Profile
An undercurrent of connections and manipulation that stretches over centuries is the silent hallmark of the scientist once known as Nathaniel Essex, who, having sacrificed his conscience for the unfettered pursuit of science, is now known as Mr. Sinister. A master of genetic engineering, his goals are nothing short of the advancement of the human race to its peak point in evolution, with himself as the controlled hand guiding it along. The few who have seen him find that he often comes bearing gifts...with hidden strings attached. Fewer still have engaged him battle and lived to tell the tale.

Sinister is sheathed entirely in what looks like a royal blue bodysuit made out of interlocking bands of metal, like the overlapping belly scutes of a snake. A red band encircles his waist at its narrowest point, and above in the center of his chest is a crimson diamond. From his collarbones, a wide red collar flares out to the sides and behind the back of his head, forming a high arch like a downward-facing crescent moon. Darker indigo material covers his shoulders into triangular epaulets, circling under his arms and running back into a mass of blue-black bands that arch up and over his back, collectively forming a billowing cape. Indigo gloves cover his fingers and tuck into plated indigo gauntlets that cover his forearms up past his elbows. Similarly, indigo metal boots fitted like the armor of a medieval knight cover his feet, ankles and shins, riding to points over his knees.
You'd swear the mass of bands that make up his cape seem to slither and flutter of their own volition.

