Profile

In certain circles, Remy is known as le Diable Blanc, or the White Devil. To others, he is Gambit of the X-Men. But most know him simply as Remy LeBeau, a former member of Lousiana's Cardinal Thieves, better known as the St. Roch Thieves' Guild. He also has something of a past, having played his part in the Mutant Massacre. A master thief and formidable fighter, the only thing he can't escape is his past, no matter how hard he tries.

Unkempt. Shifty. In need of a shower. These are some of the more likely initial impressions strangers might have upon catching a glimpse of the transient in a trenchcoat. Of course, the disheveled brown hair and the two day beard aren't the features the tend to get remembered. The features that usually stick out the most are the man's eyes. Solid black where they ought to be white, with sinister red pupils. They're distinctive, if nothing else.

Of special note is the dramatic brown duster that hangs down well past his knees. Cut in a fashion that's more European than Western, the coat is well-worn to the point of shabbiness. Minor repairs have been made, patches added here and there, and the original buttons have been replaced by silver ones in the shape of the fleur-de-lis. It's clearly a long-time fixture of his wardrobe, or possibly a wearable security blanket.

But although his coat has seen way better days, the rest of his outfit is actually pretty snazzy. Snazzy enough for most clubs, anyway. A burgundy dress shirt of presumably expensive make, which fits well enough that it was likely tailored. It's worn untucked, with the top three buttons undone, just enough to show off some chest hair without going all the way into Tom Jones territory. Below that he's rocking some pretty non-descript black dress slacks and a pair of boots that look like they weren't really intended for anything practical. They've even got poker hands stamped on the metal plate covering the toes. Judging by the choice of hands (Royal Flush), the man fancies himself either a great poker player, or extremely lucky.

History

Remy was born in a hospital, just as most people are these days. He does not know which one, or who his parents were. He doesn't even know that he was born in a hospital. But he was. When he was born, his condition, his mutancy, was evident for all to see. Little Remy had crimson red eyes. To this day, he remains in the dark about it, but his eyes, and the date of his birth, matched a prophecy known to the St. Roch Thieves' Guild. So they abducted the infant from the hospital. He would be given to Antiquity, who raised him for his first few years. He's not sure if he was abandoned, or ran away. He has no memory of that time. What he can remember is being a homeless boy on the mean streets of St. Roch. This is where his story really begins to take shape. Over the coming years, every major event, or person who would come into his young life, was orchestrated by Jean-Luc LeBeau, leader of the Thieves' Guild. He was left to tend to himself, but was kept under observation by the Guild.

Remy's first memories are of Fagan, a disenfranchised thief. He taught Remy how to read and write, as well as thievery. More than that, he taught Remy about life. Fagan knew the prophesy of "le Diable Blanc", and was entrusted with the preparation of the young mutant. He taught Remy how to survive. And he taught Remy well. One day, Remy befriend a pretty blonde girl named Bella. He would later learn that she was Belladonna Boudreaux, daughter of Marius Boudreaux, and heir to the St. Roch Assassin's Guild. But for now she was just Bella, his first and longest love. They became the best of friends, sweethearts, and were eventually wed but that is getting ahead of things.

Sometime after first meeting Bella, Fagan directed Remy to pick the pocket of a "mark" as he often did. But this mark was different. This time it was Jean- Luc LeBeau, patriarch of the St. Roch Thieves' Guild. Jean-Luc LeBeau was taken by surprise, never wanting to interfere on that level in the boy's development. But he was impressed. Had he been any other man, the boy would have made off with thousands of dollars from his wallet in cash and credit cards. But Jean-Luc LeBeau was no ordinary man and did manage to catch the boy in the act, but only just. Instead of punishing him as Remy expected, he was instead rewarded. Jean-Luc adopted Remy as his own son and brought him into his house, his family, and the Guild. Remy was moving up in the world.

