Quote
"We like to talk big, Vampires do. 'I'm going to destroy the world.' It's just tough guy talk. Struttin' around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I like this world. You've got... dog racing, Manchester United, and you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. With a real... passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Goodbye, Piccadilly. Farewell, Leicester bloody Square. You know what I'm saying?"

Profile

Spike is a famous and widely-feared vampire that was turned in 1880. He is well-known, by humans and demons alike, for having faced and killed two Slayers, and tortured his victims with railroad spikes, from which his moniker of "Spike" is rumoured to have derived. His reputation for evil and bloodshed is second only to that of his grandsire, Angelus. Spike travelled to Blüdhaven in 2023, accompanied by Drusilla. Although he quickly established himself as one of Buffy Summers' most dangerous foes, he has been forced into multiple uneasy alliances with her and her team, the Scooby Gang. After he was captured and experimented upon by the Initiative, he has been rendered unable to harm humans by a cerebral microchip that was implanted in his brain. He would like it removed.

Description:

Spike sports a punk look, which strongly resembles that of English musician Billy Idol. In point of fact, Spike inspired the rock musician's look. His naturally blond hair has been dyed a platinum variety and combedback, slick with some kind of product, though it might just be grease. It's hard to tell. Back in the 1940's, he dyed it black. He has a scar on his left eyebrow in the shape of a 'Y'. His nails are painted black.

Spike usually wears a black leather duster coat, which he took from the second of two Slayers he's killed. Underneath that, he favours black t-shirts or v-neck shirts with black denim, or leather pants, usually with heavy boots. Sometimes he likes to wear a red silk button shirt.

He has a pale complexion, stands almost 1.8 metres tall, probably weights close to 80 kg, has blue eyes, the aforementioned platinum blond hair, and looks to be in his mid thirties. Objectively, most would call him handsome. When he speaks, it is with a cockney accent, though one that has waned a bit in recent years.

History

History:
William Pratt was born 20 August 1850 in London, England, to James and Anne Pratt. Anne would sing "Early One Morning" to him throughout his childhood. By 1880, he had grown into a gentleman who lived alone with his ailing mother. A poet by trade, he enjoyed a certain amount of economic comfort, but he struggled to make a place for himself in London's high society. He earned himself the nickname "William the Bloody" because his poetry was so "bloody awful". That nickname would follow him into his future as a vampire, where it would be applied with far deadlier connotations.

After being rejected by Cecily Addams, William literally collided with Angelus, Darla, and Drusilla. The latter followed him into an alleyway, where she found him in tears. She seduced and turned him. After being buried, reborn, and then crawling from the depths of his own make-shift grave, the pair revelled for days, draining many a human, and consuming copious amounts of alcohol. Eventually, he returned to his mother's residence, where a live-in servant foolishly invited him home.

His devotion to his mother had remained with him even after becoming a vampire. William sired her so that she could join in his afterlife. But, the creature he sired saw was not his mother. In the end, he staked her because he could not bear to see her twisted in such a way. He was traumatised from this experience, latering writing a poem about it entitled the "Wanton Folly of Me Mum".

Putting his mother's death out of his mind, he was euphoric with his newfound abilities and his vampiric family. At first, he idolised Angelus, but he was always quick to defend Drusilla when her good name was besmirched. He treated her with unyielding loyalty. Alas, his loyalty was not reciprocated. Walking in on her having sex with Angelus, who had only slept with her in order to hurt and "desensitise" him, began the rivalry that has carried on to this day.

Shortly thereafter, he took on the nom de guerre "Spike" after a detractor from his human days had exclaimed that he would "have a railroad spike driven through" his head than listen to William's poetry. He adopted a working class North London accent, and embracing impulsiveness and violence in a bid to maintain Drusilla's affection. He even took part in criminal activities. And not the usual, murder and theft, but actual organised crime, which was, and still is, unusual for a vampire.

Developing an intense and all-consuming obsession with Slayers, he killed Xin Rong during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 China. She gave him a scar on his left eyebrow, which he still has over a century later. He was captured by Nazis during World War II, spent some time in prison for tax evasion in 1959, killed two members of the Watchers Council in 1963, and ate a hippy at Woodstock. He spent hte next several hours watching his hand move.

