Due to the nature of her own personal beliefs, her occult knowledge, and self-training and experimentation, she can do almost anything she needs to, as long as she knows the ritual itself, has the proper components, and time to cast it. Generally, she prefers to do this alone as she views this as something more sacred and ceremonial.

TRANSFORMATION
Traci is able to transform her pet iguana and familiar, Leroy, into a gigantic dragon-like creature. He will still maintain the form of an iguana, just one large enough to kill someone by literally stepping on them, or chewing them apart in his mouth with but a few gulps.

URBAN MAGIC
As a true member of the Homo Magi race, Traci's special gift is the ability to utilize urban magick/street magick. She is able to tap into the latent magick of any city to give her access to numerous amounts of abilities that correlate to the urban environment. The power of her general magick is also in proportion to the type of the city she is in, and which side of that city she is in (i.e., the more developed/larger, the more powerful the magick). These abilities include, but aren't limited to:

  • Magickal Senses: Traci's mystical awareness allows her to sense the presence of magickal artifacts, spells, and energies. She can see spirits, demons, and other phenomena hidden from the senses of the mundane. She can see people's auras, often allowing her to read their moods, gather basic informative details, histories, and, sometimes, even fates. If a being is mystically empowered in some way, be they witch, vampire, god, or devil, she can usually identify and sense their ability at a glance. She can usually follow a person's aura traits to track a person down and/or trail them. Additionally, this ability can be used to see things which are invisible on the present plane of existence she herself is in -- to clarify, she cannot see into alternate realities or different realms. This allows her to see even people using invisibility powers (such as Sue Storm), cloaked people/creatures/items, etc... or anything else hidden to the human (or mechanical) eye. She can even cast her senses outward beyond her body to see around corners or at a distance within the confines of a given city.
  • Dowsing/Psychometry: Traci can stand a point within a city and locate specific objects and people within. She must have an item of that person, or object, to do this. She has used this, in the past, to find fragments of a magical rock that had exploded over the city -- she was able to discern where each and every piece, from the largest to smallest, was located so it could be put back together and seal in the escaped demons that the rock had bound. Furthermore, she can also transfer this knowledge to someone else's mind.
  • Divination/Fate Sense: Traci is particularly gifted at the act of divination or fortune telling. She can use the traditional methods such as tea and tarot cards quite adeptly. She's also got some notable urban variations, such as finding hidden meanings in the newspaper want ads or seeing the future in puddles of rain on the street. As with all fortune-telling, her prophecies tend to be symbolic, vague or difficult to decipher, but they can provide important clues and warnings. She also has an uncanny sense of the power of Fate itself, usually able to tell when someone, something, or someplace is marked by Events to Come (in the big, capital letter sense).

Skills

FOCUSED MIND
A vital skill that experience and need has taught Traci is how to focus mentally and concentrate in order to make the most of her spells. To this end, she often does not need to recite words to her spells and can cast them silently, provided she is focused enough. She may augment her spells by using various components to either boost the spells' effect to one degree or another, or make the casting quicker, but this isn't a requirement. However, she /does/ have to concentrate.

She has gotten to the point now where she can multi-task. While weaving spells in her mind, she is able to carry on a conversation, attempting to deceive and distract, or do simple physical tasks (run, walk, swim, jump) and maintain the spells in her mind without fail.

Her concentration is by no means perfect yet, but it's damned good. Having been through many intensely stressful circumstances where her life, or the lives of others, were in jeopardy, she's learned and grown from such encounters.

INNOVATIVE
Traci's urban magick style is, in many ways, a modern phenomena and even largely her own invention. While much of magick is practiced as part of following ancient learning and tradition, Traci's shown a particular talent for improvisation and innovation. Even if she doesn't have an effect practiced or trained, she has a skill of coming up with new things, flying by the seat of her pants, and creating magick out of the energies and materials of the world around her. This spectacular talent is, of course, also unreliable and sometimes impossible to duplicate, born of circumstance and sometimes resulting in some spectacular failures. But, that's how one learns. Without risk, there's no reward.

LANGUAGES
Traci can read and speak about 6 arcane languages fluently, and knows a smattering of a 2 or 3 others; an impressive feat for a young woman her age and shows the measure of devotion she has to learning about her power, and the magick around her. While there are many she still needs to learn or finish learning, she has a very good foundation for it, and the motivation and drive to do so.

On a more mundane level, Traci also speaks Japanese.

OCCULT
Traci's been schooled in magick and occultism since she was a very little girl, by both her mother and father. Doctor 13 is one of the greatest occult experts in the world, even if he isn't strictly a magician himself, while her mother was an accomplished sorceress. As a result of these facts, Traci knows quite a bit about the occult.