Under the tutelage of Jean-Luc LeBeau and the rest of the guild members, Remy learned the art of being a modern day thief. They instilled within him a sense of self-reliance, taught him to use his skills to the best of his abilities, and gave him an old world refinement. He learned all about the history of thievery, duelling, professional courtesy, honour among thieves, and how to survive this high risk, high reward profession. And he excelled at it.

Throughout his training as a Thief, Remy continued to see Bella. It is sad, but he was her Romero, and she his Juliet. They were members of rival families, rival guilds, both the progeny of Candra, and ever in competition. Mostly at the behest of his father, Jean-Luc, Remy proposed. Jean-Luc convinced him that were they to marry, the Assassin's and Thieves' could unite, which was among the prophecies of "le Diable Blanc". Arrangements were made for the wedding to be held on Remy's eighteenth birthday; he did not ask how Jean-Luc knew when his birthday was. But he probably should have.

With an arranged marriage hanging over his head, but one he believed was out of love, life went on for Remy. When he was seventeen, preparations had to be made for the marriage. He had to establish himself in the line of succession for the Thieves' Guild. To do this, he was tasked with stealing L'Troile du Tricherrie or the Cheating Star as part of the Tracts of Passage. Accompanying as sponsor was his adopted brother Henri LeBeau, who was his closest friend.

The rightful owner of the jewel was one Genevieve Darceneaux, daughter of an infamous jewel thief. The Cheating Star was her father's most prized possessions in life, and was inherited along with everything else by his only daughter. In true fashion that would become the norm for Gambit, Remy LeBeau chose to steal it by the most convenient way he could think of: he seduced Genevieve. But uncharacteristically, which he now attributes to youth, he stole the gem, then spent the night, thinking he might as well enjoy himself while he can. It is something he still feels guilty for, and was probably the only time he felt he did take advantage of a woman. Come morning, he was gone.

But when he returned to Henri and Remy's hotel room, he discovered Henri was gone and in his place was a ransom note. It seems the original, no, the immediately previous owner, the one Genevieve's father had stolen it from, wanted it back. Remy didn't think to wonder how they knew he had it already, having stolen it only hours before. But he was young and inexperienced. He followed the instructions. A feral mutant had been hired to steal it, which just goes to show that some people don't know where to go to for finesse. But in this scenario, muscle and experience won out over youth and intelligence.

Remy handed the gem over to free his brother and Genevieve, who had also been kidnapped. But once he did, the mutant let go of the rope he had tied them both to. Unable to save them both, Remy saved Henri and let Genevieve plummet to her doom. It was a tough choice, but he would make the same choice had he to make it again. When he returned, he was judged to have passed the test despite returning without the gem. Henri's testimony swayed the Guild. He accomplished his task, actually stealing the gem. After all, it was only a test and the life of a guild member was more important than any mere gem.

On his eighteenth birthday, Remy and Belladonna were wed in holy matrimony. The minister asked if there were any reason that they should not be wed, and no one said a word. But immediately after the ceremony, and long before the honeymoon, Julien Boudreaux, Belladonna's brother, challenged him to a duel. It was to the death, and a rash decision by Julien. Remy easily outclassed his assassin counterpart in the sword, and made short work of him. Ironically, Remy was the reason behind the detente between the two guilds, and it was judged that excommunication was the best way to maintain that detente. There was nothing he could have done differently, but his presence would upset the balance they had striven to create. For peace to reign, Remy LeBeau had to go.

She may not have seen it this way, but Gambit did not want to bring Belladonna along with him on his new life as a vagabond. He wanted the best for her and he didn't think he could give it to her anymore. He left without a word, accepting the judgement of the guilds, and didn't even bother to leave a note. He assumed she would understand. He doesn't know. He has not seen her since.

From there on in, Remy LeBeau was alone. He stole to survive, using the skills taught to him over a lifetime in the Guild. Finally free of all authority, he behaved much like the fabled Robin Hood. He selected his targets wisely, stealing from wealthy people of lesser morals and giving it to the poor, which he was a part of. He travelled the globe, adventuring, seeing the sights, and living what others can only dream of, but he wasn't happy. He had no one to share his newfound wealth with. He went to Japan, Egypt, all across Europe, and back home to America. During these adventures, he was contacted by Professor Xavier and brought to Xavier's School.

