Profile

James Proudstar is the last of his tribe, though there is still an Apache nation. His tribe and family are gone, leaving the mutant alone. James is superhumanly strong, fast, and has enhanced senses in addition to a vague magical sense and regeneration. James is strongly loyal to the woman who has given him a home for years, Emma Frost. James does not believe in Xavier's dream, though he feels it is wonderful. He thinks it is misguided and naive. James tries to mitigate the worst impulses of the Hellfire club and serving as a guardian for the mutants left on the streets of New York, and tries to work alongside the other mutant teams, though sometimes he finds doing so to be a struggle.

James Proudstar is a man of unusual and imposing stature. He is tall, settling in at over seven feet. The top of his head is crowned in raven black locks of shining hair that fall to his shoulders in soft waves. The occasional, errant lock settles on his face. James has a coppery, bronze skin consistent with a man of Native American ancestry. His brows are expressive, and his features are the epitome of the noble savage. James has refined features with a strong but not overbearing jaw, straight nose, and lips that tend to be set in determined expression. When he speaks, James has a commanding, deep bass voice is often pitched low, to avoid booming.

Broad shoulders ripple with muscle. James is a muscular man, with large, strong arms. His biceps alone are enough to draw glances amongst a crowd. He has large hands that look powerful and are deceptively adroit. James has a broad, powerful chest that does not seem to restrain his graceful, agile movements. A compact, trim waist, and firm core lead to well-muscled legs. James is not just built for power, but also for speed. Taut thighs and supple, well-defined calves lead to large feet. Despite his physique, James moves with a cat-like grace and an easy economy of motion.

History

James grew up on the Cape Verde Reservation, part of the Apache nation in Arizona. He idolized his marine older brother. The son of Neal and Maria Proudstar, life was not that bad. The Proudstar's had a ranch, and lived there with his brother, parents, and their grandfather. James grew up listening to his grandfather's stories about the spirits and his ancestors. James grew up immersed in his culture, and learned not only the ways of the warrior, but the ways of a shaman, though he did not know it at the time.

James was much younger than his hero brother. Maria was diagnosed with terminal cancer when James was a young teen. Something was fishy according to one of John's friends, so James and John investigated the Arroyo Medical Center and the physician Edwin Martynec. Things got weird, and Martynec was apparently conducting experiments on the people of the reservation, he was also a wolf monster. John's mutant abilities, and James' burgeoning ones were enough to escape the slavering monster as the doctor blew the medical center up. It would not be the weirdest experience of James' life.

John joined the X-Men thereafter and soon after that died on mission with them. When the X-Men brought the body home, James stole it and burned it in a manner fitting an Apache Warrior. After swearing revenge, James was recruited by Emma Frost of the Massachusetts Academy to become one of her Hellions. He accepted and was one of her star pupils, running the team as an effective field leader and vicious combatant for years. James has forgiven the X-Men for their role in John's death, but he just doesn't believe in their dream. He has seen how people act over as small a matter as skin color and ethnicity.

A few years ago, James returned home to discover the Reservation essentially wiped out. The investigation went cold, but James keeps tabs on it, having suspects he continues to monitor. James attended Columbia University on a few generous scholarships provided by Hellfire club donors. Post graduation, James still cares for Emma Frost, one of the few people he considers family.

Caring
James Proudstar is a man capable of acts of casual, profound, even joyful violence. He is also capable of deeply compassionate acts of utter and complete service and selflessness. Jame sis the sort of guy who would help an Ex-Girlfriend get sober without expecting to get back together with her. He is a man who cares for his fellow man and is motivated to serve, protect, defend, avenge, and heal. James is the sorta guy who would give a friend the shirt off his back. Despite being a product of a school other than Xaviers, James is a fundamentally good and decent person. He has few friends, but James Proudstar is a true friend in return, even when they are not back at him. He can be almost pathetic, continuing to care for and heal other people, only to be ignored and marginalized in return. It is a curious side to a being so obviously suited to warfare.

Suspicious
Emma Frost is almost certainly manipulating James Proudstar. He is aware of this. James is deeply suspicious of the motivations and intentions of people in power. Ultimately, it is why he has remained where he is for as long as he has; he understands Emma Frosts motivations and goals. James appreciates what makes people tick and he applies this information. James is always trying to figure out how to protect himself from being being beholden to another to anothers whims. He is beginning to become a good judge of character.