In 2000, he fought and killed Nikki Wood, a slayer in New York aboard a subway train. He stole her black leather duster, which he has continued to wear ever since. Sometime later, he was attacked by an angry mob in Prague, and Drusilla was severely tortured as a warning sign for other vampires to stay away from the city.

History2:

Spike brought Drusilla to Sunnydale in 2023 in the hopes that the Hellmouth's powerful energy would help to restore her strength. The presence of the Slayer made it an even more attractive retreat for Spike. He tracked her to the Bronze, a local nightclub, and observed her from afar. But his interest in her seemed more perverse than homicidal. He had killed two Slayers before, and hoped to make her a third, but she had an unusual advantage. She had her scoobies, and Angelus, or Angel as he liked to call himself these days, helping her.

His preoccupation with this Slayer, above all others, resulted in him losing Drusilla. She is so unlike any Slayer he had ever seen, and he had seen quite a few of them. You might say he was an expert on the subject, or as near as any vampire could be. But his life, or afterlife if you prefer, was about to be turned on its head.

After being captured by something called the Initiative, a secret government organisation dedicated to demon-fighting, and under the umbrella of S.H.I.E.L.D., not that Spike knows it, he was experimented upon. He was implanted with a cerebral microchip that renders him unable to willingly harm or attempt to harm humans without experiencing crippling pain.

In a way, the chip has become a surrogate soul. It forces him to consider the consequences of "right" and "wrong", with a literal punishment of physical pain looming over his head if he ever gets it wrong. Since it was installed, he's had to live off of pig's blood from the butcher and reluctantly turned to the Scooby Gang for help.

He has helped them on a number of occasions, and especially since he learned that he can hurt demons, and a few other creatures. Being able to fight... someone, anyone, has helped him get over his crippling depression. For a while there, he was close to staking himself. But now, he has a crypt in the Old Blüdhaven Cemetary, which he's furnished to his liking, he has friends... of a sort, and a purpose, even if he doesn't like it much. Someday, he'll get rid of that chip. He'll get back to his old life. He's been himself again. And then, then things are going to change.

Personality

Personality:
Buffy says, "Have you always been this big a pain in the ass?"
Spike says, "What can I tell you, baby? I've always been bad."

Spike is not your typical vampire. Most vampires would be offended by the human emotions he so often demonstrates, such as love, and most especially loyalty. He is a vampire, but he has retained much of his humanity. He's quite selfish, looking out for number one, but he has the capacity of extreme acts of selflessness. He may not have a soul, but he hasn't lost the ability to love. He cares for certain people. And he is honourable. He is a man of his word and he always pays his debts.

Spike believes strongly in monogamy, as he was devastated when Drusilla cheated on him with Angelus, the Immortal, and other various demons. Girl gets around. But Spike stuck with her for over a century. He thought that their love was eternal. He is a "fool for love" in every poetic sense of the term. Whether good or evil, his actions are most often movitated by his deep affections for someone. As he's often said, he might be "love's bitch", but at least he's "man enough to admit it".

Simply put, Spike is motivated by his passions. He doesn't believe in agonising over "good" and "evil" like some vampires who will remain nameless, (coughangelcough). He knows that he is too ambiguous for that. Most people are. And he'll never apologise, or try to defend, his actions as a vampire. He's lived more of his afterlife than he ever did in his previous life.

"But, uh, for a demon I never did think that much about the nature of evil. No. I just threw myself in. Thought it was a party. I liked the rush, I liked the crunch. Never did look back at the victims."

Notably, Spike has a true lust for violence and a love of brawling. He's become quite the thrill-seeker, and unlike Angelus, he became obsessed with fighting Slayers. He found such life-and-death battles to be quite therapeutic. Now that he has that blasted chip in his head, he's found that staking the occasional vampire has "put things into perspective" for him. He doesn't really care what he fights as long as he can fight.

Spike never did enjoy inflicting pain on others; he simply revelled in the "rush". He's also extremely impatient and can be quite emotional. He'll scream in rage and throw whatever's nearest to him when things don't go as planned. He's also prone to long-winded emotional rants, often blaming the situation on others until he's calmed down.

Despite his love for mindless destruction, he is in fact highly intelligent, and well educated. He's quite insightful and particularly analytic in regards to interpersonal relationships. He makes frequent references to literary works. And he has an impressive knowledge of magical rituals and items. Although a vampire, he hasn't stopped learning. As good as he is at reading people; he is utterly and completely susceptible to his own delusions when it comes to his own romantic entanglements.