History

History:
- As a child, Nathaniel Essex travelled to Greenwich Park, south of the Thames in London, and was fascinated with the wealthy, well-educated individuals moving too and fro through the park. What struck him the most was the cleanliness of the entire scene. Cleanliness and purity would continue to echo through his later thinking as an adult.
* Became a biologist in 1859 and joined London's Royal Society, and was considered one of the greatest minds of his day. He became obsessed with Charles Darwin's theories of evolution, but felt that Darwin and his contemporaries were shackled by moral constraints. Science, he felt, was beyond morality.
* After Dr. Essex's son, Adam Essex's, death, at the age of four, from numerous birth defects including crooked bones and hemophilia, he was driven deeper into his work.
* Developed the concept of "Essex Factors", markers in the human genome that would lead to humanity's future evolution into superior beings. Dr. Essex's theories were mocked and ridiculed, leaving him bitter, and his and his revealing of an unorthodox experiment resulted in his ousting from the Royal Society. Even Darwin himself suggested that Dr. Essex see a physician due to the trauma of losing his son. Angry, Dr. Essex stated to Darwin that if becoming a monster was what was required for science to progress, then he would become a monster.
* After meeting Cootie Tremble, Dr. Essex came in contact with the Marauders, who were collecting and caging the misshapen freaks of the streets of London, Discovering them to be the precursors to homo superior, Essex hired on the Marauders to continue their work, bringing their captures to his laboratory where he would dissect and study them. Essex went so far as to exhume the body of his dead son to experiment on him. Growing curious about her husband's work, Rebecca Essex checked in Essex's lab, finding the body of their son in an incubation tube. She passed out from shock while Dr. Essex was entertaining a patron interested in his work.
* After meeting with the Hellfire Club, Essex and his patron explained the potential of Essex's theories and pronounced the soon coming wave of mutant births in the human population. Feeling a pull towards his pregnant wife and the remains of his family, he decided to return home, only to find that his wife had freed his captives and prematurely given birth, dying of stress. Asking for forgiveness at her side, Rebecca denied him, stating, "To me, you are utterly and contemptibly sinister!" with her dying words. Dr. Essex surrendered the last of his humanity, devoting himself to science, returning to his patron and his work, taking the name 'Sinister' for himself. - 1882 - Sinister was present at Darwin's funeral, bemused at the irony of the world's foremost atheist being buried in Westminster Abbey. Giving up a remaining picture of his wife and son, he reminded himself that there was no reason to hold onto their memory, and left for the United States. There he set up an obstetrics clinic and performed side research on society's deviants, taking on the pseudonym Nathan Milbury. Here he had unfettered access to an abundance of generational information to study.
* 1907 - Mr. Sinister surfaces in Canada looking for a clawed wild man named "Logan", sending his Marauders to hunt for him.
* 1915 - In 1915, Sinister went back to England and granted Jacob Shaw the ability to shape-shift, which he used to murder his brother, Esau Shaw.
* 1920's - Sinister encountered and influenced the work of a man named Herbert Edgar Wyndham, who dreamed of doing what Sinister had already accomplished breaking the genetic code for human DNA.
* 1940's - Sinister worked for the Nazis, earning the nickname "Nosferatu" at the Auschwitz camp. Due to his pale skin and habit of taking blood samples from everyone, Sinister frightened even the Nazis. He would offer candy to children in exchange for their blood as a means of bribery, an action witnessed by a young Max Eisenhardt. During this time, Sinister created Experiment N2, a clone of Namor the Sub-Mariner, which could forcibly suck the water out of Namor and use it to douse the android Human Torch's flames. To Sinister's considerable surprise, though, Captain America was able to defeat N2.
* 1946 - a Dr. Nathan Milbury was involved in Project: Black Womb, a secret government project headed by Amanda Mueller and aided by Dr. Alexander Ryking, Dr. Kurt Marko and Irene Adler, who studied, but did not alter, thousands of children, mostly mutants, in post-natal holding tanks. Dr. Brian Xavier was a colleague of Dr. Ryking and Dr. Marko at the project.
* 1968 - In 1968, Sinister was present in Vietnam, where he and the ever-loyal Scalphunter kidnapped both soldiers and villagers to perform experiments on, giving Sinister the alias White Devil. Victor Creed was hired to investigate the disappearances, but his employer was beheaded by Scalphunter, who gave Creed a large sum of money to buy him off and recruit him as one of Sinister's "enforcers". - For decades, Sinister secretly observed the development of mutant children, as they grew (many of which had been earmarked by Project: Black Womb) in the State Home for Foundlings in Omaha, Nebraska. Creating a cutting-edge laboratory underneath the Orphanage, which seemed to have some quasi-biological properties, Sinister cruelly manipulated the children's childhood developmental processes and even tried to control their adult lives, so they might become his minions. Another notable test subject was Emma Frost, who Sinister had admitted to his Essex Clinic.
* After surviving a plane crash, Scott and his younger brother, Alex Summers were hospitalized for injuries sustained during their landing. Scott and Alex, both, suffered traumatic amnesia regarding the plane incident. Alex left the hospital after two weeks, but Scott remained in the hospital for a year, where Sinister began experimentation on him for a year. At one time, Scott awoke from his injuries and destroyed the roof of the hospital, at which time, Sinister began creation of ruby-quartz lenses for the youth to function in society. Upon recovering, Scott was placed in the State Home for Foundlings and was subjected to batteries of tests and experiments by Sinister.
* Sinister lost control over Scott, after a display of Scott's power had attracted the attention of the mutant telepath, Professor Charles Xavier, who teamed up with FBI agent, Fred Duncan, in their mutual attempt to find Scott. Scott was rescued from Winters' clutches and was enlisted by Professor Xavier as the first member of the X-Men, a team of young mutants who trained to use their powers in Professor Xavier's dream for human/mutant equality, and second student to enlist in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, to become Cyclops. Sinister continued to monitor Scott, even becoming a long-time neighbor of his grandparents.
* At one point, learning through underworld contacts, Remy LeBeau approached Sinister for help in controlling his powers. Sinister reversed the surgery that he performed years earlier and removed some of Remy's brain tissue, to reduce his power levels and afford him a greater degree of control. As a result, Remy was now in the geneticist's debt.

