Harry Dresden (Scenesys ID: 174)
"I don't want to live in a world where the strong rule and the weak cower. I'd rather make a place where things are a little quieter. Where trolls stay the hell under their bridges and where elves don't come swooping out to snatch children from their cradles. Where vampires respect the limits, and where the faeries mind their p's and q's. My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. When things get strange, when what goes bump in the night flicks on the lights, when no one else can help you, give me a call. I'm in the book."

Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is a private investigator and the country's only wizard listed in the yellow pages (Constantine has the internet covered, the bastard). Based out of an office in Bludhaven he specializes in Paranormal crimes and finding lost items. Harry finds frequent work consulting for the Bludhaven Police Department's SPECTRE unit. Harry is an extremely powerful wizard when it comes to raw talent but often has problems focusing his magic without using a wand, staff other focus.

Harry Dresden stands at a very tall 6'9" tall, with a lean and lanky build. His dark, almost black hair is usually kept short, but is often unkempt and messy. Depending on the type of day he is having, Harry can either be clean shaven, but most of the time he sports a nice 5 O'clock shadow, leaving him looking scruffy.

His usual attire consists of jeans, t-shirt and a pair of combat boots. A silver pentacle is draped around his neck on a silver chain. A heavy leather duster, complete with a mantle over the shoulders, is worn most days even in the heat of summer.

Harry Dresden was born on Halloween, to Margaret LeFay and Malcolm Dresden. His mother died in childbirth, so Malcolm took care of him while travelling across the country trying to make a career as a stage magician. When Harry was six, Malcolm died of a brain aneurysm. Harry, orphaned, became a ward of the state.

He first manifested his powers at age ten, during a running long jump at school Olympics in the spring. Desperate to win, he magically pushed himself about ten feet farther than he would have jumped on his own. Though he landed badly and sprained his wrist, he won a blue ribbon that he keeps to this day.

A few weeks after first manifesting, he was adopted by Justin DuMorne, a wizard and former Warden of the White Council, who took him as his apprentice.

When Dresden was sixteen, DuMorne tried to enthrall both him and his girlfriend, fellow adoptee Elaine Mallory, succeeding with Elaine, but not with Harry. He faced and beat 'He Who Walks Behind', an Outsider summoned by DuMorne to kill Harry; afterwards, he decided to go back and rescue Elaine. Harry made a bargain with the Leanansidhe in which he received power enough to defeat Justin DuMorne, a debt he would owe his godmother for years to come. Harry faced DuMorne in a duel to the death and won. He stole Bob, the air spirit of knowledge, and left, thinking Elaine died in the fire.

Dresden was then found by the White Council (to his surprise - as far as he knew, there were no other wizards besides himself, DuMorne, and Elaine) and was put on trial for breaking the First Law of Magic. He was let off the death penalty due to the killing being ruled as self defense, and instead was put under the Doom of Damocles. This was due to some of the Council members, notably Ebenezar McCoy. Harry was taken in as apprentice by McCoy; though this would later be found out to be because McCoy was the Council's wet-works man, and was under orders to kill Harry if he showed any signs of rebelliousness -- which happened fairly often, apparently. Harry lived with McCoy on his farm in Hog Hollow, Missouri; his days were spent with hard work on the farm during the day, and studying in the evening. Although McCoy taught him about magic, his teaching of general values and providing a stable and peaceful life and home were even more important, and crucial for shaping his life.

After spending some years "getting his head together" under McCoy's tutelage, Harry attained membership to the Council, though he didn't, and still doesn't, trust them. (This is improving, albeit slowly.) He spent some years travelling across America, much like he did with his father, before settling down in Bludhaven.

After he first came to Bludhaven, he worked at a bunch of different jobs, among them being a dance partner with a senior-citizen organization, where he learned ballroom dancing. He then joined Nicholas Christian at Ragged Angel Investigations, where he spent three years gaining his license as a private investigator. After this, he opened his own business.

Harry is an irredeemable wiseass. He tends to respond to dangerous, uncomfortable, or frustrating situations with a fine-tuned sarcasm, even when he wishes he could keep his mouth shut. However, to those who truly know him, they quickly figure out that at his core Harry genuinely wants to help people. He hates seeing innocents hurt and has frequently put his life in danger for complete strangers. Harry lives according to the belief that magic comes from human life, and that it should be used to protect, not destroy. He also has an old fashion chivalry complex towards women that gets him into trouble. Growing up an orphan has left him with a soft spot towards orphaned and lost children, and a deep hatred of bullies. He will fiercely defend the people who are important to him. He is fascinated by puzzles and loves reading, particularly mysteries. Nothing satisfies him more than coming up with the solution to a challenging problem or mystery.