Vengeful
An eye for an eye is the way he lives. A life for a life. Honor demands blood. Sometimes, James has to equalize the scales. He is not the sort who just forgives and forgets. He can forgive, but he never forgets. James knows there is a cosmic score. He tries not to play the game, but when he has to, James will settle said score.

Reckless
James has absolutely no regard for his own health and safety. The mission comes first, and once committed to it, he is all in. Staring down a couple of Sentinels, or death, or members of the X-Men with just a smile and a knife? No big deal. James has very little regard for his own safety, and often pays a price for it.

Schemer
Prior planning prevent piss poor performance. James Proudstar is the sort of guy who can plan a single operation against dramatically better opponents and carry the operation out to great effect, and win. He is a strategist and sneaky, cunning, clever warleader the likes of which the Apache have not produced since Cochise or Geronimo.

Warrior Born

While James is perfectly capable of peaceful resolutions, and a part of him prefers them, he is simply built for violence. James was born to fight. He loves to talk, but he loves to fight and sort things out too. James is psychologically suited to the strain and worry of Combat, and he enjoys it. A good scrap is cathartic. Bashing in the face of someone who needs it done makes James feel good. So many people are powerless, James is not one of them, and putting violence into motion makes him feel happy.

ENHANCED DEXTERITY

For James, thought and action are essentially instantaneous. He has superhuman reflexes, and can dodge and deflect bullets with relative ease. His arms and legs move with unnatural speed. He is unnaturally graceful, adroit, and dexterous for a being of his size.

ENHANCED DURABILITY
James Proudstar can take a beating and keep on ticking. He is squarely in the second tier in terms of durability. He can essentially take what he can dish out, which is the general rule of thumb. He is slightly better at doing damage than taking it, but his regeneration abilities handle the rest of that. A few blows from the Juggernaut are not going to kill him, but a knockdown drag out might. He has no particular vulnerabilities, nor any immunities. He can hold his breath for about 10 minutes.

ENHANCED SENSES
James lives in a world of enhanced sense. His senses are enhanced to varying degrees. He can identify and track someone by their scent alone, with better acuity than a bloodhound. His eyesight is slightly more acute than that of an Eagle, with superior color recognition, and night vision like that of an owl while maintaining greater range. His sense of touch is such he can read most printed materials with his hand, albeit it at a slower rate. He also can read braille, again, far slower than he can straight text. His hearing is better than a dogs, and he has both infra and ultrasonic hearing. He can listen to a heart rate and help use it to determine a persons stress levels. What is most unusual is his while his sense are highly developed, they are not particularly vulnerable to stimuli. He is no more or worse affected by a flashbang or pepper spray than most people. Indeed, due to his superior constitution and ability to regenerate,he can shrug off most sense debilitating agents.

REGENERATION
James Proudstar has a low level of regeneration. His body simply recovers from injury at an astonishing rate. James can recover from even devastating, life threatening injury in a matter of days rather than weeks. There is evidence suggesting that his aging is slowing as James is reaching his full growth and potential. This ability lessens poisons, toxins, and venoms to more tolerable levels. Most of them will not kill him, but the pain and debilitation they cause might make him wish he was dead.

SHAMAN
James has Shamanic training, though it came mostly from his grandfather and it was imperfect. Turns out, James has great potential as a shaman. His primary ability at this point is to see magical and spiritual energy. He can recognize a magic user or a magical creature pretty much on sight. He can see magical energy and auras. He otherwise is one of the mutants with magical potential, but he lacks the resources and training to develop his abilities.

SUPERHUMAN SPEED
James can run at 100 miles per hour, and can run at those speeds for hours at a time. He is incredibly fast, and he can run without fear of injury, or over and through broken terrain where other, less durable people might harm themselves. His swimming speed is not as fast as his running speed, but he can motor himself at around 40 miles per hour. His form is not particularly aquadynamic.

SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH
James is a superhumanly strong and powerful mutant. Initially, he was limited as he believed he had powers identical to his deceased brother. James was wrong, he far exceeds the ther Proudstar. James is near the top end of the second tier of superhuman strength. He is outclassed by Superman and Juggernaut, but he tops out in the range of the Thing, with greater untapped potential yet to explore. James cannot quite break into the very highest tiers up super strength, but he is quite capable of holding up buildings, and tossing some naval vessels.