During the intervening years, Gambit did some things he regrets. Like Robin Hood, he killed, or was responsible for aiding in some small others who killed. He still will not speak of it, but something terrible happened to him. Only Professor Xavier knows the true horrors Gambit has witnessed, and that is only in the briefest of images that he does not understand. Xavier tried to work with him, but has adopted a wait and see attitude for now. When Gambit is ready, Xavier and the X-Men will be there for him. Until that time, Gambit will endure this pain in silence...

Personality

Remy LeBeau had anything but a traditional upbringing. He was raised by people who could be called deviants. They didn't adhere to the typical social norms. His life included theft, deceit, trickery, and more than his share of violence. Because of this, he's not as inclined to feel guilt or remorse when he defies the expectations of those around him. It's not that he lacks the ability to have these feelings; it's just that his outlook is a bit skewed.

At his core, he's all about pragmatism. He's a realist. If the plan is insane, he's going to say so. He takes risks, he loves taking risks, but only when the odds are in his favour. Those are what you call calculated risks. They're far safer. But he has done some things in the past that he's not comfortable with, and he will sometimes go out of his way to try and pay his debt. He has a lot to atone for. But even when he's pulling of death-defying stunts and ridiculous moves, risking his life, the odds are in his favour.

His mother, his adoptive mother, gave him a sense of right and wrong that's closer to the norm than most of the Thieves' Guild. This is why he was able to bring the Thieves and the Assassins together. No one else had done that before. And it probably has something to do with his being an orphan. He grew up in the Thieves' Guild, but he spent some time on the streets as well.

He can be defensive, anyone who's had to fend for them self gets that way. He looks out for himself first, and if he has time, he might look out for other people too. He does that more often than you would think. And it probably has to do with his abilities. It's given him an inflated ego. He can do anything he sets his mind to, so he's never really in any danger. Nothing he can't handle, or thinks that he can handle. He can be quite insufferable.

Between his flair for the dramatic, and that frustratingly strong moral compass, he's become a difficult man to read. He keeps his cards close to his chest, never wanting to show too much. He is a charmer, a smooth operator, who oozes confidence. He's a renowned flirt. And he doesn't appear to show any sign of remorse. It's like he lives a charmed life. But that's just the surface. Inside, he has his demons, just like everybody else. But as far as the outside world is concerned, he's a scoundrel with a heart of gold.

Abilities

ACROBATICS
Incredibly limber and flexible, Gambit is able to perform feats that few acrobats can match. He has perfect balance, and has honed his talents until they became second nature to him. Now he is able to perform death-defying manoeuvres with relative ease. He does not have the same zeal as others, but he isn't that far behind. He can scale buildings, so long as there is some kind of hold for him, or through the use of a grappling hook. He can leap from rooftop to rooftop. In the past, he's crashed through skylights, thrown his playing cards for accuracy in rapid succession, all while being shot at by dozens of marksmen, and managing to avoid each and every shot. Usually, the worst that happens is his trench coat may get nicked. This doesn't mean that he can dodge fire indefinitely or that he will never get shot. But it would probably take a skilled marksman in a concealed position, or some other means of catching him totally unaware, for there to be any chance of killing him. Even at extreme close range, he would stand a chance of evading. He could move left, right, up, down, forward, backwards, or some combination of them. And it wouldn't be surprising if he managed to disarm the shooter while dodging their attack. They don't call him the Rajin Cajun for nothing.

GIFT
Homo Sapiens Superior, colloquially known as mutants, have special powers or attributes that many call gifts. And Gambit is no different. From a technical standpoint, Gambit's gift is called molecular acceleration. What it means is that he can take the potential energy in an object and convert it to kinetic energy. The smaller the object, the easier it is to charge. That's why he likes to use playing cards. They charge quickly, and for all intents and purposes, become grenades. He doesn't know it, but it helps him in other ways too. He is more agile, dextrous, and quicker because of his powers. In essence, he's accelerated himself. He does it to his bo-staff, making its impacts more pronounced. It makes his mind difficult, but not impossible, to be read by telepaths, and it gives him protection against touch based powers.