She is quite possibly the most learned sorceress of her age, and has a certain gift or knack for understanding these sorts of secrets once she learns them. Every single spell that Traci casts, she knows where her power is coming from, and how to tap into that power to make the spell as potent as it can be for her.

She has a wide knowledge of various magickal lore and learning, different styles of magick and a wide-ranging understanding of other worlds, be they spirit or material. She knows a faerie from a fairy, a vampire from a zombie, a voudon from a Cultist of Kali. However, Traci certainly doesn't know *everything*. There is still a vast amount of knowledge she has limited or incomplete knowledge of -- such as magic of other realities, realms, or beings -- but, she is always seeking more knowledge.

Despite her relative youth, she has wisdom well beyond her years. Because of what happened to her mother, she has taken her role, and heritage, with a burning fervor, delving into occult books, lore, and history with the obsessive nature of a hungry academic. Traci not only has access to her mother's entire library that she'd previously collected, but Traci herself has accumulated a fair number of books as well, and is always seeking to add more to her collection to further her knowledge.

She fully believes that, in order to be a true practitioner of magick, one must learn it from the inside out.

RESOURCEFUL
When your identity relies on you being a mage, you tend to be pretty resourceful. Traci knows how to take advantage of her environment, especially in the city. She knows one can't prepare for everything (and she's about as good as it gets at that), but she can use what the area around her offers for components to use a quicker spell if need be, or the right location to do so. She's been in enough tight spots before she knows that it's all about keeping one's head, and using what one has at hand to stay alive. And she's pretty damned good at that -- a modern-day magickal MacGyver, if you will.

STYLE

Traci has a strong and unique personal sense of style. The magick that flows through her even reflects that -- her hair color and general appearance can change from day to day, reflecting her mood through her aesthetics and her dress. She's always up on the latest fashions and trends, even if it's just so she can defy them. She loves crafting new looks and believes significantly in the power and even deep meaning to be found in aesthetics. She's also a fairly skilled seamstress and has a budding interest in fashion design.

Resources

DOCTOR 13
Traci's father is the legendary Doctor 13, an occultist, investigator and debunker of vast renown and respect. While not a practitioner of magick himself, Doctor 13 has an incredible, encyclopedic understanding of the occult and knows more about the weird, hidden, and forgotten nature of the world than almost anyone. Unfortunately, he doesn't approve of his daughter's magick or her adventuring, but, if she can get a hold of him and if pressed, he can be a valuable resource that she can call on in times of need. In addition, just having his name and reputation attached to her opens a lot of doors -- even if they don't know her yet, they may know her father or, at the very least, not want to get on his bad side.

FAMILIAL WEALTH
Traci's father is Terry Thirteen, both a well known professor and also professional debunker of 'fake' magicians, paranormal activities, and other supernatural events. Her mother was a rather successful Homo Magi of some repute and fame within the true magickal community -- an odd pairing, to be sure.

However, this odd pairing was quite rich, and Traci's father owns the Doomsbury mansion. While nowhere on the scale of a Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, or Lex Luthor amounts of wealth, the Thirteens are very comfortable multi-millionaires due to their success in many fields.

As a result, Traci can get access to some of this if she needs it. The mansion is a place she can always go back to if she needs and, while her father might be a touch frugal with the family money (especially when it comes to Traci's magick use), he certainly isn't about to let her suffer if she's in a pinch.

HOMO MAGI
Traci is Homo Magi, a particular offshoot of the human race naturally inclined to channel and use magick. Homo Magi are a rare breed and tend to recognize one another -- it's also a mark of power that is respected in certain circles. Above and beyond that, it means that the practice of magick is very particularly bound up in Traci's very essence and so binding her powers or taking her magick entirely away from her is extraordinarily difficult.

LEROY
Leroy is both Traci's pet iguana, and her familiar -- his presence makes Traci's magickal abilities easier to use. Her pet since childhood, she's developed a psychic link with Leroy, allowing her to see through his eyes, hear what he hears, observe what he's seen, learn what he thinks, and generally guide him psychically from a distance. He likes to ride on Traci's shoulder, or the top of her head and has some measure of actual intelligence because he is her familiar.

She's also developed a defensive spell which can temporarily transform Leroy into a massive, SUV sized dragon-beast that's more than capable of biting someone's head off, essentially a giant lizard that can terrorize others, large and heavy enough to both step on people and eat them, and even breathe fire with the power of a size-equivalent flamethrower. Because she loves Leroy, though, Traci isn't likely to use him as a weapon and only would transform him in cases of self-defense or an emergency. She can also provide him wings that allow her to fly riding on his back, though, which is kinda fun.