Chess Master: Sinister is always multiple steps ahead of his targets. His planning, strategic and tactical abilities are on par with some of the best thinkers and generals on the planet. He is able to keep track of thousands of potential targets and those connected to them, subtly manipulating individuals towards his desired end goals. He doesn't plan for a single potential victory - he plans so that all paths taken by his targets and enemies result in a useful outcome for him in the end. He is capable of composing and changing plans on the fly as necessary. He can concoct and successfully enact multiple complex plans at the same time.
Patient: Sinister is able to wait years, decades or even lifetimes to see his goals achieved. He is willing to devote long periods of time to training minions, or even raising children from infancy to adulthood. He is incredibly focused on his goals, treating them as 'whens' and not 'ifs'.
Perfectionist: Along with a need for cleanliness and order, Sinister's desire for perfection borders on pathological obsession. He does not tolerate failure from his underlings, and he does not tolerate poor results. His research and life's work is centered around genetic perfection in the mutant race, and creating a perfect being.
Science: An avowed atheist, Sinister has replaced a worship of a deity with a worship of science. He puts knowledge, reason and logic above all else, and believes strongly in Darwinian evolution. He filters every decision through the lens of scientific principles and rationality, completely discarding all forms of morality as unnecessary restraints. This makes him capable of committing atrocities to further his research goals, but at the same time, restrains him from unnecessary cruelty and wanton destruction - his cruelty is only done in the name of progress.
Inhuman: With the loss of his wife and remaining family, Nathaniel willingly abandoned his humanity and accepted becoming a monster to further his ends. This has been a slow process of shedding human affection and attachments, first to the memories of his wife and children, then to his standards of morality. There are hints that the man that Nathaniel once was is buried beneath layers of Sinister, as his unusual attachment and kindness to 1930's radio comedienne Faye Livingstone attest. Whether or not this kernel of human decency is still viable and accessible to others at this point in time is unknown.

- Mental Paralysis: He has the ability to induce temporary mental or physical paralysis and also pain into the minds of others.
- Mind Control: He is capable of controlling the minds of others one at a time if the target is in his physical presence. He can also manipulate memories, creating new ones or erasing others and alter perceptions and appearances.
Cellular Shape-Shifting:
Mister Sinister possesses the ability to control every molecule of his body, allowing him to assume the form of any one he wishes. He once reduced himself into a semi-liquid state and with total control of his body not only can he control his muscles and even his pain but he can also create weapons, clothes, assume animal form and their abilities and also divide himself in multiple forms.
Concussive Blasts:
Mister Sinister can fire blasts of concussive force from his hands, eyes or from the diamond-shaped scarlet mark on his forehead. These blasts are powerful enough to match Cyclops's energy blasts at their full power for a considerable period of time and have a great destructive power.
Flight:
Sinister has shown he can use his telekinesis on himself to accommodate flight. His top speed is presently unknown.
Force Fields:
Mister Sinister can erect multiple force barriers to repel, reflect and defend against incoming onslaughts, they're potent enough to stand against Cyclops' optic blasts. He normally uses them on a personal level but it is assumed he can not only increase and decreased the protection level but also enhance the size of the shield to cover others and even small areas around the size of a room.
Immortality:
Mister Sinister is functionally immortal in the sense that he is immune to aging and disease and he can rapidly regenerate almost any damaged bodily tissue. It is still possible for him to be killed. He also doesn't require food, water, or even air to breathe and can survive indefinitely in a complete vacuum.
Power Blocking:
He has the ability to mentally paralyze a foe he's touching and the ability to psionically "turn off" the superpowers of any mutant, creating a mental block.
Regenerative Healing Factor:
Mister Sinister is able to rapidly regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue with much greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. Sinister can fully heal from injuries that result in massive tissue damage or loss such as multiple gunshot wounds, slashes, puncture wounds, broken bones, and severe burns within a matter of moments. His healing factor is comparable to Wolverine's.
Superhuman Durability:
Mister Sinister's muscles and tissue are far more durable than those of an ordinary man allowing him to resist gunshot, physical damage, shocks and also energy blasts. He has, however, been heavily hurt by Cyclops' optic blasts in the past.
Superhuman Reflexes:
Sinister's reflexes and agility are enhanced to levels that are beyond the human body's natural limits.
Superhuman Speed:
Mister Sinister is capable of running at speeds far greater than those of the finest human athlete.
Superhuman Stamina:
Mister Sinister's muscles produce considerably less fatigue toxins than the muscles of ordinary humans. He can exert himself at peak capacity several hours before fatigue begins to affect him.
Superhuman Strength:
Mister Sinister possesses superhuman strength, which may be a product of his shape-shifting. Sinister is able to press lift within the 2 to 10 ton range unaided by telekinesis.
Technology Interface:
Mister Sinister is able to directly interface with various technologies he has at his disposal.
Telekinesis:
He possesses telekinetic abilities enabling him to levitate and manipulate living beings, inanimate objects, and to some extent energy, psionically. He can lift as much as 10 tons of weight with the possibility of more with concentration and exertion.

