Profile

Phoebe Marie Beacon always had a hero. Her adoptive father, who fell fighting fires in the Narrows. Her Aikido teacher who implored her to find balance, and even the gentle stand-offish nature of her history teacher, who instilled in her a love of history, folklore, and the Unknown, and her adoptive mother, who carries on without the love of her life. One of the lucky kids in the Gotham Child Protective Services, she was fostered and then adopted by the Beacons, and grew up in the Nantwich borough of Gotham. Growing up on the tals of heroes, she uses her vibrant optimism to show others that there is still Hope. Able to tap into The Light as a magical conduit, Phoebe has learned she has the ability to heal ohers, dispell sickness, and can briefly channel the light into staff or sticks -- with effort. Keeping her power secret as she wrestles with balancing schoolwork and her budding powers, how long can she stay hidden, especially when the cities may need Light and Hope more than ever?

Description:

This is not an imposing figure, this young woman stands at a neat 167cm, and has a slender, but athletic form. She appears to be in late high school or early college, typically wearing casual jeans and tees or sweatshirts unless an event calls for more formal attire. Her clothes fit well, but probably come from Target rather than any fancy boutiques.

Her long, black hair is kept braided, save for a couple of curls at her forehead and about her ears

Her dark eyes are usually bright and full of ideas and thoughts, always looking around her environment with casual curiosity. She has freckles across her cheeks, a nose that might be described as 'button', and a slightly pointed chin. Her full lips are typically smiling serenely.

History

History 1:
Phoebe Beacon's biological parents were unknown. She was first entered into the Gotham Child and Family Services docket approximately at two years of age after surrender by a man who claimed that a pair of people dropped her on his doorstep, said they would be back in an hour -- and he didn't want to be responsible for her, so he did the most understandable thing and dropped her off at a police station in her stroller, wearing overalls and a T-shirt with the word PHOEBE written on it in marker on her sleeve. She had no identification, she matched no reports of a missing child, and without any further information she was processed into the foster care system when no one came forward to claim her. 'Baby Phoebe' as a minor headline in the Gotham News that week.

From the police station, she was talkative, responsive, showed curiosity and friendliness and little knowledge of strangers and would immediately stick her hand in someone's face and introduce herself as "BeeBee." Adaptable and bright, it was easy to fall in love with her dark eyes and infectious smile, which is how the Beacons took her into foster.

Charles Beacon, a firefighter/EMT who had been one of the first to examine Beebee, was known to keep a tight ship at home and at the station. He instilled in Phoebe a sense of belonging, immediately setting her up in the spare room, and a desire to help others, letting her learn how to use a stethescope to listen to his heart and setting her up with her own dirt patch, which she excitedly attempted to plant cheerios to grow donuts -- in which he planted a plum tree and tied donuts to with fishing line. From her adoptive mother she found a love of houseplants and history -- Caroline taught the subject at the middle school level -- and their family was as close as any could be. By the time she started kindergarten, Phoebe was legally Phoebe Marie Beacon.

History 2:
Phoebe grew up in relative comfort, in a middle-class family as an only child (though she had cousins up-state on her mom's side), and through-out school proved to be an above-average student with bright and burning curiosity who wanted to try everything. She took dance for a while, and found it not to her liking and switched to field hockey in late grade school, found it too competitive and so switched to aikido, for the sake of self-defense by the time she was in fifth grade at a studio where Chuck Beacon also went. Easily the best father-daughter bonding experience they could have picked, between the evolution and wisdom shared by the teacher (who fostered Phoebe's budding interest in bonsai), and the crossing of cultures, as Phoebe moved up in rank her dad was there every step of the way, until sophomore year of high school, when tragedy struck the Beacons.

A fire in The Narrows claimed Charles Beacon's life, leaving Caroline and Phoebe. Remembered for his smile, for his kindness and insistence on Doing the Right Thing, the article 'Heroic Beacon Lost in Blaze' featured a candid image of Phoebe fighting back tears, clutching a folded flag to her chest.

Phoebe kept strong, if not for her own sake, then for her mother's. The following months were a blur of winter turning into muddy spring, and to keep her mind off her dad's passing, Phoebe took up running errands for her older neighbors for pocket money. During one such errand, she happened to take a turn down the wrong alley, and came across a group in the process of riffling through an injured man's belongings. Spotting the high schooler, and assuming easy pickings, the group descended on their prize, cornering her against a barricade.

And in desperation, Phoebe held her hands out, and the resulting crisis opened her to The Light. A brilliant blast of magical energy erupted from her hands, driving off the surprised brigands, and Phoebe returned to aid the injured man, who had fallen unconscious trying to get back to the street. Tending to him, Phoebe found his wounds closing, and her own wakefulness fading.

She struggled away, returning home with a high fever, and passed out in Caroline Beacon's arms, sleeping exhaustedly for two days.