THROWING

With the exception of his acrobatic feats, the one skill that has meant more on a day-to-day basis for Remy LeBeau has been his throwing accuracy. By the nature of his gift, he has no way to manipulate kinetic energies at this stage of his personal development than by immediate tactile contact. If he wants to charge an inanimate object, he has to hold it in the palm of his hands, or between his fingers. Whatever he charges, explodes. He can delay it, but it will explode. It did not take long for him to learn to discard the, forgive the pun, cards. He can do it with anything, a stapler, a pen, a knife, but his favourite medium is the playing card. He has a deal with a card manufacturer because he goes through so many. And he is an official sponsor, not that they are aware of what he is using them for. He can judge distance, weight, and the angle to throw something for accuracy, even an unfamiliar or unbalanced object. There probably are people out there who are just as good as he is, or even better, but they are few and far between.

Skills

CHARM
Growing up, he was always a silver tongued devil, able to charm the pants off any girl he wanted, to talk himself out of trouble, and get what he wants through sheer force of personality. But there's an added trick to it. He didn't know it at the time, but he has a subliminal psionic talent that he unconsciously channels through his voice. The subject has to be able to hear him, and their mind must be close. He can't do it over Skype for example. And it is only a subtle effect. Powerful minds are often immune. The bigger the falsehood, the harder it is to convince them. Talking his way out of a speeding ticket is far easier than talking his way out of grand theft auto.

DECEPTION
Long ago, Remy LeBeau learned that if you move fast enough, most people won't be able to keep up. Whether he's running for his life or running a story together, he does it equally well. He has a talent for obfuscation. He can convince other people that he is something that he is not, feed false information, or manipulation the facts to say whatever he wanted them to say, rather than what they actually mean. He has just enough lay knowledge to convincing pretend to be whatever he wants to be. All he needs is the right clothing. He's convinced repair shops into giving him motorcycles and cars without signing a thing, gotten into closed formal parties without an invitation, and even through an airport without going through customs. He's particularly proud of the last one. Through it all, he keeps his lies consistent, but he is ever weary that he may get caught. He doesn't crack under pressure. He looks at it as a challenge and he's always ready to move.

EVASION
Diving out of the way, rolling out of the way, leaping out of the way, backing out of the way, no matter how he does it, Gambit makes every effort to get out of the way. He'll knock a weapon out of his attackers hand, he'll put something between him and the attacker, and he'll do whatever it takes to avoid something striking him. He's very much attached to his person and obviously very successful. Most people in his line of work have scars. He doesn't. He's gotten nicked from time to time, but that's only natural. His ability to evade borders on precognition and is tied to the X-factor in his genes. He can be creative and even awe-inspiring in his solutions to such problems.

FIGHTING
Gambit's fighting style is not formalised, but it is effective. He uses a mixture of his mutant powers and his own natural acrobatic ability. Aiding this is his custom-designed retractable quarterstaff, which is composed of Wakandan vibranium. By now, the staff is a natural extension of his body, and he can catch opponents off balance when it suddenly extends to its maximum length. He has broken many a jaw that way. But when he doesn't want to be mean, has had it knocked out of his grip, or just doesn't have it on him for some other reason, he is equally capable with his fists, head, knees, elbows, legs, and feet. He's no stranger to a barroom brawl and knows just how dangerous a broken beer bottle can be when used as a weapon. His only formal training was with the sword. In the St. Roch Thieves Guild, honour duels are still a part of life. He was trained primarily in fencing, but if a katana or battleaxe are available, well, he'll take any blade in an armoury.