Harry does have a dark side, however, one that has grown with the tragedies that he has suffered and witnessed in his life. When he loses his temper, he tends to lash out with vast destructive power, and this usually ends in a burned down building. Harry's job requires him to make many tough choices, and there is almost never a clear distinction between good and evil. He is both aware of, and terrified by, his own dark side, which leads him to often question whether he is becoming the very things he fights. When he believes his actions have led others to harm he can sink into a spiral of depression and self-recrimination.

However, for all his darkness and doubt, Harry truly believes that there is good in the world, and that it is worth fighting for. At the end of the day, his friends know they can count on Harry to stand up for what he feels is right.

As one of the most powerful younger wizards of the White Council, Harry has a large repertoire of magical powers. His skills at evocation, or 'quick and dirty' magic, aka "kaboom magic", aka "battle magic", lean toward large blasts of fire and force, sometimes using wind, he also has some skill with earth (usually manipulating gravity) and lightning magic. He has considerable magical brute strength, though his control is somewhat lacking. For this reason, Harry is ofttimes referred to as a magical 'thug'.

Harry is skilled with battle magic. Casting shields, fireballs, columns of force and hurricane gale winds on command. He is able to cast without a focus, but the effects tend to be less controlled and usually end up more powerful than intended. With the focuses he carries with him, his precision and control increases greatly.

Harry is capable of creating blasts of fire from his blasting rod that can be up to two feet in length, and can reach half a block away with enough heat to instantly melt Iron and tougher metals. With enough emotion and will power he can briefly go higher than this.

His shields can be strong enough to be able to handle armor piercing 50. Caliber Anti-Material rounds, Lightning bolts, and intense flame and other elemental, physical, and magical attacks. While his manipulation of earth magics, can move several yards of solid rock, and can concentrate the gravity of several square miles into a narrow area though this takes incredible power and preparation.

Since touching one of the coins of The Blackened Denarius, Harry has started to manifest Hellfire in his spells, this power is not normal fire, but a force of pure destruction and havoc increasing the potency and damage his spells can do when added to his offensive spells. Closely linked to his emotions when feeling anger or rage it can at times leak out in his magical foci causing them to glow a sullen and baleful red color and exude the scent of brimstone.

Using Hellfire doesn't add any additional taxation to his use of magic, but with all magic there is a cost, and with Hellfire it could be his very soul.. AS such Harry tries not to use Hellfire, but sometimes it can't be helped.

For Harry his magic wells up from life itself. As such, with the amount of magic available to his body there are several perks that comes along with this. First off when he is wounded and heals, eventually the scars of that damage will fade away with time. Breaks will heal, and eventually look as if the bone was never broken, nerve damage will right itself, and badly mangled tissue will give way to clean unblemished flesh. This also means that once he hits middle age, the years will stretch out ahead of him giving him a long and healthy lifespan in the triple digits of years. While long lived Harry still is mortal and can get sick and wounded, and killed like any other mundane human being.

The Magic that Harry Dresden wields is that of life itself, it is versatile, and varied. With the right symbology, (Physical, or Mentally Imaged) enough juice, and strong enough will, just about anything can be accomplished. This generally falls into three broad Categories.

  • Thaumaturgy: The magic of making links with other items. Some examples would be Voodoo, where you make a link with another being and through manipulation of a doll cause things to happen to that being.
  • Evocation: This is the forceful movement, and manipulation energy. Lightning Bolts, Fire balls, creating sheets of Ice, and manipulating general energies fall within the scope of this magic.
  • Psychomancy: This is the detection of thoughts, and the manipulations of the mind.

Harry is a blunt instrument, not a scalpel. Only the strongest, most potent emotions can ever be sensed by him, be this off an inanimate object, a body, or a living person. He's just not good at this sort of power lacking the sensitivity to put it to good use.

A Soulgaze occurs when a wizard meets the eyes of someone for more than a few seconds. It gives the other a window into their soul. It doesn't relay specific information (you can't use it to interrogate someone), but it does give one a vague impression on whether they're trustworthy or not, or if they've been psychically harmed, etc. Much like the third eye, what is seen can never be forgotten, and this can only happen once per person. Only creatures with a soul can be soulgazed.

Harry is also skilled in thaumaturgy, or ritual spells. Given enough time there is virtually no limit to what Harry can accomplish. He is skilled enough to do quick and dirty tracking spells on the fly with just some chalk and a strand of hair, or more difficult spells such as summoning and voodoo dolls (thought he tries not to stray into the black).