Determining it wasn't mono, or any other illness, the instance was attributed to hallucination and stress, lack of sleep, and over spring break from school Phoebe was put on strict guidelines to eat and sleep as much as she needed.

It was tending to her neglected plants that Phoebe found her powers were not hallucination. Watering brought them back faster, diseased leaves and damage from mites were reversed. Her dad's struggling plum tree blossomed vibrantly as she tended to it -- and she found she had to strike a balance between healing and her own energy, careful not to exhaust herself.

She opted for homeschooling the rest of her sophomore year, afraid of how others would take her powers. She got tested for the X-Gene, and was found to be negative. She didn't know where this power came from, but she trained herself, using her plants, to control better her abilities, and in the beginning of her junior year she rejoined her old Aikido studio, intent on training her body as well as her mind.

History 3:

She progressed on her own, transferring discipline and focus from Aikido into learning more bonsai, and doubling her efforts on controlling her power as she entered back into high school. Again, she was the mom friend, the one others turned to for help and advice, and everyone just felt so good after being around her -- after all, while Phoebe could tamp down on her power, she could never turn it all the way off. A friend's basketball ankle twist recovered early enough to let them play in the city championship. Her friends got over their colds faster, especially when she stopped by with tea and ginger cookies. She attributed her own health to just clean living, hiding her power the best she could.

Graduation came and went, and she enrolled in the undeclared program at Gotham University, intent on bringing her focus -- and maybe, just maybe, finding others who were like her.

Her dad did always tell her that the Helpers were worth finding.

Personality

Personality:

Phoebe Rosemary Beacon strives to be an optimist in a city where optimism and light isn't easy to come by. Inspired by her heroic adoptive father and the heroes who have come before, Phoebe aspires to be the one filled with Hope, a light in the darkness. She has a strong sense of purpose, though she's not quite sure how to go about the whole 'magically inclined super person' yet. She is keenly aware that she has a tendency to not mind herself, and thus tends to be a little aloof, but generally friendly. She's precisely the sort of person who would give up her seat on the bus for someone else. She truly believes that in the face of great adversity, people of different backgrounds can and will unite for the Greater Good -- but that doesn't mean she is all sunshine and roses. As a gardener, she knows that roses have to have thorns, too.

She is pro-mutant, and believes everyone has a place at the table. Science and technology should be able to coexist with magic (she does love her phone, after all), and is ruthless when it comes to defending others. She's not afraid to Kill 'em with Kindness, and is the first to donate time or what money or materials she can.

She also strives to strike that balance in her life she feels has been missing since her dad passed, filling in their bonding time with training in aikido, or in her powers, or tending their garden by her lonesome now. She has a soft spot for crime fighters, do-gooders, and The Helpers she so sorely wants to acknowledge, those who are the first line of defense -- though she's leery of police.

She's also a curious person, equally about the metaphysical and the visible world around her.

Abilities

Accelerated Healing:
Thanks to her connection with The Light, Phoebe's injuries heal twice as quickly as normal. She can recover fully from sprains within a few days, cuts and lacerations within a week depending on the depth of the cut, and broken bones knit faster, healing within three weeks instead of four to six. Close proximity to her, especially within range of touch, enables her to share this ability with others, but puts a drain on her ability to heal herself. This ability is always on, and requires her to be living. Unlike other healing factors, once her light is extinguished it cannot be rekindled, and thus should she die (sudden, severe trauma, bleeding out) her body will not heal itself. This ability does not enable limbs to be re-attached if removed, but will speed up healing if surgically re-attached.

Healing Touch:
By focusing and touching another living plant, creature, or person enables Phoebe to heal minor to middling injuries sustained within the last week quickly, with sprains, cuts and minor trauma in a matter of seconds and major trauma like broken bones or critical injuries in a matter of minutes, purifying deadly poisons and ridding others of diseases contracted within the week. Missing limbs, established injuries, old scars and progressed diseases cannot be healed in this fashion, nor can creatures who ordinarily would be injured by holy powers. Phoebe must be awake and choosing to use this power.

Natural Talent:
A natural born magic user, Phoebe's powers stem from her connection to The Light, an amorphous 'generally good' energy centered around healing, holiness and purification. Phoebe is unaware that the source of her powers comes from a holy, magical connection to The Light. She has a natural knack for magic and it use, but at this time he is untrained and still very much raw -- which is why she shines like a beacon if people know how to look.

The Light Staff:

Phoebe has the ability to generate a focused beam of Light that he can use as a staff or pair of escrima-stick like weapons for a period of twenty-five minutes at a time. The staff, like her focused powers, relies on her physical touch and thus cannot be thrown, and will disappear if she drops it or it is knocked out of her hand. After twenty-five minutes, she must let her full power rest (including her accelerated healing) for five minutes, or longer if she has sustained significant injuries. The staff lights up in a brilliant blue-white light and emits sunlight-like light, and can cause damage to any thing that is considered sensitive to thus (i.e. vampires, demons, some varieties of ghost, as consented).