GAMBLING
Gambit, unlike how the name may imply, does not gamble. He takes calculated risks. Everything in life is a risk, but when Gambit plays pool, darts, cards, craps, or any casino game, the risk is minimal. He does not like slots or roulette because he only plays games he can use his knowledge, reason, and experience to enhance the odds. He plays to win and he has been doing it since he was a child. From a simple shell game to high stakes poker, Gambit knows every trick in the book to better his chances of success. Card counting is an ugly term, so he doesn't use it, but some games are easier to win at when you know how than others. Would you expect anything less from a man who's chiefly known for throwing playing cards and goes by the name, Gambit?

PARKOUR
To most people, parkour is nothing more than a set of actions. They see it as interchangeable with free running. But to Gambit, who was an early adopter of the art, there is a difference. Parkour is a state of mind. It's not that he wants to scale walls, jump barricades, or leap over cars, it's that he sees that as the easiest path. At its core, parkour is about taking the path of least resistance, not about showing off. If he has to scale a building, leap across rooftops, run over cable lines, and enter through a skylight, so be it. But he doesn't do it for the spectacle; he does it because it's easy.

THIEVERY

Being a Thief, like everything else, requires practice, practice, and more practice. Remy LeBeau has over twenty years experience with all manner of thievery. He is a decent pickpocket, able to use sleight of hand and misdirection to get a small object and secret it within his trench coat, a potted plant, or even on the person of another without their knowledge. He can move silently, and sneak up on people. He can keep to the shadows, move through large air ducts, enter through the underground tunnels, rooftop, and disappear once inside. He can pick locks, be it electronic or mechanical. Most of this requires equipment, which he has or has access to. Sometimes he just uses his mastery of kinetics to blow a lock. He works well alone, or in a group. Thieves don't often get along, but he is professional and can work with whoever is with him. He may not trust them as people or trust their abilities, but he can fake it. He can run an operation, or be the operation. For Gambit, it makes little difference.

Resources

BODY ARMOUR
The costume isn't just a flamboyant fashion statement. It's functional too. He wears body armour that protects him against light projectiles and some stabbing weapons. It could have given him more protection, but he didn't want to sacrifice any of his flexibility. He'd rather dodge it than deflect it.

CONTACTS
You never know when you're going to need friends in low places. Gambit has cultivated a contact list of allies, enemies, and acquaintances that he could go to in a time of need. Each of them has their own motivations, their own agenda, but if you play them right, you can get what you want. And Gambit knows this. Whether it's a place to hang his coat, or a missile launcher, he could swing it almost anywhere in the world if you gave him a few hours.

FORTUNE
Thieves like Gambit do not steal for the money. They steal for the challenge, for the practice, or for the fun of it. A lifetime of being a thief has left Gambit with a sizeable fortune. If he wanted to, he could probably retire to the country and live out the rest of his life in comfort. But instead, he steals the occasional jewel, painting, or technology, and has a lot more fun.

TELESCOPING BO-STAFF
At some point, Gambit came into possession of a retractable staff. When fully extended, it extends to 1.5 metres. When collapsed, it can be hidden in the palm of one's hand. It is light weight, does not appear on metal detectors, and incredibly durable. It's probably made of vibranium or some other special material, but Gambit is no metallurgist. He can charge the staff to deliver an incredible blow, but for some reason the staff is never harmed by this.

THIEVES' GUILD
Remy LeBeau is the prodigal son of the St. Roch Thieves' Guild. He is the adopted son of the Patriarch of the Guild. And the Guild has prophecies, which fit his description, though he is not aware of them. He was trained by the Guild, and is recognised as being elite even amongst the elite. Clients have casually discarded other thieves who charge millions for their services when they learn that he is in town. He has a lot of enemies in thieving world, but he also has friends. Well, friend may not be the word. But he has people he could turn to, for council, money, work, and sometimes all three. He is respected by his thieving enemies, and liked by some of the St. Roch Thieves' Guild, even after the excommunication. He did not leave on the best of terms, but they are still his family. Estranged or not, blood is thicker than water. And even though he was adopted, being a thief is in his blood.

