Profile

Brought back a millennium to the 21st century with other fellow Legionnaires, Invisible Kid is going to make the best of... well, not necessarily a bad situation, but certainly an odd one. He'll be as glad to get back to his own time as any of his teammates, but until then, there's still heroing (and science!) to do.

Description

Lyle Norg is normal enough looking, physically. About 5'6", athletically lean, typical brown eyes and a mop of typically brown hair. The uniform is a black bodysuit with a white 'i' from the belt upward, the dot in the middle of his chest. There's also a black headband to keep the aforementioned mop of hair out of his eyes.

History

History
Lyle Norg was just your typical, average, boy supergenius -- just the sort of thing to get you noticed by Earthgov's intelligence service, even when still an early teen. It was while in service that he invented his invisibility serum, and shortly thereafter 'retired' to join the Legion instead.

Not being especially combat-oriented, he made his marks mainly in the lab, inventing (or co-inventing, to hear Brainy tell it) the Flight Ring, and in the field, co-founding with the Legion Espionage Squad.

Now, there was a time it was thought he'd been killed by Validus (and it was a near enough thing); the truth is, retiring from EarthGov Intelligence is not always permanent, and during the period of his 'death' he was engaged in some extremely deep-cover work. If asked about it, all he will say is, "I could tell you, but then I'd have to eat you. And I'm not Bismollian so it would be bad for both of us."

Back from the dead (or at least deep cover), he's perfectly happy to take up his old role in the Legion again.

Personality

Personality
Lyle is generally a friendly and outgoing sort -- whether that's to counterbalance having to be stealthy when invisible, or to drive Brainy up a wall, or he just is that way, who can say?

Add that to the fact that he never really got over the sense of wonder that leads young people into science, and he can sometimes come across as more youthful than the calendar says -- not childish or immature, but certainly less intense than some of his teammates can be.

That said, he's dedicated to his team, and to any mission he might be on... in which case his attitude may also be part coping mechanism.

And his hobby -- nearly a skill, almost a superpower -- is teasing Brainiac 5. He takes Brainy's retaliation with good humor... and really, it more or less completely fails to conceal a genuine respect for and friendship with his genius teammate. But you'll probably never hear either one of them admit that in public.

Abilities

Invisibility
He'd hardly be the Invisible Kid without it. He can go completely invisible, or make parts of himself invisible, or even go invisible in layers -- hair, skin, muscle -- which simplifies Halloween costuming no end.

He can make small objects (and of course his costume) invisible with him as a matter of course. However, making someone else invisible along with him is a great strain and only done in an emergency.

Skills

Chemistry
Lyle has a particular genius for chemistry, with particular concentrations in biochemistry and xenochemistry -- he is, after all, responsible for the invisibility serum that granted him his main power. Turn him loose in a lab and he's as much at home as Querl is, at least in that field.

Espionage
Co-founder of the Legion Espionage Squad with Chameleon Boy, Lyle has the usual sneaky tricks up his sleeve -- intelligence gathering, counterintelligence measures, even a little lockpicking, a little electronic countermeasures, a little system hacking, that sort of thing. It comes in handy sometimes.

Inventor
Lyle has a knack for gadgeteering, thinking sideways to a problem so he can occasionally come up with solutions and applications that even Brainiac 5 didn't see -- case in point, the Legion Flight Rings. He doesn't always bother with a complete understanding of the theory: getting it to work is the main thing, dotting the conceptual i's and crossing the mathematical t's is Greeny's job.

Stealth

Since his invisibility doesn't completely extend to sound, Lyle's gotten good at moving silently, almost to the point where he can sneak up on someone without bothering to go invisible first.

Resources

Legion Flight Ring
The origin of the Flight Ring is a matter of opinion. Officially, they're the result of a joint effort between Brainiac 5 and Lyle himself. Unofficially... well. Some say Brainy came up with a complete theory and fobbed off the "trivial" engineering onto Lyle. Some say Brainy came up with a complete theory that only worked on paper and it took Lyle's creativity to make it work in the real world. And some say Brainy invented the Valorium of which they're made, made his notes, and set the sample aside--at which point Lyle picked it up and went "Hmmm...." This last theory is most popular with Lyle himself.

However they came about, they're definitive Legion equipment. As the name suggests, they grant flight to team members who cannot otherwise fly on their own. They also contain a distress beacon.

Okay, Brainy did modify rings to survive the powers of their users, so he did have *something* to do with making them....

Legion Gear
Besides the ubiquitous Flight Ring, there are a number of other bits of Legion gear generally available to team members. Two of the more significant items are:

  • The Transuit, functionally a transparent environment suit designed to protect the wearer from a hostile environment -- not from attack, but from vacuum, hostile atmospheres, submersion, etc. It's stored in a small capsule sewn into the costume; it will auto-deploy upon exposure to a hostile environment, or it can be deliberately triggered by the wearer.
  • The Omnicom, essentially a souped-up palmtop computer/general sensor device, good for taking readings, notes and recordings, basic analysis, etc.

Weaknesses

Acrophobia
Lyle is mildly acrophobic -- ironic for the inventor of the Flight Ring. It won't prevent him from flying, but he will take unnecessary care, and if confronted with a great height unexpectedly, it will give him pause.

Invisible Isn't Undetectable
While invisible, Lyle can still be located by radar, hypersensitive hearing, telepaths, or being covered in dust, paint or the like.

Uncertain Future
Due to the nature of the character, the future that 'he knows' may not turn out to be the future that everyone else experiences. Time travel is a tricky thing and this is a necessary weakness for anyone who goes back in time.