Skills

Kitchen Witchery:
There is a joke among her friends that Phoebe is a kitchen witch, because she always makes the best foods for when you're sick. She's got a collection of medicinal cookbooks to help disguise the fact that her visiting and touch is what's making her friends get better, but she's become a decent cook at traditional foods from around the globe, and grows the majority of the herbs she uses herself.

Aikido:
Phoebe is skilled at using aikido for self-defense against one or two attackers. She can defend with joint locks and tosses, or with her staff, dodge blows by ducking or tripping up her opponents, but strives not to cause injury that her passive healing ability would have to focus on. She trains intensely twice a week at a commercial studio in Gotham focusing on self-defense.

Gardening:
Phoebe is a knowledgeable and talented gardener, enjoys houseplants, and is a student of bonsai as a relaxing pastime. Her small back yard is full of medicinal and food plants, she tends her houseplants with skill, and her room is full of bonsai trees, both for display and that she is nursing back to health.

History and Folklore:
Phoebe is a voracious reader, collects books with an emphasis on history, folklore and legendry and finds comfort in the ideas and fears that unite people across the world. One of the best ways to befriend her is to bring her a book she hasn't come across in English or Japanese about folklore, history or mythology.

Languages:
Other than English, Phoebe speaks Japanese conversationally and knows enough Kanji and kana to translate modern Japanese and English.

Weaponry:

Having trained in Aikido for self defense, Phoebe is capable of using a staff in order to defend herself, whether it be an incidental item like a broomstick or an actuall staff she feels comfortable using it to aid in joint locks and tossing her opponents. Phoebe has also began training in the use of throwing knives, and is comfortable throwing at a distance of around ten feet/three meters to a six-inch target. Longer distances present problems.

Resources

Armor:
Phoebe works with the Batman Family to protect Gotham, and has assumed the name Sparrowhawk, after a small bird of prey. In this guise she has access to a suit designed by Tim Drake:

Cowl: Fire reistant double stitched synthetic kevlar, computer chips and special lenses in the domino that are polarized to protect against flash attacks. Cowl has infra-red, night vision, ultraviolet lenses and computerized 'HeadsUp Display' for displaying communications and ambient information along with GPS and tracking device information once a bug is activated. An earbud and mic are tied into the domino and are attached to the Bat-Clan and Outsiders. The suite includes a voice modulator application used to mask her voice. The cowl's shoulder-level is re-enforced to protect her neck from attacks, enabling her greater flexibility in her neck.

Cape:Fire resistant double stitched cloth. Has small, rigid plate inserts to provide protection.

Armor: Health monitoring system, lightweight tripple weave fire, bullet and puncture resistant Kevlar. Additional plates and re-enforcement are built in to the elbows, knuckles and knees to provide better opportunity to deal blows if needed. Boots are re-enforced with steel to provide protection.

Left Gauntlet: Under-wrist grapple line able to withstand one ton of pressure. Metal plates in fingers can be charged for a single taser-like attack. Flip-down cutting blade from elbow to wrist can be used to cut through rope and most cloth.

Right Gauntlet: Metal plates in fingers can be charged for a single taser-like attack. Flip-down cutting blade from elbow to wrist can be used to cut through rope and most cloth.

Home Life:
Phoebe has a stable home life with her adoptive mother, Caroline Beacon, who is supportive of her daughter's helpfulness and schooling. Her home enables her to grow most of her own plants for cooking as well as have a refuge away from others for recovery.

Pack:
Phoebe works with the Batman Family to protect Gotham, and has assumed the name Sparrowhawk, after a small bird of prey. Rather than a utility belt, she carries in a variety of pouches in a pack on her back:

Eighteen smoke pellets
First aid kit (bandages, disinfectant, anti-venom, injectable adrenaline)
Eight small tracking devices
Forensics Kit
Two Video Capture Devices
Four replacement grapple lines
Four throwing knives
Spare socks

Trust Fund:

Phoebe has a (very) modest trust fund set up for her from her dad's life insurance.

Weaknesses

Always On:
Although she can tamp down and limit her power, The Light is always on, passively healing her and keeping her from getting sick. This results in the general feeling of her being pleasant to be around (unless Light energy or powers cause someone harm, in which case it's an unpleasant feeling), and anyone who can sense magic can sense her, and she registers magically as 'non-human' due to the amount of The Light coming through her -- she is, indeed, a Beacon.

Exhaustive Use:
Phoebe's powers are not limitless, and rapidly healing others or calling on her solid light weaponry will tire her out quickly. She can only keep her solid light weaponry going for fifteen minutes at a time, less if she is recovering from injuries.

Secret Identity:

Phoebe keeps her abilities a secret from everyone, even her mother. Although sure she isn't a mutant, she's not a hundred percent sure what she is -- and that could get her, her mother, or her friends hurt if the Wrong People found out.