Continued in '+gen Spike/Personality2'.

Personality2:

A student of history, Spike is ever ready to remind people who have failed to learn from it, as he once said "You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not goin' around saying 'I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it.' The history of the world is not people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story."

Spike often treats his vampiric nature as an inconvenience rather than an actual limitation. He drives in broad daylight with blacked-out windows, and regularly travels outside during the day, using a blanket for cover. He has a taste for normal food and drink, such as beer, whiskey, bourbon, cookies, chocolates, Bufflo wings, and has one of the most varied diets of any vampire in existence. He especially likes to add extra ingredients to his blood, like Weetabix for texture, and spices for flavour. He also smokes cigarettes. He might not be breathing, but he's still alive.

Abilities

Constitution:
Spike has an extremely high tolerance for pain and alcohol. He can take a beating that would kill most vampires, some even older than he is. When he does consume alcohol, he usually consumes it in copious quantities. As a vampire, with time and rest, he will heal.

Deceptively Intelligent:
Spike has the benefit of a classical education, albeit a 19th century classical education. He may not put on airs, but he is far more intelligent than he likes to let on. He might not be a scientist, or an expert in many fields, but he is able to follow along and provide insight when it suits him. In today's terms, he's a member of Mensa that likes to masquerade as man of the people, or vampires, as the case may be. Underestimate him at your peril.

Eidetic Memory:
Spike's mind is a curious thing. He can recall with alarming clarity anything that he has seen, tasted, smelt, touched, or heard. It helps to have a trigger, something to bring it all back to him, but he can remember everything that he has done in his long life. Thankfully, he doesn't have a soul... yet.

Fangs:
Spike is a vampire, and as such, he has a pair of razor sharp fangs. These canines extend when he reveals his vampire face, and are strong and durable enough to easily penetrate human skin, clothing, and perhaps even body armour. They really aren't meant as an offensive weapon. In order to make use of them, he has to have all but defeated his victim. The only way he could use them against someone who was still fighting back would be as a Sabretooth Tiger, in essence, using them as a shiv.

Regenerative Healing:
Spike is a vampire. He's technically no longer among the living. But he still heads from wounds. And he does it at a faster rate than any normal human being could. He can also heal from injuries that would not be recoverable to a human. When he was paralysed, he recovered in a few short months, though he pretended to be paralysed long after his recovery for his own purposes. He has not aged since he was turned.

Superhuman Senses:
Spike is a vampire, and vampires have an unusually good sense of smell. Some of them, like Spike, can even tell when someone's sick. Though, that only works when he's not very hungry. Hunger has a way of weakening his senses. That's how he ended up eating a hippie at Woodstock. He has terrific night vision, much like a cat. His other senses are similarly superhuman, but they're of lesser importance to him. In fact, he hates having a heightened sense of taste. Blood gets awfully dull after nearly two hundred years of drinking it. That's why he likes to add things to his blood such as cinnamon or weetabix.

Superhuman Speed:
Spike is faster than a normal human. He can attack quickly, surprising many of his foes, though he's on the lower end of superhuman speed, probably in the realm of Spider-Man, though he lacks the spider-sense and other abilities. He's certainly not as agile or flexible. In fact, doing the splits would probably kill him. But he is quick. It helps him with the sleight of hand too. He is very good at dodging attacks.

Superhuman Strength:
Spike is stronger than most vampires. He's in good health, if you can call it that, and he exercises regularly. With only his strength, and possibly his chi, if vampires can even have chi, he's managed to punch holes in a man's torso. He probably has around superhuman class 10 strength, as he has demonstrated the ability to single-handedly flip a car over, though at the time he was severely angered and was probably benefitting from an adrenaline assist.

Telepathic Resistance:

Spike is a vampire, and part and parcel of being a vampire is having a somewhat shared existence. It's rather complex, but he lost his soul and replaced it with a demonic possession. The result, as far as telepathic intrusion is concerned, is that this brain is wired differently. His surface thoughts don't generally appear on a telepathic scan. It takes quite a bit of effort for most telepaths to be able to read him. And truth be told, he likes it that way.

Skills

Charismatic:
Spike is charismatic. Women want him, and men want to be him. He is the life of the party, and he's not even alive. As bad as he can be, and he's had some terrible moments, absolutely horrendous moments, he always manages to come off as compelling. He has something that can't be taught, and it's called gravitas.