In addition to brute strength displays, punching and kicking, James has a few more specialized abilities. He can plunge an arm through a buildings skin to arrest a fall. He can climb buildings by making his own finger holds with his hands as he climbs. James can even use his strong legs muscles to jump as much as a mile horizontally through the air from a standing position, and up to three in a running leap. James vertical leap is as much as 25 stories.

AGRI-BUSINESS
James Proudstar has a degree in Agri Business from Columbia University. He knows the agriculture markets, and has taken over the overall management of the family lands and ranch. He is playing a long term game with the ranch and is intent on growing it larger. He understands the commodities markets, the necessities of a business plan, and the complexities of modern ranching. All because he wanted to be good at taking care of his family legacy.

APACHE LORE
Columbia University awarded James Proudstar a degree in Anthropology, and he grew up listening to his grandfather telling stories of the Apache. The blood of Cochise and Geronimo is in his family line, and James is tied to his people in an odd way. He is the last one of his particular tribe and sept. He should be Chief, but a Chief needs a tribe. James knows the science of studying native people, but he also particularly knows the sad story of his people, their spiritual lore, their philosophy, and their way of life.

FIGHTING
James has a rare gift. He is a tremendous fighter. He is a born warrior, and he has the correct mindset. He can fight with the likes of Wolverine and live to fight another day. Intensive training as a Hellion, then with private tutors hired by Emma Frost to forge a true weapon have left James Proudstar a truly gifted, powerful fighter. With his powers, he is a dynamo and can defeat multiple Sentinels without serious injury.

James has a specialty in knife fighting. As potent and powerful a mixed martial artist he is, with a pair of knives, James is a deadly, quick, accurate and vicious foe.

MENTAL DEFENSE
James has a formidable mental defense. Emma Frost gave all of her students certain training (that she can bypass a bit more easily of course) to better protect their minds from psionic screening and assault. James has a particularly willful mind, and is capable, in the short term, of barring even professor Xavier from his thoughts. His defense is not unassailable, and over time his will diminishes and falters. Determined assault and reading will, of course, yield more information.

MULTILINGUAL
James is a native speaker of both Apache and English. Emma Frost also saw to it that her students were well-educated. Either by telepathy or intense training, James was taught Spanish, Latin, Portuguese, French, German and Japanese.

RANCHING
James grew up ranching. He knows all about horses, cows, sheep, goats, and dogs. He can ride a horse, sheer a sheep, milk a cow, and tolerate goats. He knows all the stuff a farm kid should know.

SHAMAN
James had no idea really, he was being taught how to be an Apache shaman. He certainly had no idea that he had an affinity for magic. Let alone that he could one day see magic and spirits. He has some of the lore he needs to get better, but none of the time.

SKULLDUGGERY
The Apache people have a reputation for being dirty, underhanded fighters. They employ stealth, deceit, misinformation, ambush, and asymmetrical warfare to eliminate opponents. James lives up to this stereotype and exceeds it. He is stealthy, hard to detect, hard to beat, and has no problem disengaging only to attack again when conditions are more favorable. James Proudstar is quieter and far more stealthy than a man his size should be, and he has far more trickery up his sleeve than should fit up there, and James has big sleeves.

SOCIAL GRACES
One does not embarrass the benefactors or the trainers at the Hellfire Club. James had to learn to fit in with high society. Once he figured out it was a way to allay suspicions and that it was another battlefield, James took to the lessons with a gusto. James can be polite, cool, calm, collected and natter on about nothing or everything with the absolute best of them. He has been extensively schooled in dancing and clothing. James has developed a slightly grim, but flattering personal style and flair that suits him well. Despite his life on the Reservation and the ranch, James does not embarrass himself in high society.

STORYTELLING
James grew up listening to stories from his grandfather of heroes and villains. While he is not sure which he is, James has learned to tell the stories himself, and does so with surprising energy and ability. While as a teenager he was sullen and secretive about Apache stories, as a grown man, james is generous with them, and enjoys telling clean stories to children. He is an evocative storyteller, and he understands the lessons in them, and how to present those lessons. He is generous with his stories with children of any and all ethnic backgrounds.