STAFF OF ARION

An Atlantean artifact that Doctor 13 confiscated from a rogue sorcerer, Traci has since re-confiscated and adapted the Staff for her own use. In appearance, it's a relatively simple ebony staff, seemingly made of an almost volcanic glass. Traci has learned to charge the Staff with mystickal energies, essentially using it as as magick battery, allowing her to carry magick outside of the city and channel forces through it that she doesn't have access to normally. When charged, however, the Staff has a covetous side effect, making other magick users want to possess, take, or even simply touch the Staff. This fascination can be irritating, to say the least, and Traci doesn't tend to use the Staff unless she truly feels she needs it.

Weaknesses

CONCENTRATION
Using magick requires focus and concentration. Whatever it is that Traci casts needs some kind of component -- they can be words, specific movements, sigils, or chants, etc. However, even if the spell she's seeking to cast has no obvious components, she still needs to concentrate on it. This means that, excepting with spells she's exceedingly practiced with, she can do one simple task, such as walking, talking in a simple conversation, but she needs to otherwise entirely focus on the spell. Too many distractions or anything that makes it difficult for her to focus will make magick difficult or even impossible for Traci in certain circumstances and can, at the very least, make her flub or have things go awry.

FLESH & BONES
In danger or superheroic situations, Traci is entirely dependent on her magickal abilities. She has no hand-to-hand or weapons training of any sort and isn't particularly physically formidable. She could throw a punch, in a pinch, but anybody with a lick of skill would probably duck it, except out of pure surprise.

Traci's a pretty damn good sorceress/magician, and can sling spells with the best of them in the right circumstances. But she is still a human being. All she has to protect herself is her magick. While she can protect herself with that, if she can neither get it going or is caught off guard, she's just as squishy as any other person out there, and it's just as easy to hurt, or even kill her.

INEXACT SCIENCE
Magick isn't a science (no matter what Dad says). Outcomes aren't always certain, circumstances change, and, generally speaking, things go wrong. How magick works is often dependent on a great many factors, not all of which are always in a witch's control. Things blow up in your face sometimes, have unintended consequences, or sometimes just fizzle out without the potency you'd expect. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

OVERBEARING PARENT
Traci's father doesn't approve of her adventuring or using magick. While she's an adult now, he'll still do his best to impede, discourage, and generally try talk her out of getting involved with things. He'll be willing to help if her back is against the wall, but usually with strings attached, and he's more than happy to undermine her attempts at becoming a hero.

REBEL HEART
Traci just doesn't like being told what to do. She's anti-authority and tends to push "grown-ups" and the like back at arm's length (even if she is technically a grown-up now). Telling her not to do something is the surest way to get her to do it and she isn't prone to listening to people cautioning or warning her away from things.

URBAN DEPENDENCY
The strength and power of Traci's magic, for the most part, is directly tied and related to the size of and section of any given city. The smaller the city, the more slummy the section, the less magic she has to draw from and the more she has to draw from her own internal 'battery', which of course can quickly run out. This is not only applicable to the amount of power (thus, number of spells) she can cast but also to the strength and magnitude of those spells.

That isn't to say in the wilderness her spells are putzy and barely effective, they're still effective. Simply where she might be in the wilderness she could make a force field that could withstand only a few blows from Bane, or only have a tracer spell that works for an hour or two - whereas in a city like NYC in all the right conditions she might be able to withstand several rounds of a flurry of blows from Bane and have several tracer spells running at once.

This does not apply to ritualistic magic, but rather 'on the fly' or quick-cast spells. Ritualistic magic comes from the ritual itself more than the person and is more knowledge, than power-based.

Because of this, while Traci isn't afraid or hesitant to leave the city, it's often where she prefers to be and is the most comfortable.

WEAR & TEAR
Using too much magickal power, too quickly, will strain Traci's body and begin to tear it apart. An example of this would be if she teleported in quick succession through several major cities in the world. Even though she can tap into each city's power, and each city is a major city in the world, there is only so much magick she can put out at any given time, her magick is not unlimited. The Staff of Arion can aid her greatly with this kind of limitation, but she doesn't always keep it on her for various reasons.

At any rate, if she gets to this point, she'll start bleeding first out her nose, then her eyes, and ears, before finally collapsing into unconsciousness. Depending on the toll taken, this could be severe. Sometimes, when the need is great, it's hard to stop when you're so close. Traci can be blind to this, and risk severe harm to herself if put in such a situation of great peril and need.