Harry has the wizard ability to open his third eye. This takes a moment of concentration, but once opened he can see the world as it really is without obfuscation or magic involved. People can be viewed as a manifestation of their being (good/beautiful, evil/ugly, etc.). Building, surroundings and everything else also take on manifestations. Such as a house where death has happened can have skulls around it, or a building that might have had a fire can be shown shrouded in flames. Whatever is seen, can never be forgotten as it will leave a psychic imprint of that particular moment in the mind of the wizard.

Harry is skilled in being able to take items and enchant them this is how his Kinetic rings came to exits, as well as the protective capabilities of his duster.

Harry is a licensed private investigator, having trained with Nick Christian. He knows how to gather clues, and ask the right questions. Magic doesn't tend to hurt with some of his investigation skill as well, such as tracking spells.

There's a lot out in the supernatural world, and Harry knows a lot about it, be it the eating habit of a Phobophage, or just exactly how allergic to iron the Fae are. He doesn't know everything that's out there.. but he knows a good heck of it.

Harry tends to carry around a .357 Magnum revolver in his duster, as well as some extra ammo. This isn't exactly legal, but that doesn't stop him.

Over his life and career Harry Dresden has made several allies that he can call on for help at times.

Bob the Skull: Bob is an intellect of spirit that resides inside an intricately carved human skill. Bob is an invaluable resource as his knowledge of the arcane is vast. He helps Harry with formulae for potions, information on supernatural creatures, information on the laws of magic and how they change over time, etcetera. Bob has been 'alive' for centuries, and all his knowledge is at Harry's beck and call...usually for the price of some trashy romance novels.

Ebenezar McCoy: McCoy is a wizard of the White Council, when Harry was being judged with a sentence that's only outcome is the separation of head from body, he spoke up and took on the responsibility to raise Harry and teach him proper magic. What Harry doesn't know is McCoy is the White Council's wetworks man, the Blackstaff with his own license to kill. Nor does he know the man is his maternal grandfather. A secret the man closely guards.

  • Karrin Murphy: Lieutenant Karrin Murphy of the Bludhaven PD Specter Division is the big boss for her unit, not always having been a friend or ally jumping to the conclusion that Harry had something to do with when bad things started happening. They worked through this and are now staunch allies.
  • Molly Carpenter: He's known the girl since she was in training bras, a good kid that he had to disabuse of her infatuation with him. An up and coming talent that is White Council quality the girl got herself in some trouble a few years ago and to save her he took her on as his apprentice.
  • Michael Carpenter: Knight of the Cross, wielder of the Sword of Love, one of three swords that have the nails of the crucifixion worked into their steel. Harry has known Michael for years along with the rest of his family. His wife for ages disliked the Wizard but started warming up to him after he saved their youngest life. He's a better man than Harry and Harry knows it.
  • Mouse: The Half woolly doggosaurus, half garbage disposal is actually a Foo Dog of incredible power and intelligence. Smarter than some people Harry's met, (potentially smarter than the Wizard too.) Mouse has laid a claim to the wizard, something that has been quite the surprise to others who recognize the mutt for what he truly is.
  • The Alphas: Gotham University has its own pack of werewolves, a handful of kids that were taught how to transform into massive wolf like beings. They're all good kids who invite Harry to their weekly table-top RPG where Harry plays a human barbarian with mighty thew.
  • Thomas Raith: Thomas... Thomas is complicated, the only vampire he's met that didn't come off as a creeper or full of himself. Currently he doesn't know what the vampire wants, but a few times he's been in a bind, and Thomas was there helping him out of said bind. What Harry doesn't know is Thomas is actually Harry Dresden's Half-brother.
  • Waldo Butters: Waldo Butters is a medical examiner in the Bludhaven PD's morgue, a good guy with a great heart and a giant love of polka music, he's become the de facto sawbones when the wound needs to be patched without all the red tape of a hospital. Much to the guy's chagrin.

A rod used for channeling fire spells. Made of wood and carved with intricate runes. When being used, the runes glow red and wisps of wood smoke emit from them. Tends to be lashed to the inside of his duster with a long leather cord.

Not carried very often, Harry owns a can that is able to channel earth-based magic. The cane is Victorian and has a slender thirty-inch steel blade inside.

Harry tends to carry around a lump of chalk in the pocket of his duster, used for creating quick magical circles.

Harry Dresden is a private investigator, licensed to practice globally. This is his main source of income generally being hired to find lost items, and to investigate things of a spookier sort.

You can find him in the yellow pages under 'W' for Wizard.

One of his signature pieces of gear, a long leather coat enchanted to work as armor against various attacks. The enchantments are strong enough to stop a round from a high caliber rifle.

Across the three middle fingers of his right arm are three rings of braided silver, each line of silver enchanted to steal and store a little bit of Kinetic force every time Harry's arm moves. This can be recharged with a little bit of time spent hitting a punching bag as well. Each individual thread of silver can hold enough force to equal twice the punching power of a world heavyweight boxing champion, and can be activated individually, or together allowing one, to all nine strands to release their stored potential.