XAVIER'S SCHOOL

As an associate of the X-Men, Gambit is recognised by Xavier's School as a friend and ally. It is a great resource for wayward mutants seeking redemption such as him. They have food, shelter, a state-of-the-art facility, medicine, money, and are the closest things to friends he has ever had since his excommunication from the Thieves' Guild. Whatever he needs, they would be able to provide it. The hard part is getting him to ask for their help.

Weaknesses

BAD HABITS
Drinking, gambling, smoking, and stealing aren't just harmless distractions for Gambit, they're obsessions. They've become as much a part of him as his accent. He's a kleptomaniac who will routinely pilfer things habitually. Like any other skill, he can only maintain it through rigorous practice. When he gambles, or takes calculated risks as he thinks of it, there's always the chance that he could get burnt. And as for the drinking and the smoking, what he's doing to himself can't be good for his internal organs, mutant or not.

EXCOMMUNICATION
There are members of the Thieves' Guild who still love Remy Etienne LeBeau. They may even help him from time to time. But they cannot do it openly. Remy is no longer a member of the Guild. He was banished. He is to be shunned. He brought shame upon his family. And that's what the ones who still like him think. Others will attack him on sight to rid him from this world, and gain some of the honour he cost them. It's not easy being a leper, but he is one.

EYES
Eyes can naturally appear red due to albinism or in flash photography as the light reflects off the retina. But Gambit is not an albino, nor do his eyes match what's called the red-eye effect. His pupils are black, but his irises are red. Without glasses or contacts, he immediately stands out as something different. The rise of cosmetic contact lenses, worn to deliberately change the colour of one's eyes, has softened the reactions he gets, but it hasn't eliminated them. When he has to, he hides his eyes behind a pair of glasses.

HONOURABLE
Even the most corrupt of individuals can have a sense of integrity, believe in justice, and have honour. It may be skewed beyond recognition, but it's there. Gambit is a man of his word. He's selective about his targets. He can be trusted. Sometimes, this gets him into trouble. He's too honourable for his own good. He doesn't believe in killing unless it's absolutely necessary. At other times, his dishonesty makes it hard for people to believe him, even when he's telling the truth and for the greatest of reasons. He may not look it, or act it, or sound it, but he's a decent guy. He's just also a bad guy.

HUBRISTIC
Like everything else, confidence is only a good thing when in moderation. But alas, humility has never been one of Gambit's traits. Instead, he's at the other extreme. He has supreme confidence in his abilities, largely because so far, they've worked. He's the kind of person who's succeeded at just about everything he's tried. It's part of his charm. He's not a berserker, he's no fool, he can be cautious and pessimistic, but for him, there is no difference between believing he can do something and knowing that he can. And that can be dangerous. One of these days, his pride is going to lead him to a fall.

MUTANT MASSACRE
There is no rest for the wicked. And even less for those with a conscience. Gambit played his role, and he bears the scars of that fateful day. Sometimes it nags at him, sending him into a depression. Other times it interrupts his sleep. But it is always with him. He learned a valuable lesson. His actions have consequences. He has much to atone for. But it will never be enough.

MYSTERIOUS
What he was, and what he is, are not the same thing. Gambit has a past that is full of regrets. Some of his failings were not his fault, but enough of them were. One day, that past may catch up with him. It could be the Thieves' Guild, the Assassin's Guild, or someone else from his past. But for now, he doesn't like to talk about it. When he has to, he'll give a sugar coated account, one filled with exaggerations, half-truths, and misdirection. If the people he has come to care about knew who he was, they wouldn't feel the same way about him anymore. And that's the thought that keeps him awake at night.

THIEVERY

Record or not, Gambit is a professional thief. He's a criminal. Some of the people he's stolen from have power and influence, and wouldn't hesitate to take a hit out on him rather than going to the authorities. He doesn't do it as often as he used to, but he's still a thief. He probably always will be. It's just a matter of time before his luck runs out. Every time he steals, he's taking his life into his own hands. One of these days, he's going to get caught, and he may not be willing, or able, to live with the consequences.