Genius-Level Geneticist:
Mister Sinister is a genius and a geneticist of the highest order, able to predict genetic mutations and splice DNA. It is quite probable his powers are the result of self-experimentation - his shape-shifting power is due to a procedure he performed on himself. He can also produce large amounts of clones; he has done so with all his Marauders and he is an expert on the art of cloning and also on mutants, with vast knowledge of powers, genes and more due to the hundreds of samples of mutant DNA he has access to. He is normally described as the world's greatest geneticist and along with Professor X, is one of the leading authorities on mutants of the entire world.
Master Manipulator:
He possesses a good deal of knowledge in psychology, and is a skilled manipulator. Mister Sinister is also a excellent leader and strategist, capable of creating plans with ease and even stay ahead of tactical thinkers such as Professor X, Cyclops, Storm and Magneto, keeping several steps ahead of his opponent.
Master Surgeon:
He is a master surgeon in multiple surgical disciplines, including neurosurgery. Besides this area he is also a skilled doctor, one of the best from his time in England with honors in medicine and later in biology.
Skilled Mechanical Engineer:
Having created devices that seem to have been taken from the tales of Jules Verne, his inventions include advanced ships, devices that negate all mutant powers except for his own or transfer them, perform healing and almost resurrection, teleportation, genetics, project energy blasts and other attacks using mutant powers harvested from DNA samples. Although his inventions are not as spectacular as those of Iron Man, he is a very talented inventor and engineer.
Trained Combatant:
Mister Sinister trained himself in martial arts and unharmed combat, and is able to defend himself from strong opponents and even other trained combatants.

Aliases:
Apart from his birth name of Nathaniel Essex, Mr. Sinister has multiple aliases and appearances he has used to establish funding, research sites and useful contacts over almost two centuries. These make it difficult to completely track his movements and location, and allow him to interact with others under assumed names and guises.
Dna Samples:
Sinister has thousands of DNA samples, ranging from mutants and metahumans to several American Presidents.
Laboratories:
Sinister has multiple secret laboratories around world. These laboratories contain equipment used for genetic experimentation, surgery, DNA storage, cloning, biostasis (storing living individuals in hibernation), artificial gestation, transportation, technological engineering, and weaponized defenses. They can house both his subjects, himself and his minions comfortably and securely.
Minions:
Sinister has many useful allies and henchmen, both willing and unwilling, that quietly work for his benefit. He often has spies in major organizations, from government agencies to mutant revolutionary cells to clandestine cabals of power.

Apocalypse:
Essex entered into a contract of servitude with Apocalypse well over a century ago, and Apocalypse is responsible for Sinister's enhanced state. It could be argued that everything Sinister does is towards the goal of escaping or overthrowing his master.
Bigger Better Deal:
Sinister is more prone to make a deal with an enemy for something he wants than outright destroy them. This means that can be sometimes be tricked or delayed.
Cyclops' Optic Blasts:
One of Sinister's few weaknesses is one to Scott Summers' optic blasts. They can cause him serious harm and slow down his ability to regenerate.
Intellectual Property:
Sinister tries to keep his research and the fruits of it to himself, to prevent things from being traced back to him, or to prevent others from using his work for their own benefits. Use of his techniques or research will gain his attention quickly, diverting him away from nearly every other goal, as he attempts to destroy or command control of those who use his work without his consent.
My Precious:
Anything that is vital to his work is something to be protected or controlled. This means that Sinister must expend a lot of time and effort on protecting and maintaining his interests, or preventing those individuals critical to his research goals from dying or being rendered useless.
Scientific Blinders:
If your last name is not 'Summers', 'Grey' or 'Dane', Sinister is highly unlikely to pursue you at any great length (or even care that you exist). He is not a wantonly destructive villain, and thus may let unspotted threats to his work escape unharmed.
The Best Laid Plans:
Sinister plays the long game, and he must wait years, even decades, for them to finally come to fruition. He is focused entirely on one goal, and as such there is a possibility that the unpredictable or anything outside his narrow focus can elude his observation. He only pays attention to that which pertains to, or interferes with, his life's work. Anything beyond that is of little concern to him, which can leave him unprepared for the unexpected. This is not, however, a regular occurrence for him.