SURVIVAL
James Proudstar grew up along a river in a desert. His family was ranchers, and his brother was a marine. His grandfather was a wild-eyed traditionalist who wanted his grandsons to be manly men. He got his wish, as both John and james grew up to be able to survive and even thrive in the wilderness. With or without powers, James can survive basically anywhere long term, though the ocean might be problematic due to water issues. James knows how to get by in almost any environment, and between his powers and expertise, he really has nothing to fear in the wilds.
He also was taught to hunt and track, which as his powers have developed has become trivially easy.
He is not a fan of the cold though.

TACTICS & STRATEGY

James can plot, scheme, strategize, and implement most any plan. With a list of resources and intelligence, James can devise strategies that are incredibly precise, effective, and unexpected. James is an excellent planner.

APACHE NATION
James Proudstar has dual citizenship, and is a full blooded Apache with a proud pedigree. He has certain rights and privileges in Apache reservations and can refuge on tribal lands.

HELLFIRE CLUB
James Proudstar is an operative of the Hellfire club. He is not a favored operative, as he has scruples and integrity. However, for the missions he is suited for, he is effective. James is getting an education due to their largess. Emma, for reasons all of her own, has shielded James from the worst of the club. No doubt to foster his loyalty. In particular, he can count on Emma Frosts assistance, should he need it.

KNIFE COLLECTION
James has a lot of knives. Nothing more valuable than his vibranium knives, which are essentially priceless. Regardless, the ranch house has a wall of knives in the room that was his fathers study.

PROUDSTAR RANCH
James has a tidy income from his familial ranch, which is being run professionally. He reinvests the profits, and has grown the ranch. It makes him a respectable amount of money this year, and will continue to do so long as there is not a huge commodity correction. He is getting to the point of operations where economies of scale are on his side. There is money in ranching, and free range, antibiotic hippy beef is a growing market. James also has bison on the farm, and is making inroads in the bison market, which is a niche market, but profitable.

VIBRANIUM KNIVES

Heavy bladed, hard, strong, and essentially prices, James Proudstar's vibranium knives are a keepsake from his brother. The blades are heavy, large Bowie knives, They are all but impervious to damage, as the harder James hits something with them, they harder they get. James can absorbs kinetic and sonic impacts with the blades, which only serve to make the blades more durable/ they are a matched pair, slightly over-sized, and perfectly balanced, meaning James can throw them with a very high degree of accuracy.

HONOR
James does not lack honor. He has honor, and integrity. He just doesn't believe in a fair fight, and he thinks people who complain about one are fools. James word is his bond, and he is a friend for life. He is a man of great, if archaic integrity. The stereotype of a honorable Apache warrior lives on in James Proudstar. He would rather risk his life than break a promise to a friend. James tries to be careful to whom he makes promises.

LOYALTY
James trusts Emma Frost. Thus far, it has not gone poorly for him. She says the Hellfire Club did not kill his tribe. He believes her, rather, he believes she knows nothing about it. James believes in Emma as a person; he has seen her human side and been the recipient of her affection and largess. She has given him a good life. He is grateful to her for many of the things he has in life, and the opportunities she has afforded him. A smart person would leave Emma Frost along, as James Proudstar actually cares about her and if someone were to harm her, he would demonstrate why his codename is Warpath.

Theresa Cassidy is a troubled alcoholic girl from Xavier's school. They are a few years apart in age. They got into some trouble together growing up, and she put her neck out for him a time or two, and he did the same in return for her. Same deal. Mess with her, mess with James Proudstar.

James loyalty for the person is absolute. If Emma is wrong, he will tell her, but he will still die to defend her. It is that simple, for him. It is what family does for each other.

MARTYNEC
Doctor Edwin is still out there, somewhere. He might be under a new name, or living another life. Regardless, he still draws breath and the wolf-mutant loathes James for his part in ruining the cape Verde experiments as a boy.

For his part, James hates Martynec as well, and periodically engages in attempts to find the monster and put an end to him.

SURVIVOR'S GUILT

James is the last Proudstar. He is the last of the Cape Verde apache. He was gone when someone, perhaps Dr. Edwin martynec, wiped the entire tribe out and left the corpses out to rot. James feels remorse and anger for this loss. He is utterly alone in the world, and holds himself responsible. Had he been at the Reservation that day, he reasons all of them would still be alive. This guilt and remorse motivates James and can be manipulated by clever foes.