In Harry's head is the psychic copy of a fallen angel. A cosmic being that was around when reality was born. Her only job is to turn Harry and to get him to pick up the blackened denari that entraps her, allowing her to bond with him and work with (read possess and take over) him to their mutual (read Armageddon) goals.

Currently Harry has very little trust with his hitchhiker but she's along for the ride and at times of immense need has been able to provide an eternity's worth of knowledge, be it how to speak ancient Sumerian, or to read German, or to even have total recall of what he saw in an earlier meeting. Either way Lash is a double edged sword.

A bracelet with tiny medieval shield charms on it. Used for creating force fields. The bracelet is a simple silver construction, the shields copper. With the focus Harry is able to create shields strong enough to stop armor piercing .50 caliber anti-material rounds, lightning bolts, and other powerful blasts of mundane and magical source though the strength of the attack will cause the charms on the bracelet to heat up. It is large enough to cover him and about two feet on either side of his body. He has been able to expand the shield to cover his car once but such efforts will weaken the shield and what it can withstand the further away it expands.

A pendant Harry inherited from his mother. Used as a focus for various spells, most notably to cast a warm ambient light.

A long staff used for channeling magic. Also works well as a bludgeoning weapon. Made from a part of an old oak tree that was struck by lightning.

Harry has an old VW bug, named the Ambush Bug. Once, it was all blue. Now, it sports one green door, one red door, a primer white hood with claw marks. It runs... most the time. Harry keeps supplies he may need in the storage space within the hood.

Harry has a large chivalrous streak that gets him into trouble a lot. He can't help himself if he perceives a damsel in distress situation.

Bound into 30 pieces of roman silver, The Knights of The Blackened Denarius are fallen angels, the worst of the host that rebelled against God. Cast out of heaven and bound into the coins. By themselves the Denarians cannot do anything but when picked up by a mortal the Fallen angel inside is able to whisper to the holder of the coin, and leave a psychic echo of themselves, convincing the holder to become host to the Denarian. This gives the host access to thousands of years of knowledge and wisdom, and can allow the host to take on a monstrous form shaped by the Denarian it plays host to.

Harry also has a guilt complex, and can get very depressed if he feels he has hurt innocents or failed to protect people.

While Harry has a lot of power and skills available to him, at the end of the day he is fundamentally a human being, and is subject to every human frailty.

To this extent, she can give Harry realistic hallucinations, cold water will feel warm, she can make him think he's on fire, or hear/not hear what she wants him to miss. Thankfully she doesn't pull this shit very often, but she's always a whisper in the back of his head a temptation of power. He ignores her, but apparently his ID is a lot more receptive to her talking in his subconscious.

Currently Lashiel's coin is buried in a lead box in Harry's basement, her touch might be detected on him and it's something he's got to keep secret having what amounts to a demonic stowaway could get him catching a whole lot of death.

His magic is subject to the nature of the environment he is in, so he has to keep in mind the laws of physics, and while he can bend them he cannot break them entirely.

Using magic drains him, and like any muscle if he pushes it too hard he can hurt himself.

Harry has difficulty with more delicate magic, causing him to rely on complex rituals and magical tools to handle spells that require finesse.

Rogues Gallery

  • Arthur Langtry: The eldest, and one of the most powerful members of the White Council, Arthur is entitled as The Merlin. A politico and one that loathes the existence of Harry Dresden, Arthur would love nothing more than Harry to get himself into some trouble that he can't get out of.
  • Donald Morgan: Another member of the White Council, for years Donald was Harry's personal bane, a warden of the White Council he was Harry's parole officer and The Merlin's right hand rabid dog. Donald is a petty, burnt out law enforcement officer who things Harry is nothing but a dark wizard in hiding who doesn't deserve to live.
  • The Leanansidhe: Harry's honest to god Fairy Godmother. When Harry needed help in killing Justin Dumorne, She gave him the power, at a price. Something that Harry has spent a good bit of his adult life squelching on.
  • Others: Harry's rogues gallery is much larger, these are just the highlights, but he's managed in the few years he's been an adult to piss off just about everyone once or twice.

Harry can be impulsive and stubborn when he wants to be, and is a bit thickheaded about people at times.

Harry causes most modern technology to eventually short out, and the more complex the tech the more likely it is to fail spectacularly.

The White Council as they like to call themselves are a sect of magic users that would like to think they 'run barter town' governing themselves, and others like them that use their unique brand of magic.

He tends to mouth off at inopportune times. Even when he knows it is a bad idea, and likely to cause him pain and suffering, he chooses to throw caution to the wind and let his tongue loose.