Demonology:
Spike possesses in-depth knowledge of demonic species and other supernatural beings, presumably due to his long existence. He's even picked up a few useful languages along the way, such as Latin and Fyarl. He knows the lay of the land and can pick out demon strengths and weaknesses. Those he hasn't encountered, he can suss out right quick.

Driving:
Spike has been driving almost as long as automobiles have been around. He owns a black 1959 DeSoto Fireflite, which has been modified so that he can drive it during the daytime. Ironically, he rarely drives it at night. He's also capable of driving motorcycles, lorries, buses, and once he drove a Winnebago.

Languages:
Spike is multilingual. In addition to his native English, he speaks several other European, Asian, African, and Demonic languages. He might well be a polyglot. He has shown an annoying ability to pick up languages with relative ease.

Martial Arts:
Spike favours a fighting style that blends Boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, Karate, Kung-Fu, Ninjutsu, Taekwondo, and street fighting. He has personally killed two slayers. He did this by analyzing their fighting style and sensing their weaknesses. For Spike, battles are as much about the mind as they are the body. But he does love a good donnybrook.

Psychology:
Spike is unusually perceptive and highly observant, especially as it relates to the human psyche. In the hands of a man like Spike, and he is a man, Vampire or not, psychological weapons can cut as deeply as the finest blade, often much deeper. Spike is a master of the divide-and-conquer strategy, exploiting inherent tensions that exist in any social gathering, and using it for his own benefit. He can cut through the malarkey, getting to the truth of the matter. It's rather annoying, to be honest. He sees through people. He just can't see through himself.

Pub Games:
Spike is familiar with the traditional pub games such as darts, card games like blackjack and poker, billiards, and snooker. He is also good with Mah Jongg, Checkers, Chess, and Go. He's also something of a card sharp.

Technology:
Spike is nearly two hundred years old. Most, let's say people, of his age aren't exactly up to speed when it comes to modern technology. But Spike has kept up with the times. His crypt has running water, electricity, with a television, and a computer. He has a mobile phone (it's a long story), plays video games, and likes to go on long drives, even in the daylight. He just has to cover most of the windows to prevent him from, well, burning to ash. He may not have a regular source of income, but he likes to nick the latest tech.

Thievery:

Spike is a vampire. He has to nick anything he wants. To that end, he has become skilled at picking locks, hotwiring cars, and the sleight of hand.

Car:
Spike owns a black 1959 DeSoto Fireflite, which has been modified so that he can drive it during the daytime. It's in good order, often parked somewhere near his crypt. He rarely drives it at night. If he ever got the money, he'd love to replace the windows with that special glass that Wolfram and Hart uses.

Crypt:
Spike has made an Old Blüdhaven Cemetery crypt in Caernarvon into a fairly liveable home. There is hot and cold running water, electricity, a television, refrigerator, computer, bed, chairs, books, and everything else he's thought to nick. Most of it is housed in the cavern under the crypt. He even has a Dyson 360 Eye.

Scooby Gang:

Spike has become a valuable member of the Scooby Gang. He's almost trusted... by some of them. They know the score. He's evil. He reminds them of that all the time. But he's really trying to convince himself of that. In truth, he's in a bind. He can't hurt humans without setting off that blasted chip in his head. He likes to fight. So instead of being bored and living off blood from the butcher's, he gets involved. He can help them, and it gives his life meaning. Besides, there are only five episodes of Coronation Street a week, and he's watched all nine seasons of Passions so much that he can quote it verbatim. When they let him, he is the Scooby Gang's best fighter. And they help him... some of the time.

Weaknesses

Beheading:
Spike could survive the loss of a limb. It wouldn't grow back, but he wouldn't die from it either. The exception to this is his head. If it were removed, cut off by a blade, punched, ripped, or otherwise removed, he would die instantly.

Benign:
It is widely believed that vampires are incapable of being beign. Spike has well and thoroughly put that theory to the rest, even before he got the chip in his head. Spike has always seen his vampirism as an inconvenience, something to be overcome. He walks out in the daylight, using a cloak or jacket to cover himself. He drives in the daylight. He does what he wants, when he wants, and has fun. Sometimes that involves eating someone, or did before the aforementioned chip, and other times it means just having a beer. Spike's apparently good nature has put him at odds with the vampires, the demons, and the forces of nature. After receiving that chip, it's become ten times worse.

Blood:
Spike is a vampire and thus must consume blood to survive. Human blood is his preferred drink, but in a pinch, as he's been forced to since he had that blasted chip installed, he can survive indefinitely on pig's blood. Spike likes to spice it up with cinnamon or weetabix. The former gives it a bit of spice, and the later some texture. He's experimented with all manner of ways to make the blood more appetising. But the point is, he needs it. Butchers are his main source of blood, though he can steal from the hospital. Before he had the chip, he got to drink from the source. Those were the days...

Chip:
Spike was experimented upon by a secret organisation he knows only as 'the initiative'. They classified him as 'hostile 17'. That's about all he knows about them, except that they put a chip in his head, which prevents him from harming human beings. Vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness are fair game; which is part of the reason he's cast his lot in with the Scoobies. He likes to fight, and they offered him an outlet for that desire. Aliens, metahumans, mutates, and mutants have had mixed results. The chip wasn't designed with them in mind, so sometimes it affects him, other times it does not. When he does try to hurt a human being, the chip will send him a scorching pain in his head. Hurting humans is just not worth it... unless he really wants to hurt them.

Spike has periodically seized upon opportunities that have presented themselves to him in his ongoing efforts to remove or otherwise incapacitate the chip. Some have temporarily worked, like when he was struck by lightning, but the chip has proven to be annoying adaptive. These periods of malfunction seem to be short lived.

Fire:
Spike is especially vulnerable to fire. Most things burn, but vampires can burst into flames with enough heat. Given his age and strength, he's able to endure being on fire for longer than younger and weaker vampires. He's tougher than your average vampire. Despite his aversion to fire, he still smokes cigarettes. But that's how he is. He voluntarily brings a source of fire close to his face several times a day.

Impatient:
Spike is a cunning strategist and sound tactician. He is capable of formulating plans, strategies, setting wheels in motion, but then he gets bored. He prefers to 'live' in the moment. When he first arrived in Blüdhaven, his attack was supposed to coincide with the Night of St. Vigeous, but he "couldn't wait" to go after the Slayer, costing many the Order of Aurelius dearly. On the other hand, he was able to put up with several torturous months of feigning weakness while pretending to be a paraplegic as he waited for the right time to strike against his rival. He can wait, but he needs the proper motivation.

Mirrors:
Spike does not have a reflection. While a minor issue, it does signal him out as a vampire. And ever since that hack Bram Stoker let the world know about vampires, every Tom, Dick, and Harry would know exactly what he is if they ever caught him... not reflecting in a mirror.

Religion:
Spike shies away from religious people and artefacts whenever possible. Symbols of religion such as the crucifix or Star of David can burn him at the slightest touch. But it can't be any symbol. It has to be an actual symbol. He won't get burnt by pressing the plus button on a calculator. Someone tying two sticks together into a cross wouldn't mean much to him, unless of course the person holding the cross believed in it. That's what gives these symbols their power: faith. A devotedly religious person can channel their spiritual energy into these symbols, just as ordained members of their faith have with churches and other holy artefacts. Holy water burns. Really, anything associated with religion is a bad thing as far as Spike is concerned.

Residences:
Spike cannot enter a private residence without expressly being invited by a current resident of that abode. Once invited, he can return at any time, but there are ways of uninviting him. They're just not too easy to implement. He can however enter all public spaces. Schools, hospitals, stores, factories, apartment hallways, staircases, elevators, he just can't enter the home.

Sunlight:
Spike can exist for brief moments in the sun. This is due to his age and strength. But he will burn and die if he can't get out of the sun quickly enough. The most he could probably endure could be minutes, but seconds would be far more preferable.

Wood:
Spike will die if a wooden steak is ever driven through his heart. Puncturing any other body part and he'll be fine. In pain, but he won't die from it. It doesn't have to be a specially carved steak. Any wooden object would do so long as it was made of wood and driven through his heart.

Zeitgeist:

Spike is a vampire. Everyone and their dog seem to know the weaknesses of a vampire. They know their abilities. They know how to spot one. Thankfully, some things aren't true, like their aversion to garlic. Many vampires dislike garlic, but Spike loves it, especially when bread is baked with garlic butter and cheese on top.
